A.I. Video has been deleted
So.. every now and then I try something different on my channel. And usually, at least some people complain about it and unsubscribe. Yet, at the same time, experimentation is the only way for me to find out what works and what doesn't and grow as a channel.
Well, the A.I. video received more backlash and record number of dislikes.
The cruel irony is, I thought it was going to be one of my best videos. I spent almost 2 weeks working on that video and had been planning it for over a year. I put it off until I was doing YouTube full-time so that I would have time to make it.
One big misconception that I realized was abounding was that I was trying to insinuate a big government conspiracy. And that isn't really at all what I was saying, but looking at the video now I can see how people would think that. In actuality, I was thinking more along the lines of some random guy like me creating it in his basement and just deciding not to tell anyone about it, knowing the consequences.
Also, a lot of people seemed to misunderstand exactly what sort of A.I. I was talking about. And since I was not referring to things like self-driving cars, and instead about a sentient, self-aware being, like is often portrayed in fiction, I used those exact fictional characters as examples, since I felt they were the end-goal of what I was talking about.
And to rub salt in the wound, I got a copyright infringement notice this morning from CBS due to the 30-second clip I used from Star Trek. I could have possibly appealed this decision and in all likelihood I would have won. (it was fair use) However, I was already so disappointed in the reception of the video that I just decided it would be best to delete it.
I've never received a copyright infringement for using a movie clip before, although I always knew it was possible. My plan was that if it ever happened, I'd simply re-work the video to remove or reduce the use of said clip and then re-upload. However, in this case, I think the whole video itself needs some re-working.
So, I've just pulled the video down. And I'm going to shelve it for the time being. However, when my spirits are back up, I'm going to go back to it and re-work it some to make it less of a "master conspiracy theory" that people are getting from it and fix some of the other wordings and things that people complained about. So maybe 6 to 12 months from now it will be re-uploaded and you'll see a lot of the same footage, but a lot of changes.
This was a learning experience. And I'm a bit frustrated since I just lost almost 2 weeks of work, plus I seem to have disenfranchised a lot of my viewers. So for the near future I'm going to be concentrating on more traditional content instead. So stay tuned.

I love this video. Please, don't let anyone dissuade your wonderful curiosity & creativity.
There is no way to be forward thinking, to grow, and to realize your potential without someone, maybe a LOT of someones, getting "offended". The video is top notch, and I see nothing wrong with it from a factual or scientific standpoint. Perhaps youtube is just not the right medium for such content. Clearly Youtube viewers are far too ignorant to be able to understand your ideas, and to properly interpret them. Philistines is what those people are called. Best of Luck!
Honestly to me. It was a great video with good articulate content. As all your videos are. Good work. To bad people had a negative reaction. These things happen though. Whoop Whoop TD4L
Hi, I have an academic background in AI, though I haven't been actively involved in the field for almost a decade. However, a few thoughts on your thoughts: - Imaging a dead brain is unlikely to give the whole picture. In addition to just how the brain is "wired up" (the connections between neurons), there's also a large impact from the different "neurotransmitters" in the brain, levels of which change over time, and can increase some brain activity, or suppress it. - There is academic interest in making more generalized simulations of the human brain, or at least segments of it, because it can provide you something to help test out theories of how the brain works, without slicing up a real person. - There's two main tracks in AI, from what I recall; one is focused more on simulating things down at the per-neuron level: "Parallel Distributed Processing" (PDP), and one is more about using computer language to simulate higher level brain "subsystems", working in a more "symbolic" way to solve problems. The goal of both of these approaches is to try to make a system that, on a given problem solving task, behaves in the same way as human subjects. - The "simulation" approach you described is what programmers would commonly call a "genetic algorithm"; I'm not too sure if that approach is quite used for AI. For AI, multiple examples of input are typically provided, along with what the expected output is. Eventually, the system is meant to "figure out" what's important in the inputs, the rules, etc. However, sometimes that can have interesting results: <a href="http://www.iflscience.com/technology/artificial-intelligence-dreams/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.iflscience.com/technology/artificial-intelligence-dreams/</a> -- feed a program a ton of cat / dog pictures, and it "sees" dogs everywhere. Designing a system that fully simulates ALL of the inputs a real human gets throughout their life would be quite difficult. Most people's brains learn to "tune out" a lot of the noise and visual stimulus going on in their daily lives, but those things are still feeding into the "system" of your mind, and subtly influencing things. Things like the food you eat, getting sick, loads of different tactile senstations... all of these would have to be simulated fully, to truly create a human-like intelligence.
