[Research] into Future RPG!

Hello friends!

I hope you are having a wonderful day

Today I come with some news.

First

The free demo for Yaradiel’s crown is up on Steam!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/5096740/Yaradiels_crown/

It took almost a month to get all the stuff approved, and man, I almost lost my hair with all the anxiety.

So, if you can, go and wishlist the game, as with all the internet stuff nowadays, it helps the algorithm recommend the game more!

With that out of the way, today I come with another poll, but before asking questions, I want to explain some stuff.

Those that follow us for some time may have heard of “Deviance”, a mythical game that has been in development and has been cancelled at the same time!

The true story is that I started that project three years ago after some issues with Unity and I planned to move to Unreal engine 5. Quick story short, I was backstabbed and betrayed by not one, but two programmers. I hated every moment of working in unreal 5, and after unity got  his shit together again, I decided to cancel the unreal project and start it again in unity.

However, due to time constraints, that game was never gonna arrive to patreon in time, and I did not feel it was okay to ask people for money without anything to give in return. So I just cancelled Deviance for the time being and started with Yaradiel’s crown, which was going to be a much smaller (in scope) project than Deviance. Yet here we are two years later, and man, the project got big!

Around a year and ago I started working on prototypes and what I've been calling R&D (research and development). I made a prototype, then keep doing small bits from time to time, and for some time now, I been wanting to do a test build. This was going to be originally what I wanted a small group of you to test. But life decided I wouldn’t get enough time to work on this and now it isn’t ready.

Sorry for the long story, here comes the important part. I started playing more, and testing more, and I’m feeling like the game has become too soulslike. And that’s something good because I love soulslikes but I think I went too far for an adult game, and I feel like the gameplay became not only more complex, but also requiring more attention, and is also impossible to play one handed.

With the results of the previous poll, I got a bit concerned, and started thinking of ways I could make it better. At the end of the day I want Deviance to be the best (possible) adult RPG. I foresee that I will struggle with this for a few more weeks before taking a final decision.

An alternative surged, which was to change the core combat to a target-based combat. Think of World of warcraft, or Rift, but of course, single player. I don't know if it is due to the melancholy of Wow forever affecting me, but I have been having a lot of fun with the more “chill” gameplay, and I figured this could be a good element for Deviance. While the mmo-style could also step more into 3 player party (with npcs) and playing in specific roles for dungeons (tank, dps, support) which is not possible in the soulslike style. (granted in the soulslike style you will be able to travel with one companion)

The main tradeoff I see would be the loss of “immersion” because of all the UI elements in the screen, and using “abilities” for everything. The main win I see would be a more chill experience and that it can be played one-handed. In this case most of the complexity would come from you making your build and customizing your stuff, rather than from the moment-to-moment gameplay.

So here is the question: What (standing) gameplay would you prefer to play?

  • Animation based gameplay (Aka Soulslike), with all the complexity and enemies being very punishing when hitting or using abilities on you.

  • Animation based gameplay, but with a bit less complexity and enemies being not so punishing (so you can fumble or face-tank more hits)

  • Animation based gameplay, but super simplified, think something like Skyrim/Fable 1 with 3-4 actions/abilities to use at most, and less builds complexity.

  • Target based gameplay (Aka mmo-style), with complexity, and enemies being punishing when you don’t interrupt or avoid abilities

  • Target based gameplay, but with an evade roll (mixing stuff, yay, sounds fun in theory) and enemies slightly more aggressive

  • Target based gameplay, but not so punishing

These are the options.

Just vote on whatever you would prefer. You can vote one, two, or even all five options if you think you will enjoy all of them.

The sex gameplay will be more similar to Solas city heroes for the Soulslike version, and to Yaradiel’s crown in the Mmo-style version.

And no, as much as I would like, just making test prototypes for all options is not possible.

Sorry for the long post.

I’m not making this game just for me, but for all of us, so I’m really interested in what you guys and gals think and desire, and while I always have the last word (because I’m the one putting 2000 hours on it), knowing what the people want really helps me steer the ship in the right direction.

So please take a minute and vote, this is super important, hopefully, Deviance will be the best game of its type!

This month’s update will arrive on Friday 16th. It is taking me forever because I’m having to input SO MUCH DIALOGUE, and that takes me a lot of time. The saddest part is that most of this dialogue won’t be immediately accessible to you guys, but it is required to be in the game so when I add loyalty quests things don’t just fall apart.

Have a great day!

Cheers!

