The I Hate to Housekeep Book with Miranda Zickler
For many of us, house cleaning is a daunting, unpleasant affair, but for You’re Wrong About editor Miranda Zickler, it is a love language. Continuing the Peg Bracken Book Club tradition set forth by our I Hate Cookbook episode with Sarah Archer, we discuss The I Hate to Housekeep Book, a tongue-in-cheek guide for housewives that came out in 1962. Miranda also shares her background as a housecleaner as she and Sarah get into all the figurative cracks and crevices of the archetypal Home to figure out why keeping our space clean can feel so emotionally charged.

Any chance Miranda Zickler could advise which vacuum to buy? (I've been thinking about this for months, each and every time I use my terrible vacuum)
Just popping in to say this is so lovely and calming and motivating. :) I come back to it and the rest of the YWA cleaning episode canon sometimes when I need to feel okay about cleaning again.
I LOVE a good Sarah “ahhhhh!” This was so much fun- I can’t wait to complete the triple while deep cleaning my house.
When you said Victoria British Columbia, I immediately thought about Michelle remembers
listening to this while doing my job as a cleaner, bought your patreon because I ran out of podcasts to listen to while cleaning
I am binge listening to catch up, and fifteen minutes into this episode I know DEEP IN MY BONES (although as a patron of American Hysteria I knew this intellectually) that the delightful Miranda is not married to a cis man and has no children, because as someone who hangs out in modern feminist circles I can assure you that there are still MANY cis woman married to cis men who are, in the year of our lawd 2025, incapable of doing any housework at all. As far as the children, when you have one or more in your house, you must wipe the countertops every night because otherwise they are mysteriously sticky. (I say "mysteriously" because they start being sticky when your child is too short to reach the counter.) Sara, the best way to tolerate a vacuum cleaner is high-quality earplugs. Also as an auDHD person, it's often somehow less aggravating when YOU are the source of the noise and you can make it stop any time you want to. My husband (I am not married to a cis man, so mine does chores) prefers using a small handheld vac (the sort I still think of as a Dustbuster even though I'm pretty sure they don't make them any more) and he would much rather vacuum the entire floor on his hands and knees with the little vac than pull out the big one. Personally I never use any of them because they're never charged when I need one, so vacuuming is for other people.
And here's Floe's book: https://www.routledge.com/Folklore-and-Zoology/Foxon/p/book/9781032757674?srsltid=AfmBOopoUxJbg0nRo-V5ymV-aZFxACb0rixcy3z7G7cKeaYXn4d_vDJc
This was a cool episode--lots of crossing streams!! And I can't resist touting the work of friend and colleague, Floe Foxon--featured in Newsweek, here: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/17/health/fda-juul.html?unlocked_article_code=1.XE8.iURk.5eNpIJJMKsEx&smid=url-share
this episode was fantastic! eagerly awaiting for maybe a house tour/themed room pics!!
i am waiting for the how to housekeep book for if one has mischievous cats !!!
there was a really weird episode of full house (one of the only ones i remember - i watched it on nick at nite)!where dj wants to start wearing makeup & danny realizes she needs like a woman’s touch in her life at this point & becky gets involved. becky tells the girls that the trick with wearing makeup is to make it look like you’re not wearing any makeup. it was very didactic. i kept thinking of that during this episode!
Does Shark make a bagged vacuum cleaner? Bc bangles vacuums are the devil and I will die on THIS hill
I wish they'd post the regular free episodes here too, I came here to share something about the PeeWee episode and now I don't know where to put my words lol!! 🙊 💜
We always did parties as BYOC for bring your own chair. I can relate to the minimalist not having anything. Did that until I was 32ish through med school and residency
I didn't have "Sarah Marshall introducing my 11yo to the concept of ball-licking" on my bingo card for 2025, but here we are. I was listening to this episode - coincidentally - while hand-washing some dishes (with my Scrub Mommy), while my daughter was listening to something on her headphones, behind me. When you - very loudly and clearly - made the comment about offering to lick balls in exchange for housework, I slowly turned my head, as my husband slowly looked up from whatever he was reading, to see our daughter standing at the fridge, no headphones in sight, her face wide-eyed and frozen in shock. Don't worry, we had a good laugh, and I don't think her trauma will be long-lasting.
Oh My God, Sarah thank you for mentioning clutterbug, Turns out, while I *think* I want a mid-century clean and lean aesthetic, I'm actually a Butter-Bee who wants to see her stuff. (micro v macro organizing depends on the zone).
Can I love more that the cover drawing looks like Gloria Swanson?
Sarah!!! I don't know if you're on the socials at all. But just in case... coyote puppies video via bsky!!!! https://bsky.app/profile/robertloerzel.bsky.social/post/3lrgdlgtcwc2x
if you want to consider adding to the housework theme you can do the book How To Keep House While Drowning!!!
Im not sure how else to let you know but your entire catologue is gone from spotify. None of my other podcasts seem to be effected.
I force quit spotify, rebooted my phone and tried my computer. I guess ill ask spofity for support if it's just my account. Thanks!
I found a copy of this very book while listening to this episode while thrifting today; needless to say I startled the other patrons with my joy.