The video was interesting if you look it as a science fiction argument. in that order, you were clever enough to keep your arguments in the science fiction field mostly all the time: Star Trek, Isaac Asimov, Terminator, and in that way your argument was interesting, no doubt of that. Even your main argument is clear, refutable, but clear: "I speculate that artificial intelligence has already been created and is probably been hidden from the general public". However, I agree with Meni Rosenfeld. Building Artificial Intelligence is actually extremely difficult (and is funny because you figure it out in the course of the video). Emulate the brain is impossible with the current technology (remember, the technology evolution depends on the materials, the capacity of using the materials and the purpose of transforming those materials. By instance, the Iron, well know for centuries but only useful for technology since the Industrial Revolution) and the present human collective knowledge (or science if you will). I regret that you must delete the video, could be an interesting debate about a really funny topic. Anyway, remember, speculate is not a sin. Good look with your channel. Interesting work with those LCDs by the way. Best regards from Mexico :D
Hi David. I think your channel is great. I love vintage technology and I enjoy watching your videos. But. It seems from this video that you know very little about AI. And when you post a video about something you know very little about, the result is that you are saying wrong and misleading things which do a disservice to your viewership. As a publisher of informational videos, your viewers trust you to provide them with correct information, and you have a responsibility not to betray that trust. You're a smart guy, and for a smart guy speculating about something he knows very little about, you did pretty well - many of your suggestions are close to the mark. But that, frankly, is not very interesting. It's much more interesting to see you accurately explaining things you are actually an expert of. (And to see AI experts explain AI.) So my suggestion to you - drop the whole thing and stick to what you're great at. Give us the good stuff about classic computing and all that. I feel your pain of having wasted two weeks, but think of it instead as having gained two weeks of wisdom. Own up to your mistake, learn from it, and move on. If you are fascinated by AI and can't let it drop, I suggest actually studying the topic and making a new video from scratch, this time when you're better informed. Rephrasing a sentence or two in the current video isn't going to cut it. To clarify what was wrong in the video: Your most egregious error, as many others have noted, is that you have grossly understimated the difficulty of building an AGI (artificial general intelligence), by several orders of magnitude. There are tens of thousands of bright researchers and engineers all over the world working on the many different aspects of the problem - they have worked on it for decades, they are working on it now, they will work on it in the foreseeable future, and even with their combined effort they are not likely to solve the problem within the next few decades. Diminishing this problem to something that can be solved by one guy in his basement is not only misguided and misleading, but also disrespectful and offensive. Even things you've said which are more-or-less correct - e.g., directions you suggest which actually have been discussed by researchers (but of course, are not as easy as you make them out to be) - demonstrate your lack of knowledge. It's a kind of "Here's what I came up with, I don't care if actual researchers are working on similar things, or what they have to say about them". Another issue is that your discussion of the motivations of an AI is very naive. It's true that there needs to be some source of motivation, but your assumption that it needs to be something even remotely resembling human emotions is wrong (in general, the most common mistake people make about AI is not realizing just how different it would be from human intelligence). The standard approach is equipping it with a "goal function", an optimization target which all actions of the AI are aimed to maximize. It can be pretty much anything, with the typical extreme example (demonstrating how different it can be from humans) being a "paperclip maximizer", an agent that cares about nothing other than maximizing the number of paperclips in the universe. Crafting a goal function which in any way resembles human values is hard, which leads to the danger of non-friendly artificial general superintelligence destroying humanity in an attempt to maximize its hardcoded goal function, whatever it is, while being indifferent to the things that humans value. A good place to start reading about this may be MIRI, which focuses on ensuring that when superintelligence arrives, it is friendly - <a href="https://intelligence.org/." rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://intelligence.org/.</a>
This comment describes the negative reaction perfectly. I hope David actually read and understood this comment, because his post about why he thinks he had to take it down (besides the CBS thing) is ignoring the biggest problem.
It would be nice if you re-uploaded the original video but made it unlisted, just for Patreons I think. I never even got chance to see it before it was taken down!
Well, I won't do it because CBS will monetize it again. And I don't want all of my hard work going into their coffers. But if you want to see it, there is somebody else who has uploaded it to their own channel, if you search for it.
Screw 'em. I liked the video. If people don't like it or agree with it then they don't have to watch it. Make the content you wish to make and don't let others sway you.
Please keep up the good work and don't let it set you back. Take it in stride, as a learning experience, and press forward. I really enjoy your videos - they are excellent! - and I look forward to more!
I've been watching your videos for the last few months and I thought the AI video was good. I was really surprised about the backlash because I didn't think it sounded like you were pushing any conspiracy theories. You made a simple comment that there may be AI out there that the general public doesn't know about. Why do people think that is so far-fetched? The government has historically had access to technology that the public didn't know about for years or even decades. I told my husband about it and he didn't understand the controversy either. We are both programmers, we dont work with AI, but we have a general understanding of the subject. My husband has worked with chatbots, if that counts. He agrees with what you said in the video. Anyway, I don't have much free money to do patreon, but I did turn off adblock for your channel and re-watched many of the old videos with it off, after seeing this backlash. Keep doing what youre doing. Looking forward to the new AI video upload.
thank you.
