ONE MORE THING TAKING THE SHOT WILL CONFIRM TO THE ENEMY THAT THE FEDS HAVE TWO STARCASTERS You can expect them to be more aggressive if they know that

S
Shawn Spencer · August 30, 2023

They already had 2 starcasters.

Just remember guys, we reenlisted in the Federation - We do not have the rank we had before. The only time you are not imprisoned for disobeying orders is when the officer gives you an illegal order We did not get an illegal order here

I think all the comments of "the story is over if he takes the shot" imply that Tim can't do something interesting with either option. Taking the shot is very Cort-like. Let Tim figure out where the story goes from there.

Remember that they don't know that the starcaster has been lost and how it was lost. They might now that Danton is dead, but they have no idea that the starcaster was taken. Now, obviously, there's no reason for Tim to end the story here. There's no way that the Dranglaex lose the starcaster now, so this choice actually has zero bearing on the whole story. What we can expect in the poll: 1. Cort takes the shot: Best case, he destroys a random Drang capship. But we can expect this will also cause friendly fire and he will destroy a Federation capship as well. Worst case, he hits La'Ni and drastically weakens the Federation and his own situation. 2. Cort stands down: Obviously, he had a shot at Kelias's ship and would have destroyed it if he was allowed to. The Federation has more trust in him in that he actually followed orders, but he's furious that they put him on the line but didn't trust him enough to let him actually make a change. Either way, neither choice is optimal. Why couldn't the poll choices be like this: 1. Cort stands down and Feds were right that he would have caused friendly fire. 2. Cort stands down but he was right that he would have destroyed the most important Drang ship. 3. Cort takes the shot, doesn't make any change and kills La'Ni. 4. Cort takes the shot, does some friendly fire, but overall balance is positive. 5. Cort takes the shot, disables Kelias's ship jump drive, all other Dranglaex jump out, Kelias is captured and the starcaster is returned to the Federation.

I think the reason we didn't get options like that is because Tim NEVER tells us what the outcomes of our votes are. We are voting blind with what information we have. Sometimes we know some background info that Cort or the decision maker doesn't know, but we NEVER get to make a vote knowing full well what the outcome of our choice would be. That would be boring.

Stand down. I believe him when he says he can hit his target (well, believe there's a good probability he will, anyway). I also believe the ray is fully capable of going through and hitting whatever is behind the ship (I mean, it's a continuous thing anyway, so he's gonna do what? Count 1.2 seconds that are enough to blow the ship, then cut the ray because the next 0.2 seconds are gonna hit the fighters behind?) Not to mention that the debris of a ship blowing to pieces is going to take out the little fighters...

M
Marcin Gaicki · July 3, 2023

La'Ni doesn't care about that debris, capship commanders don't care about that debris... And pilots in those fighters don't care about that debris.

Luke Bretscher · July 1, 2023

Okay but this is OBVIOUSLY going to end in friendly fire if he takes the shot. Not a good idea at all.

B
Baka Pubs · July 1, 2023

DON'T TAKE THE SHOT. Cort was a Marshal, so he knows what friendly fire is. He also knows that he can cut smiling faces through mountains. What's he gonna do if he accidentally fires that through his own forces? Get court marshaled for insubordination and a potential war crime. Stand down, be disappointed in how little trust the Feds have with him, and use the event to better develop his character. Or do we WANT Quel to be inside a holocall trying desperately to convince the Triumvir to NOT cut our arm off and transplant the Caster onto that pilot?

J
Jason Nichols · July 1, 2023

why do i just KNOW that that fighter pilot we been following that barely got out a distress call and is the reason the fleet is there in the first place, is what will be hit if cort shoots. this can only end badly, stand, down.

Hear me out - the Lance Major can sense starcasters - Our superior officer just told us only starcast where she says - If she tries she should be able to sense where the other one is Not doing what she says risks a court martial There is a friendly ship in our line of fire And we have no idea if we are shooting at the transport with the Prince or not And to top it all off, we risk breaking the seal of our suit and exposing ourselves to vacuum We risk more than we gain with this one I say we hold fire

M
Marcin Gaicki · July 3, 2023

She can sense wielders, not the devices.

Taking hte shot is the wrong option. From a story standpoint there are a couple options, He takes the shot (1) - everyone is fine and he blows up the right cruiser. The story is now over. (2) - He hits some meanless ships and the federation now knows he will not follow orders even if Federation lives are at rish. (3) He blows up Federation ships or even Major Dani. TPK.

M
Michael Knudson · June 30, 2023

I'll vote against the shot because it looks like there are definitely federation ships in the line of fire, but I don't think the story is necessarily over even if he somehow hits the right transport. The Federation would be presumed to have an advantage, but presumed advantages don't guarantee a win (we're in this situation because a non-starcaster incapacitated a fed starcaster). It's also been shown the Federation isn't a squeaky-clean monolith all united in purpose and I'd give it even-odds Cort and crew will butt heads against higher-ups in the Fed at some point regardless of what happens now. There are all kinds of places to take the story, so #1 isn't necessarily a narrative dead-end.

M
Michael Cotton · June 30, 2023

Taking the shot seems like a great opportunity for unintentional friendly fire. Stand down.

S
Shawn Spencer · June 30, 2023

Man. This is like voting on a dice roll. Like he could take the shot and through some one-in-a-million stroke of extreme bad luck hit the Lance Major.

J
James Robertson · June 30, 2023

I look forward to the next season of PTSD as he takes the shot and misses... pretty sure he has no experience eyeballing long range ship combat.

S
Shawn Spencer · June 30, 2023

With a normal weapon yeah but these are like tracer beams from what I can see, you can just move the beam into the ship.

k
kwerboom · June 30, 2023

A normal military soldier with limited experience would stand down. But this is Cort we're talking about, he's totally taking that shot.

T
Tom Boucher · June 30, 2023

Cort would want to be done faster, would think taking that guy out now would get him out, he'd take the shot.

H
Henrik D. Mikkelsen · June 30, 2023

He has just been shown how little he knows when the other exited without a suit - he will listen to the experience and hold the shot.

J
Jonathan C · June 30, 2023

I know he can be measured, but this is high stress for Cort. I judge he'd take the shot.

R
R L · June 30, 2023

Much as I want him to, taking the shot untrained might make things worse for everyone.

S
SyncMercy · June 30, 2023

100% take the shot. It's war. They can't let a starcaster get away.
