Anne Hatha-Hate with Eve Lindley
This month Eve Lindley educates Sarah on one of the most important historical events in recent memory: The day seemingly everyone in America woke up and suddenly hated Anne Hathaway.
Though this episode is coming out on February 1, it is a January bonus episode at heart. You will get another February episode later this month.
Content Warning: There are references to extreme dieting for a role discussed at about 45 minutes into this episode.

Good episode! I liked Ella Enchanted and Princess Diaries was fine. I felt like there was an oversaturation of beautiful young actresses in "ugly duckling" tropes at the time. Even Devil Wears Prada was "dumpy, unfashionable girl" suddenly looks like a model. Anne's natural effervescence and dazzling smile made her roles stand out as even more unrealistic. (Not her fault.) I was never really a hater. Although, I recall her having a seeming facade of serenity in a lot of interviews at the time, which I found grating. She just didn't present authenticity in a way the public wanted.
Okay but can we talk at some point about how completely bonkers Princess Diaries 2 is?
I would love a Phantom of the Opera episode!
I was surprised there was nothing in this episode about how she dated a con artist
My thoughts exactly. I think at the time She had really bad publicity.
This type of episode along with the Karen Carpenter, Debi Thomas style is exactly the You’re Wrong About we love :)
as a survivor (and especially given your episode on the topic) I was extremely disappointed by eve’s johnny depp-amber heard “both sides” comment at the end. please educate yourself about this case before speaking on it, it’s immensely triggering for many people.
I don’t think Eve meant both sides had a point, just that the trial overall was horrible and awful. She didn’t really comment on someone being “right”
Omg, thank you so much for this episode. I remember being so annoyed in like 2013 for the way Anne Hathaway was contrasted against Jennifer Lawrence (no hate to J-Law) bc Anne like… took herself seriously… and that was apparently the worst thing she could do as a professional actress who had just won an Oscar?
Loved this duo! More Eve, please.
I agree! I want more Eve!
Just listened. This was fantastic!
I'm only here to say: 1. Thank you so much for the episode. 2. Thank you for reminding me of "Colossal" and how much I LOVE that movie.
Why did I start crying when Eve said she was off book for her Encore piece? I am a theatre kid, I’m a theatre teacher and a community theatre performer and advocate I love Annie!
Loved hearing Eve -- she was so good on Dispatches! Also, while it only got briefly mentioned, Colossal is such a good film, and one that's so much more than people might expect from the trailer. Also note that it has some stuff that could be triggery around gaslighting and abuse (especially if you go in expecting a goofy indy sci-fi movie).
I have never had strong feelings about Anne Hathaway but I absolutely loved Eve Lindley in Dispatches From Elsewhere and I am forever telling strangers to watch it. I do hope that she has many shampoo bottle moments to come!
Omg, what is there to know about Phantom of the Opera?!
Does anyone know access code for event in BK in April?
Additionally, yes, I am so proud of Kathryn Newton for going from Supernatural to a solid big screen career. I'm like, "That's my girl!" Why are we like this?!
I discovered her in the TV family drama series Get Real with Jesse Eisenberg. ❤️ I just loved that she was beautiful AND short waisted (I'm a tall, short waisted person, lol).
hearing Sex and the City characters described as dolls that we can still play with as adults is the single greatest metaphor I've heard all year
I dunno if this is addressed in the eppy, which I am planning to skip because I am very comfortable in my Anne Hathahate, but while preparing for Les Mis she got deep into sex worker exclusionary radical feminism (swerf) including denouncing AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL as being 'run by pimps'. This kind of fear mongering by uninformed celebrities, (especially as it relates to lobbying against the decriminalisation of sex work) creates real barriers to safety and community participation for the most some of the world's most marginalised workers and has big 'let them eat cake' energy, which has definitely historically been a hate-inspiring vibe. Sorry if this is addressed in episode, but the anti-trafficking lobby is often just the anti-workers' rights lobby wearing even worse outfits.
On this note I’d love to just mention that the p-word is a slur and we ask to be called sex workers. I understand Les Mis is set in a historical time period, but it’s also set in France, so it’s not like the p-word is necessary to be used when discussing it.