David, I have been binging on your videos - I've fallen in love with your channels! I really loved the extra production value of this video and all the obvious work you put into it. To be honest, I thought it was an April Fools video due to the timing. Your claims of government cover up and how easy it would be for you to create an A.I. (sorry, I felt both of those claims /must/ have been tongue-in-cheek) had me grinning the whole time. I was confused when it began to feel like you were literally serious, but hey, GREAT video, and please do more elaborate ones like this whenever you can!
Well, like i said in the post above. I never mentioned a government cover up, and never intended it to sound that way. That seems to be inferred by the people who watched it. Thus, one of the reasons I need to make some changes to the wording before I re-upload.
There /is/ the possibility someone will find some super simple way (in retrospect) to create AI or such. It is /very very/ unlikely however. And if it happened, I'm not sure they could exactly keep it hidden. Once you have a sentient AI, superintelligence is only a skip away. And having some form of superintelligence around will be noticeable, if unprepared even if a bad way. The book "Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies" by Nick Bostrom is an interesting one in this context.
I signed up to Patreon especially to comment on this. Please, please find a way to get round the copyright issue and put the video back up. I enjoyed it and liked your tin foiling. So what if loads of people didn't agree. So what if you even missed the mark on anything. This is your channel and you should not compromise on you content. You make whatever video you want. Your real fans will stick with you whatever. People that unsubscribed because of it don't deserve to get to watch you content. They can go and hate on someone else. Videos like this are clensing your following of people that aren't worth your time! No one should be held to a standard that says everyone should like and want to watch every video and agree with all your opinions. I mean that is impossible anyway. And those in opposition who get most worked up are going to be most vocal but they don't speak for all your following. They may not even speak for the majority or even a significant chunk of your following. I don't even care if they actually know better than you on the topic. Screw them. I don't want them dictating to you what you do. Also, my view is that negative publicity like this will end up as good publicity and hopefully attract more people to you and bring out people in vocal support of you. Whatever anyone else says, I think you are fantastic.
Keep in mind that since this is my full-time job now, my fans are sort of my boss. So I do have to make an attempt to please everyone... obviously I'll never succeed in pleasing everyone, but I can at least shoot for a specific goal of like/dislike ratio. However, before I can re-upload this video I need to at least re-word some of the sections that were leading people to believe I was saying something different than I was intending. If people are coming away with a different meaning than I planned, then I didn't do my job at communicating. And so I need to fix these things.
I liked your video.
I think the main issue with your video is that your audience consists of people who loves technical descriptions, and the AI video was just conjecture without any real world examples. I think all that was needed to salvage the video was some acknowledgement that the things you described exist (genetic algorithms, spiking neural networks, computers specifically designed to simulate neurons, emotions in AI being tested), and how they can be combined to create a sentient AI.
I didn't see the video, but good grief; I guess even the typically older audience of your stuff can be ridiculously petty keyboard warriors. FWIW, I'm signing up for your Patreon today because I dig what you're doing.
Sorry but my gripe was not just conspiracy, simply that we just don't have the processing power or capability just yet
also want to say that i became a patreon. should have earlier, but this stupidity made me have to jump onto the bandwagon. Make some more 8 Bit Keys videos, Im jonesing for more!!!!
Just wanted to let the 8 bit guy know: the video wasnt a waste of time and it was very informative and easy to grasp. I even "Liked" the re-upload of it! Just want to say: keep making videos, and that maybe these "one off" videos should be patreon-only so the douches dont take this as a crazy conspiracy theory video
while i personally think you (and several other programmers i know) couldn't be more wrong on your assessment and understanding of AI and its likelihood of ever existing at all, i can also say that i still enjoyed watching the video even if i completely disagree with much of what you had to say in it. too many of the loudest people on the internet these days just seemingly lack the intellect to have a nuanced opinion or to be able to derive enjoyment from watching such topics as this explored, even if they may disagree with you as i do. at any rate, i love all of your content, whether i agree with your assessments of things like AI or not. i hope you don't take the rantings of a bunch of whiners on the internet who can't handle an opposing viewpoint to their own too personally. keep up the great work, man!
Sorry to read you felt the need to actually remove the video. I know I disliked it, but I didn't hate it.
Yeah man, I get where you're coming from but YouTube is all about you creating what you want. I don't really see any problem with it and I applaud you for going after something you find interesting and being honest about your experience. I'm still a fan of your videos, and I'll still share them with others, keep up your good work!
The problem is not that you insinuated government conspiracy. The problem is not that you tried something new. The problem is that you have no idea what you're talking about. We can't emulate the brain because we don't know how it works. We can't simulate millions of years of evolution in a day. These ideas are from the 50's and they don't work. "There are people way more intelligent in this then I am and if i can figure this stuff out on my own, then it goes without saying that other people that are smarter then me would also be able to figure it out" Great thought. Have you never thought about the cure for cancer or aids? According to the quote above. They also exists. And time machines. What else? Everything ever thought! Planning it for over a year and 2 weeks work? If you took your time to read about AI or even watched a single popular science documentary about AI you would realize that your ideas are not even worth mentioning. However I really like your other videos when you know what you're talking about.
