Unspoken "Or else" does make sense. But I still think this is the right call.
Starting to regret this already
Yeah I really thought just agreeing to join without so much as a negotiation felt soooo out of character lol. We'll see how this turns out I guess. I figure the end game of this and the other option were going to be quite similar. This way just feels... weird. Just gotta trust in Tim's writing ability haha.
I was hoping for freelance or turn evil.
I was actually worried how this would play out, if we readers had done something that might need some... handling. But then I see Cort say, "Okay, just listen-" and I realize that we're still right in character with Cort. He will ALWAYS do what you don't expect, and then need to come up with a fast explanation.
While I understand she doesn't like the federation at this point, I would think that the very idea that they're currently the only thing standing between the Dranglaex and all life being wiped out from the universe, would be enough for her to consider any means necessary to stop that. And, nothing really changes that much unless the Federation is actually stupid enough to make him a low-ranking officer, which the Triumvirate of War doesn't strike me as being obscenely stupid. The other wearers certainly have free agency to do what they need to do within reason, treating Cort any differently would be a grave tactical mistake.
I think whatever reservations she has are about to be postponed due to the impending ambush, which might give her an opportunity to change her mind.
