I know a lot of people are going to be anti-federation for this, but consider if this were in the modern day, and someone got their hands on a nuclear weapon. It doesn't matter how you got it, or why you got it, the government is going to only negotiate so far before they go heavy-handed. It's also a crisis situation they were not expecting. Are they doing the right thing? Really depends on how you look at it. It's obviously not morally the right thing, but is it the right thing when you consider the entire fate of the Federation and hundreds of species in an existential fight for survival? That's the thing we need to think about before we vote for burning the federation down.
Well he was in the process of signing, now the federation just wants to dump his friends and he isnt happy with it. What happens if they interrupt and free him in time. Guess the federation will have a rogue starcaster on thier hands. Would have been far easier to just let quell handle it and let them stay on the ship.

This is hardly a betrayal. Cort decided to forego signing the documents officially enlisting him, and they are now doing what they would not have, had he just signed and gone to the briefing. If anything, Cort betrayed them by renegging on his word. Should have signed the enlistment papers.

Probably not die. Nyrah said a knife could not sever his arm fast enough to prevent regeneration, but whatever laser surgery beam they have will likely be fast enough. If no "stay of amputation" order comes, Cort's just gonna be short an arm, and up a robotic appendage. And mad, probably.

Losing his arm is something Cort very specifically said he didn't want.