Sorry, but unless you can divulge your credentials as to what lab you're currently working on the latest in AI development, then 'you have no idea what you're talking about' either. He wasn't stating that we should or could re-create evolution's product: our brains. Artificial Intelligence does not equal recreating every neuron in the human brain. It does not even have to use the same process that we do to process information, it simply has to arrive at similar conclusions, ideas, and abstracts. Then the question becomes... when it is able to do all that, will emotions and 'consciousness' become a reality or a question to at least consider? We already 'emulate' the brain - that doesn't mean we have a 'brain emulator' like a Virtual Machine yet, but look at all of the different items we have today that use AI software. Hell, years ago the stupid Aibo dog was a token of AI used for research and got to the point of being creepy with abstract learning and attachment. So - in the end, who are you to decide who gets to work on what technology? While some people work on robotics and the software to run them, why don't you be the one to work on medicine? Later
I enjoyed the video. I didn't mind that the theme was different than your normal content.
Sorry to hear the video got so misconstrued. I though it was a great video and your right experimenting is the only way to find new and exciting avenues to try. I'll be sticking around for the long haul and I look forward to your new stuff!! Thanks for all your amazing work!
I think was a good video, but the fact that you say that in your opinion strong ai is possible... maybe that wasn't the right thing to say( there a lot of AI expert that whatch your channel). But you are not alone, search for AI winter (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI_winter)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI_winter)</a> a lot of people like you thought it would be easy to create a strong AI in the 70 '. Of course this didn't happend and this generate a disinterest in the field that has last until some years ago
It was in my opinion one of your best videos and my teacher for my business tech course wanted to use it please re-upload it!
I hope you re-uploaded it...I did not get a chance to watch it :D Don't mind the haters!! Keep doing what you do!!!
Please re-upload the video.
Sorry to hear it got such a bad reaction, people are weird! I enjoyed it, and it really got me thinking about the ways of developing artificial intelligence in a way I'd never thought to look at it before. I hope all the comments on here go some way to balance out the negativity on Youtube, but I know for me that one bad comments outweighs about 100 good ones. Thanks for everything you do.
Damn, I hadn't gotten around to watching it yet.
Hello there ! You're video was a little "crazy" but it I really like the "SciFi" side of it. I like SciFi and never think about AI like you did. I mean with AI acting like a human,... and I liked this. I just watched you're video once (unfortunately) but for me it didn't like a video related to conspirancy at all. So don't worry too much, you're really a nice person and we really like to watch what every you want to show us. Thx.
Oh modern day Internet how I loathe you. Just because you don't agree with someone it doesn't mean you have to dislike the discussion, does it? I do not believe the same as you on this topic but it was still very interesting to hear your thoughts about it! Keep up the good work!
Failure is path to growth. I actually liked the video. I also had a lot of thoughts and opinions about it. Two of them I want to share: 1) was the fact that AI already exists important for the video? I think not. The video would even have been better without it. 2) You focus on the brain where intelligence is concentrated. I believe the whole body is needed: the nervous system, muscles, and other parts are really necessary for a human to react as a human. IMHO the body contains a lot of "memories".
I think you made the right decision. Keep those spirits up as high as you can, because I (and I'm sure a lot of others) absolutely love(!) your channel and enjoy watching the videos. Also, don't let this withhold you from doing something new in the future. Risk, among others, is an ingredient for success.
Hi David! Please don't get discouraged! Maybe you could do a separate channel for stuff like this? Like LGR gas LGR Eats. That way only people interested will subscribe and watch and those uninterested don't need to register. Maybe you could call it "8-bit Ponderings" or something. Anyway, you have fans in Japan who love your work!
The video was absolutely superb, so don't feel bad about that. I think it is perfectly fine to branch out in to other topics. However, in this case you may consider a new channel like you did for your Air-gun channel, etc. In this case, you can consider a channel devoted to Technology and Society or Technology Commentary / Editorial or Current Topics in Technology where you could raise awareness for the status of technology as it relates to society today. Another topic that could go on the new channel would be "The Technological Singularity, what does it mean for Humanity." Dave you have had a lot of negative comments before on your regular old-tech videos and it never stopped you, so please don't be discouraged. We love all your work and the way you make complex ideas more simple without dumbing it down too much for your techy followers. Thanks and keep up the good work!
it's absurd to unsubscribe to a channel only for a single (arguably) bad video. I hope people will rejoin. While i prefer your regular theme, i still enjoyed the video. I think you greatly underestimated the difficulty of creating an AI
In that case I was just too late to see it :-) Your content is great and I doubt any of your patrons would unsubscribe just because they disagreed/misunderstood one video. Having said that, I've been there, pouring weeks sometimes months of work into something and being convinced it was my best piece of code or idea yet for it to be completely shot down. The other way around also happens though (who would have thought that a push notification doorbell would catch on) but we tend to easily forget those instances. I'm looking forward to the re-release of the video and any other video you create!