What I really like about this kind of game is stumbling upon explicit NPC scenes, hidden BDSM spots, A device you can interact with or sexual traps while I'm exploring and wandering around, I find that it makes the world feel more alive.

I voted for Punishing Action Combat and Punishing Tab Targeting. Mainly for the simple reason that if a H game is so easy I have to intentionally lose like in SCH it's become boring for me very quickly. --- About the concerns about requiring two hands: I believe that's mostly irrelevant as long as the H part can be played one-handed. --- About (build) complexity: Less is more. Having a few meaningful options is better than having 20 that hardly matter. E.g. having only 2-handed hammer (slow, staggering attacks and high single target damage), sword+shield (additional defense options) and staff (range and AoE) is better than 10 different weapons with slightly different values. PoE's Keystones are also a good reference point, as they often completely change how certain mechanics function. Having just like 4-5 per class and being able to choose only 2, or 2-3 per weapon and only being able to choose 1 is better than having 30 talents that do something boring such as +5% damage.

Personally, too many adult games go the route of "I am X game, but with SEX!" as a selling point, where the sex gameplay is either a cutscene, or "you've been defeated, here's a sex scene as 'Punishment'". My favorite adult games, of which I would say Yaradriel's Crown is one of, utilize sex in one of two different ways. The first is as a gameplay mechanic, intertwining the "action" with the action. For example, Yaradriel's crown, which I feel pulls off that philosophy near perfectly, where sex is as much a part of the combat as attacks and spells and you can build your character entirely for it, or ignore it entirely and build for traditional combat if you so choose. The second way in which I prefer an adult game should utilize sex is where the game provides so much customization and sandboxy elements to the sex scenes, and multiple different scenarios of how to end up in them, for example, Skyrim with adult mods, where you can end up in sex after being defeated, or have sex to advance certain quests, or have sex to gain money, or have sex after charming an npc just because you're in the mood at the time, and even sometimes pairing that with a REASON, or NEED to initiate sex, either by lust/arousal penalties, or addictions, etc. All of that to say, I feel strongly that the sexual gameplay aspect should be the most important part of an adult game, and though Solas City Heroes had sexual gameplay, I feel it was largely a result of that rather bland philosophy of defeat=sex and sex=defeat. I can recall one time when playing it that a boss regenerated hp too quickly for me to defeat it, and so I defeated it through sex. Otherwise, I would largely just fill up the escape bar as soon as possible and get back to the beat em up, as it is the least detrimental way to play, as sex only really served as a regen tool for your hp, and then you should get back up and fight. Largely because the only way to lose your permanent hp bar was by having sex and climaxing, whereas your regular hp bar could always be regenerated even when depleted. I feel that returning to that style of sex gameplay for a souls-like game would be a HUGE step back, as I feel Yaradriel's Crown really innovated on a pretty stagnant style of sex gameplay games. That's not to say that I dislike Solas City Heroes, but after Yaradriel's Crown, it's hard to go back, and I believe that no matter the type of gameplay for your next game, the sex gameplay should continue to be a large part of it rather than just a defeat mechanic, otherwise it's largely a matter of losing on purpose in order to "enjoy" that part of the game. I am tired of playing an adult game and having to intentionally lose in order to even experience the adult aspects of the game.

Ehh, partybased is not MMO, but cRPG. Then i think to games like Neverwinter Nights, Planescape: Torment, Drakensang: The Dark Eye, Dragon Age: Origins and the first Mass Effect. MMO is where you play with several people on a server and compete to each other and also work together. Then i think to mmorpg's such as Black Desert Online, Aion or to ones such as The Secret World. I play BDO and Aion Classic myself and have played the secret world and also TERA,. As said earlier a real mmo ain't gonna work, but if i read the post then it's more mechanics. But as you describe it, then it's not a MMO at all, because the key core of a MMO is that you play with dozens of people online. MMO = Massive Multiplayer Online. If it's going to be like YC, which is also a bit partybased, then it's good. I like YC alot and i'm also a fan of partybased rpg's. I have played many hours in Neverwinter Nights 2 (and still not finished it). Actually, YC does remind me a bit to Divinity: Original Sin, where you play with 2 characters.

Anything 3d and real time (not turn based) is good by me. Maybe have a couple difficulty levels for how badly you're punished for missing strong attacks / reactions?

