OUT OF CURIOSITY...

I've been torn on what kind of game project I'd want to create and what kind of games ya'll would prefer. Imagining a game like SFRPG, if you HAD to choose between these extremes: which would you prefer?

Linear Storyline -

An RPG with plenty of elements of customization but, ultimately a clear linear storyline (even if there are branching paths). Something more like a traditional RPG or, at its most ambitious, something like Baldur's Gate III. This allows for deeper storytelling, character writing and general world-development.

The 'con' to a linear storyline is that it would inevitably limit the freedoms you have to play out your own scenarios. Certain events/concepts would be locked behind storyline beats. For example, if there was one specific moment you wanted to get to, you might have to slog through several plotlines you're less interested in to get to it.

Kink Sandbox -

No real story, instead the game is an open world filled with various scenarios and tools to play out kink fantasies over and over again in. There's no 'goal' per-se and no 'ending' to work towards. Just a world where you start small and get huge by any means you want.  The game would be more focused on exploration and writing your own narrative.

Naturally the 'con' is a fairly static-feeling world and no big storyline to discover.

If you got questions or need elaboration let me know. I wrote this up spur-of-the-moment so I may not be clear.

With kinky games, I usually prefer sandbox, so that I can pick and choose the parts I like. Being forced into a linear story full of the parts you don't care about just so you can get to the parts you DO care about can be frustrating.

I'm definitely on team linear storyline, in part because I think sidequests can essentially provide the sort of flexibility a sandbox would.

I went with the linear option solely because I think having a story surrounding the different scenarios would be better and more enjoyable to experience. The sandbox would also be very fun, but it wouldn't have the same impact and for me at least there'd have to be some time between replays. Although I do think you could strike a balance with these too! I recall you working on a cafe/server game alongside Sweet which could have a linear story with a sandbox mode. It could start as easily as linear and flow into a freeplay mode after the story.

i'm kinda torn between options - like its easier to engage with a sandbox cause u dont have to dedicate time to it and block out a period where your attention is solely on get fat game. but if its like. engagement you want me to engage more and on details and to be memorable then a linear game does better for that. - tho i kinda like to have low engagement games avaliable for when my depression is there and im outta mood but its a sometimes food and i wouldnt list them among my favourite games.

I personally like the best games with a storyline that kinda gives you something to work towards, without it being the sole focus of the game, with side optional content and different ways of doing things. Another reason why I think it's better is, replayability through multi-choices and different endings.

A well-crafted story simply hits better.

For me it’s like: Ehhh. If I wanted to make my own story; I could and I would. Hell I used to. But I don’t delight solely in my imagination. It’s in finding other experiences, dipping into how someone else might interpret kinks I share. Your stuff’s a delight -and it’s what I’m subbed for: The next drop from the Midnight Snail crew.

This is wicked close. With SFRPG, i think what makes it so great is you have a linear objective (don't get fired) and nonlinear ways to arrive at that point (make monster fat). Sacrilegious though this may be, I think having the main objective not explicitly be 'make monster fat' gave that game huge legs to stand on. I think alot of kink games, regardless of they're linear or non-linear, become a bit boring because that's the big focus of the game. They def lose out on replay-ability, which is one of SFRPG greatest strong suits. You can dote on one girl she's titanic, or slowly fatten up the whole office or have a few favorite that you amble through. I'm going with linear cuz I'm quite excited what longer terms storylines you can cook up (oh and also your char/design work for a party I'm sure would be amazing)

While I like the idea of a sandbox where you can create your own story, I feel like it would be limited not only to the player's imagination, but also to the systems put in place to enable this. It would probably take a lot of work to ensure your interactions with the world doesn't get repetitive. Personally, I prefer a linear story because the experience can be specifically tailored towards these character and world interactions. Having your choices affect the story could be lovely too. Admittedly, I love the characters in your games so this is something that appeals to me more. Maybe a compromise would be a free play mode of sorts post-game where you can have additional interactions with characters? With linear stories there is often that feeling of not getting enough out of the main game, at least for me.

With the worlds you’ve created I’d love to see a more linear game. I can easily see it be something like your character or the main character starts off as an intern at a company in your demon/monster world and they work their way up to ceo. The party members could be coworkers.

Both sound really fun, but if I had to choose, a more linear game sounds really appealing. Especially since that means non-player characters (and their waistlines) can also develop through the game and have it feel impactful! (Either way I'm super excited >:3 )

If it means anything, something like NPCs that you could steadily feed and fatten would still be available in a sandbox. Like the bunny performers in the casino or the cow in the barn. Just clarifying, if that changes your opinion let me know!