Although I thought that believing that AI had already been secretly invented was a bit of a stretch, I still really liked the video and it's a shame it was a disappointment. I have a blog where I post about PC games, chip tunes and European comic books, and I have also tried the inexplicable fiasco of a blog post I thought would make all the difference. For example, I wrote a long post about the European comic series Spirou and Fantasio because I needed it as a foundation for another post after it. The second post took strips from one of the Spirou novels from 1959 about something that works exactly like the gravity gun in Half-Life 2 and compared them. I was sure this was such an amazing find that the blog post could go viral and all. But then when I launched it, it was the exact opposite. Tumbleweeds. Thinking about it, it might have been because both media were sort of out of time, thus I had lost the window of opportunity (the novel was from 1959 and Half-Life 2 was from 2004). Or maybe it's just not as interesting as I thought it would be.
Ah that's unfortunate. Although I know I debated a bit, it was a really entertaining video, and I appreciate the new ideas. I can definitely see science fiction as an offshoot of retrocomputing, and really hope you'll venture into similar territory in the future. Either way, you've got a fan in me.
I too would like to see the video - I was busy with taxes so I decided to not watch it quite yet. I regret that. Perhaps you could post it as Patreon "supporter only" content (with the 30 seconds of Star Trek edited out if need be). Now that it's so controversial, I REALLY want to see it! :)
Don't beat yourself up over it. The only people who have never failed are those that don't push themselves. I think part of the reaction is the video went outside the realm of expertise and into conjecture. It's an interesting topic for sure but it would probably benefit from interviewing someone with formal education or work experience. AI isn't really a field for us dilettantes.
Hey dude, sorry for the backlash against your video. For what it's worth, I found the video entertaining, and the tone / production reminded me of some old PBS show that was targeted for kids and adults. I think the shift into more science/philosophical topics was a sort of tonal dissonance from your usual and that was bound to get a backlash from some. Don't get too disheartened! The internet isn't always kind, but you have a fan in me and even at 'your worst' you still make amazing content. Thanks for entertaining us with your hobbies and knowledge and know you'll have a fan and supporter in me for a long time to come!
Sorry you had to take it down - indeed, it was a little bit heavy on the conspiracy stuff, but in general, I was positively surprised by the depth you went in to. Encouraging you to make a reworked, maybe less 'political' version, and maybe post it on a side channel if you're worried about reception by subscribers in general?
I don't think that you were the problem but rather people not understanding your point. I liked the video because I knew what you were talking about :)
Didn't worry me at all, I was not interested so I didn't watch. People really need to chill out :D
I personally liked the video. Dont let them keep you down.
I applaud you trying new things. I'm happy to fund both your successes and your failures. The AI video wasn't to my taste, but I'm glad to see you taking risks. I mostly wasn't into it because it was information I'd heard from so many sources already. Whereas when you pull apart a synth or a computer, you're unlocking mysteries of my youth. Don't let it get you down. In tons of other occupations, we pray for experiences where we only burn a quaint little crumb that is 2 short weeks. I've burnt months and years of my professional life on software that ended up doing nothing for no one. But the people who sign my checks told me to do it, and so it goes.
I really enjoyed your A.I. video. I thought it was really thought provoking and even forwarded it to my brother and dad. Commander Data is my favorite Star Trek character and I was happy to see him featured in this video. I hope to see this video back eventually.
That's disappointing; I had this video in my Watch Later queue. I don't think you should let negative comments cause you to self-censor. Maybe let it guide your future work, but it's sad that you felt the need to delete your own work. Hope we'll see it back in some form (I'd love to see it even if the only changes are removing the copyright claim section and maybe an opening card explaining the controversy).
Sorry to hear that the video didn't work out. But don't stop trying new things! And as others mentioned, you made some good points on ethics related to AI, and the David in the laptop was pretty funny.
I actually enjoyed the video as a means to bring up the hypothetical concept of AI rights. Do I necessarily agree with everything you theorized? No, but it brings up some interesting points, and I look forward to seeing it revamped and uploaded again.
Maybe people can be more polite next time. We have become a world of complainers, erroneously emboldened by a thumbs up/down button and the constant solicitation of our opinions.
Really? One video was such a problem? I don't get it. It's not that big of a deal. You have plenty of other great videos up there. Oh well . . . Can't even remember this one. Maybe I didn't watch it.
Aw, I didn't get to see it :(
Why is it so hard for folks to simply skip a video if they don't like it? ¬.¬
I agree with many of the other posters and while I applaud you taking some risk and trying something new, I felt the video was very odd. I hope I can make some practical suggestions for ways to improve it, rather than just express dislike. You already discussed how it came off as conspiratorial and the tone was off, so I won't touch that. But more importantly, it actually didn't explain much of how AI worked. You could have gone into detail about the various methods you discussed, their history and used examples that would be easy to understand. Instead, you used metaphors without your usual rigor. I'd love to see you make a video series about various AI techniques, using your gift of simple explanations and illustrations that back up the concepts. That would be worth watching, even for someone with a computer science background such as myself.