I've cast my vote, and I'll also toss my two cents : please, do not rely on polls to decide. - We are too few to be representative - you will get plenty of people advocating for their personnal fetishes to be featured (especially if said fetishes are rarely featured anywhere) - No one agrees on what is the best RPG nor on what is the best bondage game - It will take years to complete and perhaps the fashionable game when yours come out will be something we don't even know about now - You will be working on it for months and months, so make it something you are enthusiastic about and believe in - If you are enthusiastic about your project, chances are that many others will be too, even if they don't even know you right now As for my personal humble opinion : - I don't play bondage games for their combat mechanisms. If there is ever the tag "soulslike" on your game, it won't even appear on my Steam's feed - some bondage games can be very hard to master without any combat (like maneuvering a gorgeous naked bondaged lady in zero-g to escape some kinky robots) - there's no point in reinventing Skyrim+Mods - there are already tons of NSFW Unreal Engine 5 "RPG's" on Steam - a good bondage game should focus on bondage first (gorgeous bodies, good and believable bondage), and then story/lore, combat being very down the priority list - please, do consider some infiltration quests/scenes/gameplay. Infiltration goes very well with capture since it facilitates tension building - I got all of your games and I love the fact that you allow us to play with male or female, and exclude one or the other from the NSFW scenes. I hope you'll keep that feature - In your games, you give the possibility to the person who is on bottom to win the fight anyway. I hope you'll keep that feature - I loved Dungeon Coup and the possibility in Kinky Fight club to have both fighters start off the fight in complete bondage. So, please, do something that you are enthusiastic about, do not fear to loose a few people : you'll gain some others. Just please, be consistent in the general mood and theme of your game, do not try to do a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I trust you to do well in your next endeavor.

So here are my 50 Cent... It seems some people (like me) just want to have a good time with the bondage and sex theme and chill. Others seem to think it should be a damn punishing experience. I will be honest. If anything is going to be more complex and/or difficult than in YC i am out. This is the maximum i'm personally willing to go. I have no joy in investing too much thought into these kind of games, nore do i wish to have a massive challenge. There are other games that are designed for this kind of fun. But I think kinky games should stay what they are: kinky games. Not the next Dark Souls. I might not hit the spot for a bunch of people here, but just see it as it is. A personal opinion with no intend to offend anyone.

Mazedweller · October 11, 2026

I am disappointed by the lack of deep engaging gameplay in erotic games, and everyone wanting medium to chill experience which to me defeats the purpose of playing a video game when it's basically just a glorified porn scene viewer. Ideally, a game like this - whether it's Soulslike or MMO-style, would have different difficulty options, easier for those wanting to browse Pornhub in a video game, and hard for those who want to play a good video game first, with the erotic part adding even more enjoyment on top. My only problem with Yaradiel's Crown so far has been that it's way too easy even on max difficulty, so it gets boring fast.

Agreement with That Guy. Night of Revenge sold gold bricks(I think that dude made over a million dollars just from a game?!) because souls like is so big and... well imagine if every enemy in dark souls could... well. Anyways. But if this is a project near and dear to you then do what you wish with it. Miyazaki and Hideo didn't get where they are today by being told what to do. Take that as you will. Though I still sit here wondering when we'll get something other than humanoids like monsters.

Dennis Petersen · October 11, 2026

I voted the one of those I found most interesting. Will admit not any of those are the ones I'm looking for, but like "That Guy" said. Do not pick alone what people vote on, listen to the votes, but make what you have a passion for. People will feel in a game if it's made with passion or if it's something that feels forced to be made. That being said, I would probably buy it anyway, considering what a great job you did on Yaradiels crown, i just hope Yaradiels crown will still be worked on as well. Myself, Yaradiels crown is everything i have been looking for. I am a big fan of turn-based combat, where I can sit back and slowly decide what to do. I love that i can turn off the need to dodge or block in Yaradiels crown and make it a full turn-based gameplay.

Eh, it's the opposite for me, I love UE and C++ much more. I personally like either style of combat, but for *ero fighting* I'd rather keep it simple controls.