Loved this episode and now I'm diving back into a Les Mis phase--I never saw the movie because I'd already loved the musical as a child and was sort of bitter about it becoming "mainstream" But while looking for videos of her performance in the film (which was remarkable!😱) I found this gem of her rap battle with James Corden that I'd like to share with you all https://youtu.be/_MR2-vBYRjM As a socially awkward person growing up, Anne Hathaway's persona made me feel like there was hope for a person like me Love her even more after hearing more about her 💕
Colossal is such a good movie
Please do more episodes with Eve!
Seconded
Oh man, I love her now but as someone who LOVED the book Ella Enchanted I know why I hated Anne Hathaway. They ruined that book, just, barely a shred of the original story made it into the movie.
Another Ella book stan here! I didn’t mind the movie, but it was soooo different that I kind of just view them as totally separate properties. 😂
Hi Sarah: I am a big fan of yours. I was wondering if you would ever do an episode on Charlotte Bronte. The time in her life when she went to work in a school in Brussels is very interesting. I remember you saying that at one time you were writing a thesis on Jane Eyre. Thanks, Nancy
An episode about “Devil Wears Prada” was mentioned? Did I miss it?
It was for Sarah’s other podcast, You Are Good!
Sarah really got me with that Jenna Maroney thing it is truly one of my deepest darkest fears to be seen as a “Jenna Maroney” haha
Did you miss the Lip Sync Battle?! https://youtu.be/tjqxq1HTkB0
I am embarrassed to say that I was a low-key Hatha-hater and I always knew exactly why she bugged me, and it is summed up simply; her affectation and complete lack of self-awareness. Now to be clear, I don't know her, I will never know her, and her affectation has zero impact on me - but I know, if I see her being interviewed, I will roll my eyes at least 4 times.
Oh, and she actually works!

I was like, wait a minute, we hated Anne Hathaway? I’m behind on a lot of things. I was also behind about a year on the James Franco sex scandal, and the day after listening to this I happened upon an interview which I will link, attempting to clarify -I guess?- how things had gone wrong and he ended up sleeping with students in his acting school. I was like, man he is such a DICK! He was cagey as fuck. I laughed so hard, I seriously couldn’t believe it. From what it sounded like on the show with the disastrous cohosting, he threw her to the wolves so he could seem cooler than her in a very high school kind of way. I did watch a little bit more of what I think were other parts of this interview (sex scandal) where he’s talking about addiction, and I liked him a little bit better… but he just seems like somebody who has to ask a lot of forgiveness for not spending enough time being self aware. Plus I was already mad at him about the Anne thing. Something like the Emmys obviously, it’s going to be very high stakes. It’s not a high school popularity contest. You don’t have to be a malignant asshole, there are probably other ways one can gain popularity, like with personality or talent. Long live Anne Hathaway! She’s prettier than him anyway.
This interview with Matt Lauer is when I became a diehard Hathaway fan. Obviously it’s unfair he put her in a situation where she had to be that clever to keep the conversation on the movie, and also, this is when I went, oh, this is a woman who is *good* at what she does. https://youtu.be/dB_fE6reLxc
That's such a great clip! I totally agree
I vaguely remember hearing friends talking about how much they hated Anne Hathaway. I got no explanation as to why and was generally confused about the whole thing, but I don't think I lost sleep over it. Thankful for this podcast that will make me probe more critically in the future when society inevitably turns on another woman just living her life.
Great episode. Always such insightful commentary on how our society creates these kinds of situations.
Listening to this as someone who wasn’t super online when this happened - i was 13 and wasn’t on Twitter - I’m kind of shocked? I’ve loved Anne Hathaway my whole life, in 2008 my mum had a brain tumour removed and her friend who owned a dvd rental store lent us a big bag of DVDs to watch and we watched Ella enchanted together. I saw les mis with my mum in cinemas. I grew up on princess diaries. I kind of can’t believe people hated my girl?
great episode! but now I’m gonna need a phantom of the opera feature stat
yall are jennifer lawrence fall truthers????