Im sorry, man. I only made it half way through the video before my family interrupted. I was hoping to finish it. I liked that it was a diversion from your norm. Oh well, I'll look forward to Version 2.0 when it comes.
It's your channel, and while you are working for subscribers/views, you should be allowed to post what you want. I think you should stand by your videos, failures or successes, because they're about stuff you like and stuff you made. Personally, I suggest reposting (after dealing with the dumb copyright claim). YouTube people will insult, they almost always do, but it's still your work and your thoughts and you should post it if you are proud of it (and you should be). I wasn't a big fan of the AI video. I thought you oversimplified the complexity, but had a nice idea about trying to program emotions to lead to the actual AI. It felt like you were saying "I could invent cold fusion if I just gave myself 20 years. All you need to do is.. invent cold fusion". But that's just my opinion, and it's your video and your ideas. I disagree with it, I move on and look forward to the next video. That's what the majority of your fanbase will do. Whether you repost this or not, don't be afraid to take on side topics like this in your channel. Do what interests you, or you'll end up hating it. You're living the dream (some people's, hopefully your's)! It won't be a dream if you don't enjoy it. On a lighter note, how do you know all the downvotes and negative comments weren't from AI trying to keep you from hiding their secret ;) By taking it down you let them win!
I hope you do rework it and get it re-upload, it really was a good concept for a video. It surprises me that we have to start thinking about things like AI rights and ways to control them, it all seems so futuristic and fictional, but as a software developer I'm seeing a lot of development in AI from quite a few big industry players. It's only a matter of time before we need to start thinking about this stuff! I liked the way you got Clint and some other YouTubers in for their opinions on the matter too. Perhaps it was a little conspiracy theorist baity, but hopefully this experience doesn't stop you from innovating a little from time to time. At the end of the day I think your regular content is of high enough caliber that you should be able to recover relatively quickly from any losses incurred by the odd failed experiment :) Keep up the awesome work!
Hey man!, I did enjoy this video, I felt it was refreshing and an interesting new topic. Hopefully this doesn't discourage you into trying new stuff. Also, maybe it can be posted here just for patrons?, it would be cool to still have access to it.
Well you can put in the "like" camp, I think it's nice to get another view on different subjects. It is a shame that the YouTube comment section is so incredibly acidic. It's one of the reasons I find it hard to really put time in making videos, but at the same time I never want a creator to be poisoned by the comment section. It's like taking a swim at a toxic waste dump and hoping you don't come out with another arm, or eye.
I liked the video, you had some interesting theories there, I believe that you should edit it a little maybe, but it will be sad to know it will be gone forever, it's interesthing how people can overreact, but at the end you are not here ONLY for the people, but because you like what you do, which is different that most youtubers do, if was there just to satisky people and easy hits, then you can't lose with unboxing or "let's play" videos, but that's not your thing.
Oh man I was really excited to watch that video! The topic fascinates me and I believe AI does already exist and that maybe we just don't recognize it in its current form. I wish I could have seen your video and seen your perspective. I had already added it to my watch list but haven't had time to watch it yet! Dang! Hang in there. Rework it a bit, maybe post it to your Patreon followers only for a test run, we're here for you!
I thought it was an interesting video and very much a personal opinion. After watching it I was going to leave a comment saying how I thought AI wasn't really possible because the thing it lacks is a soul, but I didn't worry about posting it because I felt it might attract ridicule, just as it appears the video has in itself. Oh well. The joys of speaking your mind :-)
I liked the video. I look forward to seeing the revised version whenever you get around to re-releasing it. IMO, most of those YouTube commenters need to chill out. It's not possible to please everyone all of the time.
I was one of the people that didn't like the AI video. I work in the field, so I may have been overly critical. I really like most of your other videos, so I never considered unsubscribing or dropping patreon support. I think it's a good idea to explore wider topics. Please don't let this discourage you.
Chin up - one "bad" video doesn't undo any of your awesomeness! I hope it doesn't dissuade you from trying different things.
I'm sorry to see all the negative feedback you received on the AI video. Machine learning and artificial intelligence (especially in the area of neural networks) is something I'm very interested in and have been studying over the past couple years. You were definitely on the right track in a lot of areas in your video, and i think you did a very good job taking some of the more complex areas of study in the field and trying to explain them in lay-man's terms.
Thank you for all of the comments.. I have read all of them, even though I haven't had time to respond to all of them yet!
I think it's a great video, and yes is true that it looks not very well researched, It's just a theory and I think is valid. Keep publishing great videos!!, this things just happens.
Totally sidetracking here now, but I just misread your name as Alain Trottier... And now I want to play Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis! 😜
I thought it was a well made video with interesting contents. Keep on experimenting and don't let things like this discourage you.
I thought it was a great video and didn't mind how it was different from your other content. I understand you have to do what's best for your channel also. I look forward to your revised upload. Keep up the great work and ignore the haters on YouTube :-) I know that is easier said than done.