Not making a TL:DR for this so apologies for the text wall. Not sure what the etiquette here is for referencing other devs games so my apologies just in case but take a look at what happened with Snow x Hime, love the devs but they tried making a Sekiro Combat Style Boss Rush HGame with too much attempted complexity and it flopped almost immediately which prompted the Devs to rebuild the entire game from scratch damn near (which they did, credit where credit is due and it's much better for it imho), at the end of the day folks gotta remember what type of games these are, they're Adult Games and too much complexity is not a good fit for them. Especially if someone is aiming for "soulslike" ( I too am tired of devs of ANY type of game trying to design combat like the Soulsborne games), their combat sucks once you dive into it and it's mostly due to shitty enemy designs with deliberately unfair and obtuse choices and stamina systems which ruin everything in every form and I have well over 5 Digits in time played across All NIOH Games and Wo Long and well over a few thousands hours across all of Fromsofts normal Soulsborn games (not Night Reign) so I am not some mindless drone hater. Honestly Wo Long's combat loop might be a better fit for an Adult Game since it's really not that complex while still being punishing if you fuck up as the player but is incredibly satisfying once you learn it. With Action Combat systems you've gotta start looking at Hitboxes, animations, animation cancels(ALL Devs really need to re-educate themselves on what the heck Animation Cancelling is, it helps combat feel and flow IMMENSELY), hurtboxes, Invincibility frames and a plethora of other mechanics that are much easier to deal with in a Turn Based setting especially keeping in mind the Adult side of the game. All that to say if YOU AS THE DEVS want to do some sort of Action Combat system I suggest leaning into simpler Character Action Combat like Bayonetta or the old Bloodrayne(yes I consider Bloodrayne to be Character Action alongside DMC and Bayonetta) games or Skyrim/Oblivion style combat and mechanics. Plus with something akin to Skyrim/Oblivion you folks could even give the Oblivion style of Skill growth a shot, could be fun in an Adult Game and could still have skill trees if you wanted. Finally, I also have to at this point agree with folks that are getting somewhat tired of the People Pleasing (you do a great enough job at this with all the options you give to customize ones own experience btw), you're never going to please everybody so I honestly think ya'll gotta start thinking more about what YOU want to make, asking peoples opinions is great and I seriously appreciate it, 1 of the reasons I won't stop supporting the team but what about you folks as the Devs? Where do your guys desires lay as far as what you really want to create and bring to life?

I'm sick of every game trying to do Souls shit. A couple months ago, you wanted to ape E33 with convoluted menus, now you want to ape Souls with more of the same but with its mechanics. Sounds like an identity crisis in the making, where we will ultimately end with a game that doesn't even know what it wants to be. Stop trying to do design-by-committee and make the game that YOU want to play and what YOU find fun, as this is YOUR game at the end of the day. Preserve the design integrity by sticking to your vision instead of trying to appeal to everyone.

You know that saying “only kids make choices, adults take everything”? Well, when it comes to sex mechanics, I personally feel YC’s style has more going for it — there’s actual back-and-forth, more resistance, and it just feels more fun to play. City Hero’s current system is a bit too one-note for me: pretty much just dominate or get dominated. And once the sex starts, the enemy just keeps losing HP non-stop… Boss fights end after three climaxes and I’m still left wanting more. So yeah, I’d love to see something closer to YC’s approach, or at least some tweaks to make the sex battles last a bit longer and feel more interactive. Just sharing a personal preference

Simple souls-like would be okay. Customization is good, complicated gameplay is not, because it gets in the way of the sexy stuff where these games really shine. Kinky Fight Club 2 is by far my most played Mr Z Game because of that.

Nevarre · October 10, 2026

If you haven't seen it before, I would suggest watching some gameplay footage of Champions of Norrath (especially the second one, "Return to Arms"). It's an isometric action hack-and-slash game that has a unique style. It feels similar to blending action RPGs with distant MMO style camera. The controls are somewhat simple while still being really fun, but build complexity and loot variety is strong. I think it may be an interesting source of inspiration that sits somewhere between the action RPG and MMO space, and it would work perfectly with AI party members.

One thing I to suggest though I don't know if it is doable or not is if you are going to go with a souls like or action RPG maybe consider having something like an ability to pause gameplay while in battle like they have in Fallout this way players have some way of taking in what is going on around them (or more likely to them) and can take their time to enjoy it while they plan their next move.

K
Kit · October 10, 2026

The MMO targeting style suggestion sounds good to me, if you were wanting to do party's though, like as mentioned a little here and in the previous poll, it sounds a bit like Dragon Age? The combat there was really quality in my opinion with each character having a clear role.

That guy · October 10, 2026

I've given my votes, but I'd like to just add: Deviance seems to be a very near and dear passion project of yours. I've seen too many similar projects fall "prey" to design by patreon vote, ending up not where the creator envisioned. I hope you can stay true to your vision! That said, my two votes were on the Simplified and Medium Soulslike types, simply because I'm a sucker for grabs and submission holds and such - I love the idea of fumbling a hit or hitting an enemy counter which results in an unavoidable, sexy, damaging grab against you.

I would say a soulslike with some complexity sounds amazing, one of my favourite h games is night of revenge, the gameplay is complex enough to feel rewarding, but also simple enough that you can brute force your way trough.
