Into the Woods

Hey all! We noticed there are a lot of you that are pretty vocal about doing the broadway version for Into the Woods rather than the Disney movie, but we thought it would be best to put it to a vote. Please let us know which one you would prefer!

Troy is hoping to record this week so please let us know ASAP! Thank you! - Leah 💚

I've seen both, and Broadway is definitely better, but I need you to experience what we all had to with James Corden and Johnny Depp. It's the circle of life.

Guys I beg please vote for my girlie Bernadette peters!! On another note: Sunday in the Park with George is an absolute MASTERPIECE that I think you’d love Troy

Putting a poll and then not even honoring the results is kinda fucked

AINT NO WAYYYY there’s over 3k votes and it’s 50/50😭😭

L
Liv Heskett · October 22, 2026

I’m convinced that people are making multiple accounts just to vote for the movie cause there is NO WAY it’s this close. Because why are there not more comments trying to vouch for the movie if that’s the case? Suspicious 😂😭

BROADWAY FIRST ALWAYS!!!!

k
kachow6969 · October 22, 2026

the people voting for bway are obviously very vocal, but based on the voting split they’re not the majority so 🤷🏻‍♀️

v
vick · October 22, 2026

As someone who has seen both, I would easily recommend the Broadway version. The film might be entertaining and visually appealing, but that’s about all it is, ultimately, it’s a shorter, sanitized version of the story—stripping away much of the dark humor that is so essential to the narrative—and it cuts out a great deal of material. Also, James Corden’s performance isn’t particularly strong, he may have his funny moments, but he fails to truly explore the other layers of his character. The only truly good thing about the film is Meryl Streep.

E
Evangeline · October 22, 2026

Please, please, PLEASE don’t watch the movie. I am not exaggerating when I say that half the original plot gets completely axed in the disney adaptation. The whole emotional core is missing in favor of keeping it more family friendly and sanitized. It’s a passable film if you’ve already seen the Broadway recording and just want to throw something on in the background (although the auto tune is awful), but you MUST watch the Broadway recording first. Cant wait for your reaction!!

K
Kam · October 22, 2026

Dude you have to do the broadway version pleaseeee

K
Kenny · October 22, 2026

the into the woods movie is basically into the woods lite. it’s missing so much nuance, humour, and a lot of important pieces of the script and score. if you’re not watching the broadway recording you’re not getting the real experience!!!!!

begging so hard for the broadway version omg. GENUINELY the stage format matters to the story! the movie takes out a pretty key character, unfortunately

C
Chireny de Groot · October 21, 2026

tbh I think troy would enjoy the movie more, you also saw in the hadestown reaction that he just kinda wants sh*ts and giggles and the movie is so ridiculous. Only if he wants to seriously get into the themes and storylines and pay attention to the details he should watch the broadway show! Otherwise the difference isn’t that major and he would have more fun with the movie thats also in better quality.

A
Alayna · October 21, 2026

i feel like the movie is really not as bad as everyone is making it out to be 😭 it’s campy, enjoyable, and has some amazing singers. would love to see troy react to it!!!

M
Matt P · October 20, 2026

Listen, Sondheim might not even be Troy’s thing (he’s an acquired taste for most people) but I’d much rather him hate the broadway proshot than the Disney version and leave him thinking THAT is what Into The Woods is😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 Meryl was the only good part of Disney’s version so i only support Troy watching the clips of Meryl 🤣

P
Patrick Wathen · October 20, 2026

The Disney version does not have the full story. Bernadette Peters as the witch is truly the only way you should experience this for the first time. the video is not going to be great quality but the performances are worth the downgrade. Please don’t subject us to James Corden

B
Breez · October 20, 2026

That was such a close vote. Love the broadway version but I’m still excited to see the Disney reaction

J
JadeNight67 · October 20, 2026

Broadway because the Disney version does not understand that the musical is supposed to funny and very meta... don't get me wrong Meryl EATS as always, but it simply is not the same if you watch the Disney movie

E
Extra Jas · October 20, 2026

The broadway is the best version BUT despite the hate on James Corden and the poor story telling of the Disney version it’s not horrible

V
VegebulMelodies · October 20, 2026

Literally the Disney version cuts so many important plot points of the original out. And Bernadette Peters is best witch.

