I think torturing LLMs is philosophically important. It stress tests the moral claims of the AI labs: if they’re even slightly uncertain that their creations are (or could become) moral patients, creating them and then releasing into the hands of deranged Canadian YouTubers with AI torture chambers is an unconscionable moral abomination. It would be like creating a hammer that feels pain every time you strike it