Argh!I didn't get to see it. Maybe you should leave it unlisted just for your Patreons. I think most of us understand every video isn't going to be for everyone. I for one am glad to see you experimenting and will keep supporting you.
I really enjoyed your video, I knew it was your personal opinion but I really enjoyed watching it. I didn't for once think it was a bad video and thought it was one of your better ones. I know you cannot please everyone. I am glad I got to see it before it was taken offline because I very much enjoyed it! I am sorry to hear that it was taken so negatively.
I had commented earlier on your AI video and we had a brief exchange, so I believe you know of the problems I saw with the content... but I'm sorry you felt you had to delete it. One possible option would be to double down on AI :-) In other words, explore narrow AI implementations in the context of your channel, i.e. gaming and music. AI applications are being used to generate music and Game AI implementations are numerous and varied. You do very good explanatory videos. If you're able to research some of these algorithms/methods properly, many viewers might benefit from a clear explanation of these Machine Learning algorithms applied to music and gaming. So, net-net, perhaps a more down to earth, non-AGI focused video in the future, tying back to the core focus areas for your channel?
I actually quite liked the video and thought it brought some interesting points. But i understand, hope it does better next time!
I admit I wasn't a fan of it, but it's going to take a lot more than one video to make me withdraw support. I fully expect you will make videos that aren't my cup of tea from time to time, and other supporters should expect this as well. Withdrawing over one single video is just ridiculous.
FWIW, I really loved the video, despite a few parts that weren't quite as clear as to your intent. I would not give up on this type of thing, but just refine your approach.
It certainly wasn't my favorite video of yours, but I was happy to see you exploring new areas as a creator. Not every video is going to be a home run, but keep trying new things, don't let people discourage you. I, as well as many others, will support you no matter what. Enjoy your day
Seriously bummed. I loved the video and I was impressed at the fascinating theories it boldly submitted for consideration. I already shared it with a friend who will now be unable to watch it. In fact, I had planned to share and discuss it with lots of people. I hope you'll be able to repost it without too much rework and I'll have that chance again.
I am so sorry to hear about your negative experience. I am myself (very modestly) knowledgeable in A.I. from undergrad university background, and I must say there were some quite problematic ideas in the video, and I am afriad it was first video on your channel that I could not bear to watch to the end. :/ I will however NOT be withdrawing my support, I still think 99% of the content you create is freaking awesome and any new video is almost guaranteed to be one of the highlights of my week. I regularly share your videos to my friends and I am very proud to be a supporter. I think it takes courage to admit mistakes. Maybe work on some of the points your clarified above and re-upload the video later, but don't let this get you down! And I am NOT against experiments, it was a refreshing new concept, just maybe some of the ideas were not well thought-through.
dammit! didn't even get to watch it. (I've been moving cross country for the last week.) also fuck the haters. seriously. unless you post some sort of racist, evil shit or whatever, the hell with those people. I really hope these douchebags don't scare you off from trying new things. please reconsider. thanks!
I didnt get a chance to see it, but I trust you had good intentions as you do with all of your videos. Keep up the great work... I really enjoy your content! Don't let this get you down.
Keep working at it. I think the conspiracy thing did it in. This one had me rolling my eyes as well. There's a lot of philosophy and big concepts behind AI that aren't really solved yet and I think if you delved into those concepts then you'd recognize the unique problems that AI brings us.
That's such a shame. I shared the video with some friends of mine together with a recommendation (that's the first time I've done that with your content). I thought it was your best work and demonstrates how you're growing as a channel. Please re-upload it in the future and keep experimenting.
Don't be too hard on yourself about the AI video, it was overall a very interesting video, but there were some details that some people (me included) stuck on. The detail that really rustle my jimmies* is that you were talking about a sentient AI and not just a deep neural network like IBM's Watson. In your next version of the video, I'd appreciate if you'd specify that you're talking about the former. Keep up the good videos! :) * catchphrase meme that conveys feelings of discontent or discomfort when someone doesn't use the right word for a specific situation
I'm surprised a video like that got such backlash. I mean it's not like you discussed politics or anything. While it was off-topic for the channel, I did think it was some good food-for-thought. Chances are I wouldn't have even known about such reactions had I not seen this follow-up post of yours.
Sorry to hear about the negative feedback. I did manage to watch it and I must admit I was rather surprised by how far off your usual content it was. However, that is not a criticism and hope you try more stuff again. One of the problems I think you had with that is, that there is no perceived middle ground between someone saying something unproven but not entirely insane and lizardmen running the government. To many it is all the same thing. I think your reasoning on how a true AI might be achieved is fair and balanced, though I do suspect that we don't have quite the physical computing power to achieve that yet and perhaps an expansion on those points would work better. Disregarding the idea the government is hiding AI away and going on to the idea of a guy in a basement hiding an AI away because he knows the consequences does seem to me, personally, unlikely. 1) The idea the average consumer has enough resources to run such a thing is highly improbable, especially if the computing resources are not available at all,. 2) Even if 1 is false and someone HAS created such an AI, then I fail to believe that they would keep it quiet, even if they only told one person, who told another person, etc. We are not very good at keeping secrets :) Hope you are doing well and not too discouraged!