I didn’t notice the Anne hate I guess bc I wasn’t really on twitter at that time (it was before the great Tumblr exodus of 2017). So I was genuinely surprised by ppl saying she was hated. But I did notice that she got less movie roles but I thought she just wanted to do more theatre.
brilliant
I think the last time I watched any of the Oscars was the year that Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin hosted together. It was WEIRD, man. I love Steve Martin and strongly dislike Baldwin so they had a strange energy. The part I really remember was when they showed a pre-recorded skit the two had done which Paranormal Activity spoof. They had to share a hotel room the night before and recorded it for some reason and it was COMEDY DEATH. This episode is great, it made me like Anne even more than I already did.
Thank you for once again having discourse on why we hate on women for existing, working, performing, doing well, making mistakes…you know, being human.
Eve is so droll and insightful! Please have her back — you’re a great duo!
I always forget she went though this hate period, she’s just so iconic!!
eve is incredible and so are you sarah, what a wonderful episode! i feel bad for the non-patreon regular listeners because they’re really missing out!!!
Can eve be the new cohost pls I love her
I could have listened to this if it was 6 hours
So nice to hear that Sarah listens to Sentimental Garbage 🥰
Wow that was such an immensely satisfying episode. Eve Lindley needs to come back for more episodes!
“god knows i talked a lot about how much i loved eating when i didn’t eat anything before 4pm as a rule” goddamn Sarah this made me stop everything and sit. thank you for being real, your words have always and continue to help us heal.
How did they skip the whole dress drama on Oscar night between her and Amanda Seyfried? Anne Hathaway changed her dress choice because she got a heads up that someone else was wearing a similar one and had to apologize to Valentino after the show for wearing Prada instead. Then it was revealed that it Amanda Seyfried wore the similar dress. Of course Anne Hathway was made to be the villain of the lame non-story. I thought that was the clincher for all the snowballing hatred after. Glad Anne is staying true to her weirdo self. Poor Jennifer Lawrence is rebounding from her Hath-a-hate phase now too.
this! I remember so much talk about the dress drama... even more so than the speech (in my twitter bubble)
Y'all, Anne Hathaway went to my bff's synagogue and she was always just completely and obviously special. People hated her for that and it was so weird because of any of those haters had gotten the chance to be her friend, they would have jumped at it. She was just fucking busy doing incredible things. This is a great episode, BTW.
Colossal was so, so good. Criminally underrated and under appreciated.
I always loved Anne Hathaway and wasn't on Twitter until her comeback so I didn't see all the hate, but it really boggles my mind. Also the reveal that the Jennifer Lawrence fall was rehearsed. Love Jennifer Lawrence too though.
her cameo on the simpsons has my whole heart
Can we talk about the weird Mormon movie she did before princess diaries haha
Oh. My. GAWWWWWD. I just looked it up and SHE was in that??? When I was like 11 two of my friends came with to my family cabin and we rented that movie from the gas station (it’s called The Other Side of Heaven) not knowing anything about it. As we watched it with my parents it became increasingly clear it was Mormon propaganda…we laugh about it now but my atheist parents were HORRIFIED they’d accidentally showed this to my friends.
I love listening to Eve talk about pop culture… I’m manifesting Eve being on YWA more often or having her own pop culture podcast 🤞🤞🤞
Really enjoyed Eve!
This episode and so much of your work reminds me of Rayne Fisher Quann’s essay “Woman’d” !
I was a kid all of the 2000s and would always claim Anne Hathaway was my favorite actress. I loved Bride Wars. I think I simply blocked out any and all Anne Hathahate. And upon reflection, as a queer woman, it was not me appreciating her acting skills (not to discredit her amazingness) but I just had the biggest crush on her from Princess Diaries, Ella Enchanted, and Get Smart. I still have a crush on her. Can’t wait for her Harry styles fanfic MILF movie.
She was fantastic in Colossal!
Great episode! Just wanted to note that Les Misérables is not actually about the French Revolution (which happened in 1789). The events of the novel take place in the years beginning with the Bourbon Restoration after Napoleon’s defeat and exile in 1815-1816, which lasted until the successful second (and final) overthrow of the Bourbon monarchy and its replacement with the more liberal, constitutional Orleanist monarchy in 1830. The novel culminates in the June Rebellion of 1832, a radical republican uprising in Paris that was swiftly crushed. That rebellion faded into obscurity over time, especially in light of the Revolutions of 1848 that swept Europe, but Victor Hugo had been an eyewitness to it and so felt inspired to write about it. In doing so, he raised awareness of the June Rebellion when Les Misérables was published in the 1860s, at the height of Emperor Napoleon III’s power. Interesting context. Sorry for the lengthy correction, but I’m a history “buff” and not a lot of people appear to be aware of the historical events that inspired Victor Hugo or the context in which he was writing. Anyway, great episode and I’ve long been a fan of Anne Hathaway. I only vaguely remembered the Oscar fiasco with James Franco (who unsurprisingly was a lot more at fault there) so it’s interesting to reflect back on it a decade-plus later. Thanks!
