The Year of the Bimbo with Jamie Loftus
Who isn’t a bimbo? A writer declared 1987 the Year of the Bimbo, and for this episode, Sarah tells bimbology professor Jamie Loftus about the etymology of the word, the surprising history of the people—and animals—who have been given the moniker, and the trifecta of women who became synonymous with the archetype. Digressions include Jumbo the elephant, Playboy’s fact checking, and the restaurant from The Godfather.

Bimbo looks all ways 🩵
How on earth does Sarah have chemistry with like... all my favourite people. I would deeply believe that Sarah and Jamie have been married for ten years, lol.
This is off topic, but I just started my annual re-listen to Michael and Sarah's OJ Simpson episodes. I swear that Sarah said something somewhat recently about finishing the series. Am I making this up?? Is it wishful thinking??
This is my greatest dream
I'm trying my best to divest from Spotify and I'm curious about a couple things. None of the 3 podcasts I subscribe to on Patreon post their main feed episodes here, why is that? I'd much rather listen to them all in one place. If that is not an option, which streaming service pays you the most? Other Patrons, where do you listen to main feed episodes?
i switched to podbean and listen to the main feed there
Sarah, I just listened to the first Devil You Know and it's incredible. I'm so so proud of you and so over joyed that your insight and knowledge are getting to a wider audience. Thank you, bless you
For the bimbo files. After I finished listening to this great episode, the song “bimbo” by an old country artist Jim Reeves came on. Appears to be about a boy having a good time walking through town and eating cracker jacks.
I think of this song every time!!
Tufts University alum here. PT Barnum, owner of Jumbo at the time of his death, was a benefactor of the university. Perhaps an apocryphal story, students hauled his hide up the campus hill. He's been our mascot since. http://tuftsjournal.tufts.edu/archive/2001/october/tufts150/
Game Change is an absolute piece of art.
Laverne & Shirley were widely regarded (by other characters on the show) as bimbo’s, and they had a high school rival who had married a wealthy man and was referred to as “The Bimbo with Bucks”
Bouncing baby bimbo merch! Bouncing baby bimbo merch!
We were the bimbos we were looking for all along 😌
Omg, lol thank you, so much, so much, so, so, so much- for the bouncing bimbo cantor of this episode, thank you, thank you, I needed this, more than I knew, maybe I’m a little delirious, lol, tbh, i just had my appendix out and can’t sleep, but this has helped me, given me so much rich imagery for a painting/art series(more than one actually, lol) that I’ve been a bit stuck on, can’t sleep, can’t turn my brain off, not good for healing, but I was actually laying down the whole time rather than on my walk or painting, anyway, thank you. Your storytelling/reporting has helped me so much in many of the times I’ve been laid up for many years, so thank you for you, and all your youness. I go by L💗 don’t know how to change my profile name
Sarah! I dont know where else to ask. Forever ago you mentioned eating silken tofu as a snack. How you prepare it? Im trying to eat better snack foods and I remember whatever you said sounded super interestimg
The bimbo in me honors the bimbo in you ❤️💞🫶🏻
I love how I’m trans-masc/non-binary and been on testosterone for years, but when I listen to YWA I’m also like, “Yeah! Treat us women like humans!” My eternal inner teen girl likes to sit and listen with me😁
“Clutching to my tiny pebble of second wave feminist.” I loved this episode so much. I laughed SO MUCH. The part about the youth pastor turning a chair around got me so good. And the interlude about Steve Jobs and “what’s-his-ass Fassbender” lololololol Thank you for making your art, Sarah and Jamie.
The first time I specifically remember hearing “bimbo” (although I already knew what it meant, so clearly it was introduced earlier and contextually) was a joke in a 1994 (I was 7 years old) episode of the Focus on the Family radio show (I know, I know—my parents are Jesus freaks), Adventures in Odyssey, and weirdly it was in a sort of almost feminist way? A nerd-but-lovable character is talking to a very slimy type of film producer character, and the following interaction occurs: Eugene Meltsner: ‘Caspio?’ Foster Smith-Hammer: ‘Yeah, he's a character in my new movie.’ Eugene Meltsner: ‘Is that Shakespearean?’ Foster Smith-Hammer: ‘Sort of; it's called "Biker Bimbos From Belview Go Bonkers."’ Eugene Meltsner: ‘Obviously a philosophical work.’ What baby me took from that was that some men call women bimbos, it’s sexualized, and other men object to that. Which is actually not a bad thing to learn tbh! xoxo, A 1987 bimbo
A YWA fan referencing AIO! I recommend checking out the Good Christian Fun podcast if you haven’t already, a different style but in some ways it’s YWA: Christian evangelical pop culture.
I think another subconscious reason why English speakers like using “bimbo” for women—and especially 1920s-40s American English speakers!—is the similarity in sound and mouth feel to lots of other words associated with the ladies, in a sexy way: boobs, bust, bosom, breasts, broad, brassiere… it’s just sort of in the same part of our language brain, imo.
There is Pan Bimbo S. A. a huge global bread company.
Yes! I came here to say the same thing! I'm from Spain and growing up Bimbo bread was the bread most of us ate (and many other products that brand made). It was only years later, after I moved to beloved NZ - side note that I love Sarah's connection to NZ! - that I started listening to YWA eps and heard about the word for the first time!