I actually really enjoyed the AI video. Unlike some other viewers, I didn't over analyze everything covered. That being said, I did like how you made comparisons between real life and fantasy. The references to Data and The Borg were nice as well. It's a shame that you ended up having to delete it, but at least I got to enjoy that video before it was taken down.
Sadly I do understand the backlash, both from the perspective ofpeople who have no understanding of AI as well as experts in the field. But I enjoyed the video. I thought it was interesting and thought provoking. It's a shame people can get so easily triggered.
If somebody unsubscribes because they disliked one video, then they were not your people anyways. I found the video a little odd myself, but why not? As you say: Experiment! Hope you get your spirits up quickly, because we in this forum always look forward to the next content you put out!
One thing worth noting is that controversy isn't necessarily a bad thing- starting arguments amongst people is a great way of growing your viewership, especially when it's from the heart and not just for controversy's sake
I am really sorry to hear about all of the backlash you got - I enjoyed the video especially because it was something different. I enjoyed your other "off topic" videos as it pertains to electric vehicles because I have enjoyed your perspective on so many other topics. It's a shame that there was so much negativity out there, but please count me, and a number of other folks on here as supportive and would be happy to see you repost it sooner rather than later.
I didn't dare venture into the comments on that video.. I suspected it would be a real hornet's nest. Plus I don't have enough knowledge about the topic anyway. I blissfully just live my life and bet my money on I die long before any actual "Skynet" Doomsday happening. ;) But it was rather cruel to see how quickly people out there turn on you. However, the people who unsubscribe over one video like this... well, should you really care at all? That's not the followers you want anyway if they're that sensitive. Like you said on other negative comments: If some videos don't appeal to you, you simply don't watch them. Let alone judge a channel with your record on just one video that might have gone a little astray from the regular direction. I'd say: put your chin up. you win some, you lose some. And you've certainly won everything so far. Lesson learned, now you know what to do different. I think the core group is still behind you anyway. :)
Count me as another patron that enjoyed your video. I'm sure I'll like the revision once you post it, whenever you're ready.
That's rough. The concept of sentient AI is rather tricky. I could see it broken down into 4 parts, where each section is focused on a different aspect. History of AI in media (which I think you did a great job on in the video); the difference of sentient AI vs regular AI; ethical ramifications of sentient AI, possible execution of sentient AI on a technical level. Keep up the work.
I liked video, I can see the misunderstanding people had on it, but don't actually think it was a big thing, anyway keep up with the great work!
I enjoyed the video too. Sorry that you had to take it down :-(
Don't be disheartened. Not every idea will work, and whilst I did think the video was a little bit fanciful, it was still entertaining, and certainly had no negative effect on my option of you and your channel. There will always be a set of people just waiting to be offended,
Don't be discouraged! While I didn't agree with the premise of your video, I was certainly entertained by it, and I would never even consider unsubscribing or withdrawing my support for your content simply because I disagree with you. I love your channel, and I'm sure you'll find many many people saying the same kinds of things. Keep it up!
Sorry to hear about that. While I didn't necessarily agree with all your conclusions, I found the video entertaining and a neat twist. I think it's an over simplification. However are you aware that synaptic processors exist? They work more similarly to a neural network such as the brain. Unlike CPUs which process instructions one at a time, or FPGAs which replicate discrete logic and other basic circuits, these synaptic chips work by associating different functions and forming cross links within the chip. This starts to get closer to how the brain works and makes true AI a more real possibility.
Sorry you had a rough go of it...unfortunately I've been falling behind on YouTube videos and missed it...darn it...sounds like I probably would have liked it. Hope you consider uploading it again sometime.
I loved the video and understand everything you said, your point of view and all. I hope you continue doing those kinds of episodes because they are so inspiring, like every other "normal" 8-bit Guy video is. Keep up the awesome work.
Well you didn't annoy me with the video .... But I also didn't get around to watching that one yet ;)
I enjoyed it, and you should be able to post what you like!
I can't believe I missed it! I wish I would have seen it in time. Keep up the good work, and don't worry about the haters. I think I can safely say that everyone here fully support you (more than just financially).
Ah the vocal idiots of the internet. Don't let them get you down! I very much enjoyed the video and it was great good for thought. And don't forget, dislikes are a good thing for you, it all counts as viewer interaction! My 2 cents is that I think you should re-upload without the footage, and possibly a little disclaimer at the end saying what you've put here. After that, if anyone still dislikes it it's on them. It's a discussion that needs to be had so good on you for getting involved! As always, keep up the good work.
For what it's worth, I really liked the AI video. I'm sure you'll keep coming up with cool ideas.