As a fellow history buff, and as someone who wrote an extensively researched paper comparing Les Mis to its historical reality back in college, I have to say I heartily disagree with your assessment. It bothers me when people end the French Revolution with Napoleon when France continued to have revolutions every so often until the third republic was established in 1870, finally converting France to democracy for good. The rebellion part of Les Mis is one of the many failed smaller rebellions, and would have faded into obscurity had Victor Hugo not been an eye witness to it and wrote about it. But it is still wrapped up in this much larger string of French revolutions. Louis Phillipe, who they are rebelling against in Les Mis, was overthrown in 1848. Charles X was overthrown before him. So yes, still very much the French Revolution.

I sort of missed the whole hating on Anne thing when it happened and now knowing what happened I understand it even less. When she was unrehearsed and more authentic (as actors go) she was "too much" but when she tried harder she was too rehearsed? I just don't get it. Like who you want to like in movies, as people, whatever, but this level of vitriol baffles me for such non-crimes. Great conversation.
Same exact thing. I had no idea she was ever "hated" and now that I know what happened, it's absurd.
When I was a kid, we had the Princess Diaries DVD with all the special features, which I watched obsessively. In one featurette, Garry Marshall jokes that he found Anne Hathaway because of her amazing teeth: “often, we just go to a dentist and say, ‘who has the best teeth in your office, can she act?’” I didn’t realize he was joking for maybe ten years, and spent that decade furiously brushing and then religiously wearing my retainer, hoping my dentist would put my photo on the wall for Garry Marshall to find. I was, well, wrong about that, but thanks Anne for the dental inspiration!
this is the sweetest thing
Huge fan of the pod but one issue with this episode —I don’t love that Eve lifted Anne Hathaway up by bringing Jennifer Lawrence down via parroting the conspiracy theory that JLaw’s Oscars trip was on purpose? I distinctly remember people shitting on JLaw at the time for falling and claiming it was intentional so she looked more relatable — as opposed to the more believable cause that it’s easy to fall when you’re going up stairs in a big dress and heels. Given the (very valid) defense throughout the episode against the hate Anne experienced for being a famous woman, it felt weirdly tone deaf to play into the Anne vs JLaw narrative. Still a fan of the pod but yikes that part was a miss
Will never forgive the world for the Anne hate
VIVA ANNE!!!
I loved this episode! I don't know if it's because of Hatha-hate or everyone being so horny for the tooch, but I'm mad for Anne that everyone decided to ignore this: https://www.celebitchy.com/1109/anne_hathaway_was_sexually_har/
Wtf??
love this episode and also: GO PACK
Can Eve guest more often??? I loved her insight and storytelling, especially the joke about rage-sewing jumpsuits lol
The toxic film bro hate of Anne Hathaway for her Les Mis win was so gross. The film club hosted Academy award viewing parties in college and when she won, dudes lost their minds. Also, I think that was the viewing party where I coined my favorite bad joke: Wait until the "In Memorium" is roughly halfway through, sigh, and in your best starry-eyed dreamer voice say "I'll be up there one day!"
Squee! KT Tunstall quote! Ok, finishing the rest of the episode.
hi! the content warning here is not in the Apple Podcasts description and I was really not prepared. is there a way to edit that for future listeners? appreciate you!
Steve Martin and Alex Baldwin were both in It's Complicated with Meryl the year before they hosted the Oscars. Which might account for the pairing? But crucially, they are rivals in the movie and barely interact.
The nonchalant Tremors reference is giving me chuckles
Am I the only one who had completely forgotten about this since it's so out and out bizarre?
this is so crazy i was just watching a family guy episode that had like 3 anne hathaway sucks jokes??