Petition for Miranda Zickler to drop a cleaning 101 guide
Seconded
Commenting on the very brief hermit crab mention—they CAN be kept in pairs or groups under the right conditions, but it’s often safer for inexperienced keepers to keep them alone until they’re sure their husbandry is up to snuff! Hermit crabs can be social but they can and will fight and kill each other if they don’t have everything they need. When they do have everything they need, they can coexist peacefully. =) It’s all dependent on their circumstances!
Also felt so seen by this episode! Loving both seasonal Mrs. Meyers scents and the Clutterbug philosophy!
Felt seen within the first 4 minutes! Amateur sewist here that LOVES listening to this and all other pods in the You're Wrong About universe while crafting away! 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
mikes mic mention?!?!!??!!
Sylvia Plath on Waffle House was one of the best things I've ever heard.
I have a set of 6 double hooks on the inside of my closet door for hanging clothes I plan to rewear and that works great for me
The best housekeeping book I’ve ever read is just called Organizing Solutions for People With ADHD by Susan Pinsky which is a very dry title for something that changed the way I keep house. She offers really pragmatic solutions that mostly boil down to “do less”. I love how much she focuses the importance of having places to literally just kind of chuck things. The piece of advice that I think is most emblematic of her style is that for a client who could never put laundry away bc sorting and rolling socks was too tedious, she recommended just buying one color of socks and dumping them in the drawer loose without sorting. Pragmatic as hell
Listened to this while cathartically cleaning. Can someone drop the tea tree oil cleaning solution recipe!?
I got a Roomba and it changed my life. It cleans like a blind cat, but gets the job done while I'm doing other things!
Sarah, you have to name your new business Organized Crime!
Shark vacuums are the BEST!! I've had mine for six years and the only thing that's broken was the cord, which was my fault for refusing to unplug it when I got too far away and ended up ripping it out of the wall. A very nice man named Shiraz repaired it for $80.
I love that every episode of this show includes the advice to fire your husband. (I say this as a husband who doesn’t want to get fired!)
I love this episode so much. Thank you for the joy you bring, Sarah Marshall! I am in my early 40s and have a stressful job and lately I just fantasize about having enough time to deep clean my house and let it take as long as it takes. I will never have the time so I continue to scramble and pay for help. But in this day & age when we’re trained to be consumers and yet things become less affordable, I see the appeal of a much simpler existence. To be sure, it’s a case of the grass is greener on the other side.
Personally a big fan of Home Comforts by Cheryl Mendelson
Considering Bad Reviews Of Things We Like is an amazing genre for bonus episodes.
And a Chelsey Weber-Smith Cameo? Yes, please.
Your early discussion about husbands being useless reminded me of this really funny old movie with Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee called "If a Man Answers." In it, Sandra Dee trains her husband, Bobbi Darin, like a dog to get him to do what she wants.
If only Peg had had You're Wrong About to get her through
But what's the Subaru of vacuums? What vacuum would Xena use?
Brb taking a damp rag to all the coffee stains on my door jambs
YWA/Mikes Mic collab when???
I have the cleanest house in the world - because my husband has OCD. I see the gendered roles of cleaning in other people’s houses - but in ours I am the lazy husband 😅
When my parents divorced I was shocked to learn that my dad was the neat freak. I always saw my mom cleaning but as soon as they split he just took it up like he’d been doing it all along. And my mom’s home was a much more lived-in kind of clean.
As a culture historian and archivist who has sorted and registered the archive from Oslo municipality's department for housewife substitutes, and written about it, this was so much fun. When that department opened in 1946, offering help with the whole specter of household work, the unpaid labour of women was seen as essential in rebuilding the country after the war. The head of the work department had calculated how much their work was worth compared to the GDP. I don't remember the number now, but it was a lot. Still unpaid, though.
This was again such a lovely episode! Guess I'm a random housekeeper, who still needs to find a decent system. Though I do like ironing. I put on a podcast (today it was this one, very appropriate) and iron away. In a way it makes me appreciate my clothes more, I think, especially since I started sewing a couple of years ago, and learned how important and useful ironing is when sewing. Can I also just say how soothing the end music is? It gets me every time.
I aspire for my place to be a “not gross” level of clean, it’s far more manageable than spotless. I also hate vacuuming but I love my Swiffer. Swiffering all the dust off my floor is oddly satisfying.
A lot of these conversations have reminded me of one of the most helpful books ever, How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis. I'm a big skeptic about the "self-help" industry but this book was truly incredible. Very much "your house should work for you" and finding systems that support function versus perfection. Also, she wrote an ode to baskets!!
what is this book really? i saw the title and was instantly filled with rage, like somebody throw her a life vest or make a book "how to learn to swim under odious circumstances" and fuck how a house looks while drowning or something. I had A LOT of feelings but no clue what the book actually id.
Lost Boys mentioned!!!!
This could not have come at a better time, as I have spent the past two days staring at my house and dust bunny collection, trying to figure out how I got here and where to even start…
Wow I was so jazzed at the Ross Sisters reference at the 5 min mark that I almost squealed in the grocery store!
YESSSSS!!!!
Sarah that was a spot on Chris Flemming impression
Yay! SARAH and MIRANDA and PEG!
Definitely have the Aww sweetie No tee 🌈