Okay Reedie here: unlike every other famous person whoever attended Reed, Jobs left absolutely no footprints. Not a single professor or student even remembers him, which considering he is only there for a semester isn't that surprising, except Reed as an institution and Reedies as people are very good at self mythologizing, so the fact that *no one* remember him suggest to me that he probably didn't interact with anyone or go to class. As opposed to say Dr Demento. And when it comes to the accusation about Reedie hotness, most don't get hot until their 30s, case and point my classmate Morgan Spector of The Gilded Age and The Plot Against America, a light Google should clear that up.
You went to school with Mr Russell?? Omg he’s so fine 😩😍 you don’t happen to still have his number do you 🤭 hehe jk… unless…?
love my aunties bimbo 💕
Not my random small town getting called out for our elephant shooting. 😳😢
Fawn Hall update: she and Oliver North got married this year! https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/09/us/oliver-north-fawn-hall-married-iran-contra.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
That was not on my 2025 bingo card
My family has some old nicknames that I assume are the result of a Czech mishearing old slang, especially after this episode, because one is Bimmy, which is specifically male and is basically manchild.
Jambo is a Swahili for hello/ how are you - so I a can easily see Swahili speaking Africans talking to their native fauna, and colonizers bastardization of the language into the word Jumbo.
Yeah, also I’m pretty sure there are some racist slurs that we have mostly forgotten that are said similarly 😔
I am reminded of the time my (now) sister in law was trying to describe a type of doll to me, and she kept googling “bimbo dolls” and it kept coming up with exactly what you would expect, and then it was revealed after much confusion and googling and back and forth, that there is/was a bar in Melbourne called Bimbo’s, and it didn’t have a sign it just had a giant light up kewpie doll, and she thought that kewpie dolls were called bimbo dolls. She showed me the google street view of the bar and I was like “ohhhhhh”
I *believe* this bar is subsequently became known as Kewpie, rather than (per a google search that I just did) “bimbo deluxe”, presumably because they realised it made no sense being called that, and I think it then didn’t survive the post covid era
In German, this word has a veeeery different and pretty racist meaning (a derogatory word for servant, but usually only meaning Black people, i.e. basically another version of the n-word), so it always feels weird and a little disconcerting to hear it being used so casually... 😬
I wonder what the etymology/origin of that is, because it doesn’t really make any sense for it to mean that 💀 like I believe you but I have no idea how it came to be
I credit Sarah and Jamie with my contemplation and improved understanding of feminism. Gender studies is such a fascinating thing, and these two really get to the heart of a lot of complicated facets of it, and they do it from a place of care and curiosity. Thank you ladies, for expanding my mind in a beautiful way.
The first time I heard the word BIMBO was watching Laverne & Shirley as a kid. Every time I hear the word I still think of them 💜🤣
On the history of "Bimbo" let's not overlook the multinational food conglomerate Grupo Bimbo, founded in 1945 in Mexico and starting out making loaves of bread. Today they own LOTS of stuff including Sara Lee and Thomas English Muffins as well as producing a lot of stuff under the Bimbo name. Here's a Wikipedia link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grupo_Bimbo
Where did they get the name? According to that same article "The name was formed as the combination of the Disney Bambi and Dumbo films names, which were the favourite movies of Marinela, Lorenzo Servitje's daughter. " So we go back to the elephant source material again.
I suppose that Jumbo the elephant got his name from the Swahili greeting, now more commonly spelled as "Jambo"
There is still a bimbo’s in north beach San Francisco!!! They are a music/comedy/live show venue!!!!
Arak is a middle eastern liqueur that's made with anise and tastes like black licorice
"I love you, Auntie Bimbo" <3
Yay, Jamie!! And Sarah 🥰🥰
Inside baseball re: JSTOR. They have the BEST library conference tote bags. As in... they run out sometimes best. Be nice to JSTOR reps. They support a great service for research in the humanities and social sciences and have great totemerch.

Here for the “bimbos look all ways” merch
Me a Canadian knowing that there's a statue in honour of Jumbo in Ontario where he died... 😬
Do we have the heart to tell Sarah that Jumbo was runover by a train in Rachel McAdams hometown?
"then Jumbo died, hopefully peacefully" Oh, honey.
totally lumping myself into the year of the Bimbo as I was born in 12/1987 😍
Omgggg me too! I’m an official bimbo! 😍🥰❤️
I hope I’m here to see fourth wave bimbos
The shear pleasure of wearing my Bimbo sweatshirt from the Valentine's special and opening the app to this little nugget of an episode! Sarah, you are the best 💖
I giggled at "well, I think veggie tales can show us the rest" because of the fun fact that they can't! I love silly rules. "You can’t show Jesus in VeggieTales. Moreover, none of the vegetables can be shown to have a “redemptive relationship with God.” This is real, confirmed in 2002 by TIME Magazine. In other words, Bob, Larry and the gang can point kids toward Jesus. They can describe the endless love of God and perfect peace of His saving grace. But they cannot enter into it themselves. Salvation is saved for the crown of God’s creative work alone, and they are just vegetables." https://relevantmagazine.com/culture/never-forget-that-veggietales-werent-allowed-to-show-jesus-as-a-vegetable/
I’m very grateful for this nugget of information, thank you so much 🥒