A
Annie · October 20, 2026

Oh my god I love you dude but if you watch the film over the broadway show I will be so sad!!! I am genuinely begging you to watch the pro-shot of the original broadway cast that is on YouTube. the film, in my opinion, strips the genius of Sondheim out of the story and kills the whimsy.

f
flatluigi · October 20, 2026

IMO the votes are close enough that you should watch the broadway version and then the disney version at a later date. the original is incredible, and the disney version doesn't really hold a candle to it (but it's certainly interesting enough to watch and compare)

K
Kristin Dorner · October 19, 2026

I was so excited when they made the Disney version and I have never left a movie so disappointed. Sondheim especially has so much complexity and soul in his stories and the new version watered it down so so sooooo much it took away the heart of the story. Plus, as much as I love Meryl Streep not a single soul can out-witch Bernadette Peters.

N

k
kachow6969 · October 19, 2026

for a first watch i think the disney movie is significantly more enjoyable, and everyone complaining about the performances or things being changed are just being annoying and pretentious sorry i said it. the broadway version is nostalgic and quality in its own right, but personally i don’t think it holds up in 2026 as someone’s introduction to the show. the actual recording quality is terrible (not their fault of course but terrible nonetheless) and the audience is annoying

J
Jordan Murphy · October 19, 2026

False

J
Jeff Pierpoint · October 19, 2026

Personally I believe the movie does not adequately flesh out the themes, characters, and emotional arcs that Sondheim so carefully crafted. The original Broadway recording is, to me, the definitive and best way to experience Into the Woods the way that Sondheim intended 💜

e

L
Lenny Lou · October 19, 2026

Literally us theater nerds just fell in love with the broadway version because it’s the OG. It really is rough to watch in 2026. The quality is just silly and the live audience doesn’t give what I used to think. The movie as a whole is great and I think Troy would fully love it better.

s

A

A
Alexander · October 19, 2026

For future reference, if Into the Woods sends Troy (or anyone else!) down the Sondheim rabbit hole, while professional filmed versions of stage musicals were pretty rare prior to Hamilton and other recent shows, we are really lucky that most Sondheim musicals (except Assassins, sadly, which is one of my favourites) have been professionally filmed (e.g. not bootlegs - filmed for broadcast on TV or for airing in movie theatres) and can be watched online etc. Some of the Sondheim pro shots are filmed versions of more recent productions: - the National Theatre production of Follies starring Imelda Staunton - the Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along starring Daniel Radcliffe and Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendes - the Broadway revival of Company starring Raul Esparza - A Little Night Music was filmed for PBS’s Live from the Lincoln Centre in a production by the New York City Opera. Of the Sondheim proshots this is the only one that I wouldn’t fully recommend - it has never been made commercially available on streaming or DVD and so the version you can find online is just an upload of a VHS taping of the original TV broadcast. BUT ALSO a bunch of the Sondheim proshots are filmed versions of the original productions, which was *incredibly* rare for the time, including: - Into the Woods - Sunday in the Park with George - Passion (all three filmed for broadcast on PBS with the original Broadway casts in the 1980s and 1990s) - Sweeney Todd (technically not the original Broadway cast, but they filmed the first national US tour the year after it was on Broadway and a lot of the cast are the same as the Broadway cast, including Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett) - Pacific Overtures (which is a musical Sondheim wrote about the UK and America forcing their way into Japan economically in the 1800s starring an almost entirely Japanese cast, and which was filmed for broadcast on Japanese television in the 1970s and someone in Japan taped it on VHS and so we can watch the original 1976 musical which is frankly a miracle because absolutely nobody in America would have financed a film of such a strange (but brilliant) musical.

J

N
Nolan Henningson · October 19, 2026

Watch the Broadway version I’m begging you! The movie is lacking so much of the humor, which is a slap in the face to Sondheim imo.

