What did happen to intermissions? I would think theaters would use them to sell more soda, candy, and popcorn? A local theater called the Gem used to show a short cartoon then a concession ad before each movie.
I don't actually think movies are longer now in general, there were plenty of overlong films in the 90s(Meet Joe Black anyone? only reason that crapfest was three goddamn hours long is because everyone speaks really slowly for no real reason).
