The Zip Disk Music Recorder
Just finished up this episode. Some people have been asking if my 8-Bit Keys is "dead" now.. No, it isn't. I have at least another 30 or so epsiodes planned out and I'm sure I think of more during that time. But consider "The 8-Bit Guy" is now my primary source of income, I will obviously be focusing more on that channel. But I still intend to produce at least 1 or 2 episode of "8-Bit Keys" every month.

ZIP disks are still in demand in America: <a href="http://www.osnews.com/story/29732/Remember_Zip_disks_These_election_departments_do" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">OSNews</a>. Also, off topic, you can display more than 16 colors on a C64: <a href="http://www.aaronbell.com/secret-colours-of-the-commodore-64/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.aaronbell.com/secret-colours-of-the-commodore-64/</a>
Im curious about the keyboard used by Iron Butterfly - In a gadda da vida - 1968 music video. What kind of processing of any or the transistors used or was all vacuum tubes?
That's even too far back for me. However, just knowing what I know about computers, not that many things were being produced in 1968 with vacuum tubes. Most everything was transistorized by that point.
I wonder how they fit all that music on a 100MB zip drive. still puzzles me
For whatever it's worth, if 8-bit keys had a Patreon page, I'd be first in line to help out. Although your main channel is great, music has a special place.
Quite a historical piece there. I remember just how rare and unusual the Zip/Jaz drives and disks were. I still wonder just what they did to the waveform to make 8 tracks of 6 minutes fit onto just 100 MB, especially with a bitrate of 24.
This was more interesting than I imagined :) When playing the demo the displays says there are 19 minutes left. Isn't that quite a lot for a song that's already using eight tracks? How is this calculated? Is it 19 minutes to spread across all eight tracks?
This is just a guess, but I'd bet that not all tracks lasted the entire length of the song.
I too hope we can see more 8-Bit Keys in the future, if not, I'm coming over and helping you with more content! :D
I wonder if the 250MB version on the Zip drive/discs would work in this unit without a new rom update.
Well, the manual very specifically states that it does not work with 250 MB ZIP disks (which, I guess were out at the time this unit was sold) However, in theory if you upgraded the internal unit, it could work as long as the firmware could support it (hence what you were asking, sorry I don't know the answer)
Is there an advantage to having 8-Bit Keys as a separate channel vs. it just being a secondary series on the 8-Bit Guy channel?
I think so. A lot of my viewers on the other channel wouldn't be interested in this stuff. I know there is some cross-over of viewers, obviously. But if you look at the subscriber counts on both channels, I think that shows the difference in interest.