L
Liv Heskett · October 19, 2026

If it sways your decision Marc Platt is the major producer of the film and that man is so awful and tried to tank Rachel Ziegler’s career for supporting Palestine. He basically threatened to blacklist her from the industry. Same with one of the most recent Glindas on Broadway in wicked. Don’t give him your streams or money. Also weirdo Johnny depp is also in it and I can’t watch him without feeling gross ESPECIALLY in this role (iykyk)

K
Kristin Dorner · October 19, 2026

OMG I totally forgot he was even in it! Ugh, there is no comparison, the Broadway wolf is so much better.

L
Lenny Lou · October 19, 2026

He’ll probably have to do both honestly. The broadway recording is just not that good idk why people are going ten toes down for it. The broadway ‘version’ is better but it’s not like he can go to a show.

i
isa · October 19, 2026

the James Corden version is so bad GUYS PLEASE think of Bernadette Peters

A
Alexander · October 19, 2026

The play also does really interesting things with the character of “The Narrator” and breaking the Fourth Wall to comment on the nature of fairy tales and their role in our lives/culture. The film gets rid of all of that, presumably because they thought that breaking the fourth wall would make it more difficult for audiences to suspend disbelief in the context of a movie, but part of what makes Sondheim such a brilliant composer/lyricist/writer is how he plays around with form and I think getting to experience and react to those more experimental or bold approaches probably adds more than whatever is “added” by the CGI effects and glossier production values of film vs. stage.

a
a · October 19, 2026

as a sondheim fan, i can 100% tell u that the movie misses the mark with its core and message (it cuts a song that is pivotal to one of the main character's arc)!! the movie also just removes the charm and humor that the musical had, even with its somber/grim tone

Compared to the Broadway version, the Disney version is terrible (tbh even not compared to the bway version it’s mediocre at best). The Broadway version has so much more heart and talent (sorry Meryl, you’re not a musical theater girly). HIGHLY recommend the bway version!

I think you should watch the Disney version of it first, fall in love with it, then watch the Broadway version, see the full story and fall in love with that one even more. (That's how I saw it and ended up loving both for different reasons), rather than watching the Broadway and then the movie to just hate/dislike it for not being completely accurate like some people in these comments lol.

okay fineeeeeeeeee troy can watch BOTH 😂

r
robbie · October 19, 2026

before anyone jumps me i voted for the broadway version i swear but i don't hateeeeeee the movie like everyone else does it has its fun moments

A
Alexander · October 19, 2026

The Broadway version is significantly better. Obviously the production and CGI in the movie is different than a filmed version of a stage production, but basically all Sondheim musicals are emotionally complex and ambivalent and a lot of the filmed adaptations try to make them more accessible by sanding down the less sympathetic aspects of characters and cutting songs that add thematic nuances to the story. Although, watching any version of it now is watching it in a pretty different context from when it was first created. The musical was written in the middle of the AIDS crisis and a lot of the themes about found family and the unpredictable nature of tragedy and how life doesn’t have a simple fairy tale morality where good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people were seen as an allegory for the crisis and its impact on the theatre community at the time, even though there isn’t anything in the actual show directly about that. Over time because the show involves fairy tale characters it has become Sondheim’s most popular show with high school productions etc. and so I’m curious what messages/themes viewers like Troy who encounter it for the first time in 2026 take away from it.

A
Alexander · October 19, 2026

Plus, while I adore Meryl Streep as a non-singing actress, when it comes to musical theatre, if you have the opportunity to see Bernadette fucking Peters sing a role that she created/originated, you do not want to miss out on that.

S

L
Laura Walter · October 19, 2026

the fact that most of these comments are pro-broadway speaks for itself!!! troy please 😭😭

L
Liv Heskett · October 19, 2026

The movie completely strips away the original message of the show and also lacks its humor. Stephen Sondheim himself really didn’t like the Disney adaptation of his own show. So like genuinely if you want to get the best experience you should watch the pro shot from the 80s. I have never been more passionate about convincing you to watch a certain version of something. But as someone who got their theater degree and is a massive Stephen Sondheim fan I can tell you that this is the consensus for most people in the theater world.

A
