Early vid - Autism Representation that isn't Crap? - Carl the Collector (ad-free)

I got very passionate about this show and how quickly it was forgotten. I put a patron shout-out at the end and read some fortunes for this one 🙂 Thanks very much for your kind support this month.

Regarding your comment about Daria, I’m not really sure I fully agree with your assessment of the character. I would go into further detail, but a user on Reddit by the tag of Precarious314159 summed it up pretty well. As they exclaimed, “At the start of the series, they portray everyone in her life as being the way Daria sees them, as vapid, stupid, shallow, or clueless. Overtime, they show how her judgements of people were wrong, that the people in her life have depth. Jake went from being the stressed and clueless father to showing all of his attempts at conversations with her over the years was because his own dad was distant and belittled him so he wanted to show Daria he respected her choices even when he had no idea how to connect with her. That's a part of growing up, believing you're in the right, thinking you have it all figured just to learn that you're a complete idiot and you're impacting others. From the girl at the Camp reunion, to the frequent times Tom chastised her for her getting upset at nothing, to even Jane growing tired of their cynical mindset. Like, sure, she wasn't perfect but that's the point of the series, to get us (the teen demographic) to see we can be wrong and think things through from other peoples perspectives.”

Very good points. And I definitely get where you're coming from. I've got a bit of negative feedback regarding my dislike of Daria and it's perhaps a character I should talk more about in-depth to better explain my feelings. I grew up with her in the 90's and I've watched every episode. Honestly I understand particularly from episodes like "boxing Daria" that she is struggling and that she's not always painted as right. Though I would say alot of characters are dramaticaly stereotyped in order to make her "right." Though I agree there's absolutely intellectual merit and self-reflection in Daria just like there is in a show like Bojack. But I think at the end of the day, I just didn't like Daria even after seeing everything about her. I think they humanised her more than any other character, but I still didn't like how the character expressed their insecurity and I found her apathy utterly exhausting. I was a much bigger fan of Jane, who had similar inner turmoil and expressed it differently. Though I absolutely get why many people can relate and enjoy her. Particularly in teenhood 🙂

Hopped on the patreon As an autistic growing up there was like no representation at all And yeah the fact the main representation we have is Sheldon is the worst

When you mentioned that Thomas and Friends haven’t introduced an autistic character until 2022. There is another character who has been around since 1956 and many fans Headcanon him as autistic. That character would be Duck.

Thanks for a detailed review on this show. BTW, I should mention this show has 40 episodes (78 eleven minute episodes plus a Halloween special) as part of Season 1 and are still airing these episodes. Though I am surprised you didn't mention Lotta who is also on the spectrum (see Whole Lotta Lotta, which does mention this), and Paolo who uses an AAC device (A New Friend).

Oh my bad. Are you sure there's that many episodes? IMDB says there's 27 episodes as does wikipedia

This was a pretty good rant honestly. It reminded me of some Ted Talks since it felt sincere and honest.

We've still got a long way to go for proper representation. But, hey, at least we got fandom...minus the toxic parts

I heard that Community had an autistic character in there show and they were able to say it on the show. That is one of the rare occasions that a live action show is able to have great representation of autism.

Abed was a great representation. I would've liked the actor to be Autistic but Abed remains an excellent representation.
