The Outer Worlds Is An Absolute Nightmare - Patreon Only Release

Done sooner than I planned. Enjoy :)

Next Patreon exlusive video will be out in Sep and will be S.T.A.L.K.E.R or CyberPunk 2077.

This video will ONLY be released for Patreons (and YouTube members) so no public release.

Oblivion review out in 2/3 weeks on YouTube, then S.T.A.L.K.E.R is the next Patreon only vid.

Suicide reference at 7:10 (it isn't heavy or mature rated, but thought I better say as this sort of stuff I can't do on YouTube)

Fun video, as always, but one major critique of the video that I have is that you somewhat misrepresented the skill and skill point system. There are 7 core skills and those 7 core skills govern the 18 specialized skills. Yes, putting points into the core skill Stealth at level up will increase the specialized skills Sneak, Hack, and Lockpick, but that's only until those specialized skills get to a certain level, 50. Once a specialized skill is at 50 or higher, putting points into it's governing core skill will no longer increase the specialized skill. To increase a specialized skill beyond that threshold, you have to put points directly into it. The core skills represent broad, basic knowledge of that specific subject but once you've gotten the basics, in order to get better at any specific subject you'll have to dedicate resources to honing that skill. Think of doctors irl. (ideally) All medical doctors have a working knowledge of the human body, all of its systems, how they function, and how they interact with one another. That's like the core skill, Medical Doctor, and some doctors will choose to specialize by deep diving into specializations like Cardiology or Oncology. The skill point system allows to players to obtain a basic, working knowledge of all specialized skills but doing so comes at the cost of being truly good with any skills. It's the very embodiment of a "Jack of all trades, master of none."

This was really great video! I do wish it was longer, but really enjoyed it and I hope you give a review for Outer Worlds 2.

How could you not understand the stat system? If you focus in real life on your health then you can run faster and lift more weight. However you need to focus on specific exercies if you wanna be even faster or do one trip with full bags to the groceries instead of two. What disapointed me about this game is how every place is build on the same post industrial capitalistic mentality. Different planets same culture when Fallout had tribes next to each other with different ideologies. The game also lacks simple gameplay mechanics which are very reason why Bethesda titles are so easy to play. New Vegas was build on Fallout 3 and shares those pros. Outer Worlds is solid but inferior sadly.

Hii! I understood it, I just didn't like it

Lovely video, I always found the Outer Worlds very okay, the combat just felt a bit restrictive and indeed the skills were a bit of a mess. That having said, I did really like the main cast of characters and how you can command them to do things and the worlds and its people were interesting enough to make me keep playing. I still have to finish it one day however, the last memory I had was that my character was so powerful I could take on the entire planet where the board resided with just my minigun!

man, you pretty much nailed what i disliked about the game. but what irked me the most was how some mechanics just.. did not make sense or made it unplayable to a large degree on higher difficultys. when i think about it, wonder if there is a mod that sort some of these mechanics issues.. that said, you gonna give the second game a spin then? iw not had time to try it yet, but iw been told its better at least.

I have really positive memories of this game, and I think the main reason why was because I decided to immediately subvert what I assumed the plot was meant to be on my first play through. For fun, the moment I got the ship I immediately went to see if I could sell out Phineas by turning him in to the guy on the Groundbreaker. I was so impressed that I basically got to play the 'bad guy' through the entire game. I completed it that way, and then went back at some point later to re-play it by joining Phineas's side. Overall, I found that it was quite a limited game in terms of gameplay, characters, and story - I agree with a lot of what you put in this video. That said, I really appreciated what it did do well, and I put more time into playing it than I do most games.

Best ending yet. Good work, Guy.

Sir Kelendor · July 13, 2026

The biggest sin obsidian made when making this game was the complete lack of nuance, phineas is just the objective good guy and the board are just objective villains. Its lame and bad writing, like yeah mega corporations usually awful, but like there is still costco, arizona tea, and steam sticking to principles. Where is the nuance in the story?

Yeah I found the game lacklustre and boring.

Yay! I know it has its faults but I love this game. Really liked the DLC adventure at the soda/candy factory too but I wish it had just been part of the base game. It leaned a bit more into zany fun.

UpIsNotJump · July 10, 2026

I'll do the DLC for just you guys too :) Sorry for being such a misery! I did really love the last 3rd tho

You hit every note perfectly lol. Most of the game was just random bs, and I wasn't attached to the plot until the very end. Tuna tuna tuna tuna

Just subbed after having seen the short. Been watching for ages and I've been waiting for this review since the Outer Wilds video (which has since became one of my top 3 games I'm just annoyed I didn't listen to your warning to go play the game back then because I thought I wouldn't like the game so just ignored the warning XD)

D
Dosbilliam · July 9, 2026

I'd say the storyline is the question "what do they eat?" drawn to the game's length, really. :P

Travis Reis · July 9, 2026

Bravo! Though no mention of best companion Pavarti?

U

Agreed she was best :) I wasn't crazy on any of them tho, they were a bit forward/expository with thier dialogue

It does in fact suck that Outer Worlds forces the the reputation decrease regardless of stealth, I wonder if they took inspiration from Fallout 4 for that shit. I see you had Vicar Max with you. I assume that means you quite liked his character arc? The man is the incarnation of LSD trips. I do agree there could be more insane ways to navigate to Outer Worlds' environments and social aspects. While yes you CAN in fact join The Board early in the game if you talk to someone in Groundbreaker (it's been awhile, I have not explored this route but know that you can kill Phineas this way, allegedly), FONV has far more going for it in that regard given not just the factions but the total sandbox there is to play in. Much flexibility. Rant: I honestly think it would've held Outer Worlds back substantially if you could explore every planet thoroughly. The amount to see and do would basically be non-existent, completely drift from the themes and main purpose of the game, ultimately take way too long to think of and code in a shit ton of stuff, require a level of elaboration on the mechanics and each planet's lore that would've set this game back at least three years, and also on top of that require a level of planning to make everything look as alien and not just Earth with a slightly atomicpunk coat of paint as possible. I know people love full open world games especially back then but it's all fun and games until you're exploring a volcano that you could have explored in literally any other survival game that was more focused on those themes. Obsidian is a good game studio for refusing to do all of that despite what people who know fucking nothing about good game design thing, especially people who can't stop one second and ask themselves "what WOULD it have been like to play a game that fully fleshed out every world possible with nothing to do." Oh right, nevermind, we actually got that and people pissed and shit their pants over it like whiny little babies. It was called Starfield. And also No Man's Sky which is still getting updates. The other game you covered Elite Dangerous has a completely different resonance and intent to Outer Worlds, it would not be able to be made the same. Also it would be nothing like Fallout New Vegas in function and that would make people shit themselves just as hard as if this had ended up being Starfield. I have been inspired by this video, thank you very much.

Come to think of it just clicked in my brain didn't yoU ALREADY do an Outer Wilds video? I don't know why it took me so long to remember, I recall you talking about how much you really enjoyed its story and looping aspect.
