Marilyn's Dress with Eve Lindley and Caroline O'Donoghue
What happens when a billionaire reality tv star inserts herself into the dress and legacy of the most iconic bombshell of the 21st Century? In 1962, Marilyn Monroe commissioned fashion designer Jean Louis and freshly graduated design student Bob Mackie to create a one of a kind flesh-colored soufflé gauze gown for her appearance at a fundraiser for JFK, cooing a legendary rendition of “Happy Birthday” (Mr. President) and captivating the world from her rhinestoned sheer confection. For this episode, Caroline O’Donoghue (of the Sentimental Garbage podcast) joins us to hear Fashion and Tinseltown Correspondent Eve Lindley recount what happened when Kim Kardashian convinced the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not “Museum” to sew her into this piece of archival fashion history for the 2022 Met Gala, including the ensuing uproar from the public.

Source for that last ywa from Eve? Everything I can find online says Jayne Mansfield did stage it but Sophia Loren was genuinely uncomfortable lol
I’m bummed Eve didn’t talk about the damage the dress sustained after Kim wore it. It’s cool to reuse pieces, but not if you fucking tear them.
I was very sad to hear Sarah describe herself as "stupid" at the beginning of this episode, even in a jokey way. We are all interested in your opinions because you are intelligent and aticulate! Even if it's in jest, I find it difficult to find women's voices who aren't self-deprecating at the moment...
So psyched that you mentioned Smash!
pls do a multi part marilyn series 🙏🙏🙏
Lecture Note on William Travilla’s Costume Design for Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch. By Professor of Production and Costume Design, Savannah College of Art and Design While listening to the patron on Marlyn Dress’s, I was reminded of a notable point regarding William Travilla’s iconic white halter dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch (1955). Often perceived as a symbol of pure cinematic sensuality, the dress was, in fact, a masterclass in controlled design engineered to comply with the censorship standards of the Motion Picture Production Code (commonly known as the Hays Code). Travilla, ever conscious of the industry’s modesty restrictions, constructed the bodice of the dress with internal wiring to ensure that no unintended shadows or outlines of Monroe’s body would be visible. This reinforced structure ensured the garment remained securely in place even during the now famous subway grate scene and eliminated any risk of wardrobe malfunction or visual impropriety that could be flagged by the censors. 😌
Another compelling moment to include in the evolution of costume and public image is Cher’s unforgettable appearance at the 1986 Academy Awards. While receiving her Oscar for Moonstruck (1987) a role in which she portrayed a modest, working class Italian American widow. Cher arrived on the red carpet in what has since been canonized as the “naked dress.” Designed by Bob Mackie, the look featured a sheer black fabric embellished with sequins and an extravagant feathered headpiece, radically contrasting the character she portrayed on screen. This moment is widely recognized as a pivotal point in the evolution of red carpet fashion. It marked a clear shift in how performers began to use award show appearances to craft a public image that was distinct, often starkly so, from the characters they embodied in film. Cher’s choice to embody glamour, fantasy, and spectacle on the red carpet created a new dynamic: the actor as both performer and persona.
I don’t know if anyone else mentioned it but I believe it’s a myth that Anna Wintour approves all the outfits for the met gala.
Eve is my favorite guest!
this was a good one!
I wonder how much of the backlash against Kim has anything to do with her darker skin tone
Disappointed in this episode honestly. Unlike most episodes, I feel like the view of the karadashians wasn’t balanced. I don’t think billionaires are “good for the environment of entertainment”. This family is famous for racial appropriation largely. While it did give a more positive impression of them that I did appreciate. I wish the harmful said of this family was also given space because it’s just as important. It’s genuinely hard to compare these two woman, they have had wildly different lives and wildly different upbringings, with the only intersection being fame.
disappointed in this comment honestly
Random but Zendaya actually has worn a tribute to a Cher dress by Bob Mackie!! I think at a rock and roll fame induction. And people of course loved it.
I just listened to the april hoax episode where you briefly mentioned "a child called it" and this book is on my shelf from when I was like 8 years old and I thought it was true my whole life. Please do a book club episode on this. I need the truth.
Eve's mention of grandfather clock maintenance has activated my ever-lurking desire to mention pipe organs: I love how sometimes solving an unexpected problem when you work on a pipe organ will be a matter of, like, adding a modern janky paper clip fix alongside the last janky paper clip fix somebody added in the 1950s. These well-maintained old things really do connect us to the people of the past. 😆 Also thank you for reactivating my desire to watch Costube videos. I do love to see somebody replicate the obscure 1840s fashion plate of their dreams or whatever.
For me it would be the dress that Tina Turner performs in at Live Aid with Mick Jagger. Which brings me to a hot take of mine. Not that Marilyn wants to live forever on Rue 21 shirts and shot glasses but I wish the figure and beauty of Tina Turner was a little more yess queenified in a mainstream way that it is. I take comfort in knowing that maybe it’s just the world’s awe of her music and showmanship that keeps that from happening but as a Tina Turner fan I want to always advocate for her extraordinary physique too.
Oh my gosh the memory of TCM with my father. I resonated so hard with this. Even the age gap (my dad is also 40 years older than me). I have so many great memories of this. And I absolutely had that Audrey Hepburn phase, the Katherine Hepburn phase... all the Hepburns!
Sarah's "I remember that day on Twitter" reminds me of Contrapoints' Envy video, and also of my burning desire that one day they'll invite Natalie on this show. 🥺
Loved this episode so much. That people had strong feelings about this moment speaks to the cultural weight behind clothes. Objects are neutral and yet will always carry meaning, and garments are objects. Loved the FIT shout out! I interned in the archive once upon a time. Would pay money to wear Rudi Gernreich's Monokini.
can confirm a trip to the FIT museum is just like medical school (also it’s free to the public!!)
Dream Team Podcast! Just an added bit of info on her vault - Hugh Hefner purchased the vault next to her. Richard Poncher purchased the one above and specifically requested to be buried face down…His widow tried to sell the plot in 2009 but the deal fell through so…he’s still there.
Yikes 😬
I just threw this on, and I almost missed -style of dress
I looked up photos and... yeah Kim does not look that great in it imo. I don't understand why they wouldn't just commission a dress that matches her skin tone and measurements to give the naked effect as an homage rather than insisting on The Dress. But I tend not to understand the mystique people have about specific objects, especially celebrity objects.
Baby's first obsession with a dress: Olivia Wilde in the marchesa glitter ombre ball gown she wore to the golden globes (I think? It was during the late House MD seasons so maybe it was the Emmys. But!) imo the shoes she chose were hideous but the dress is good enough to counteract it. Also her green dress while pregnant, which I think was either marchesa or.....Versace? Valentino? It was a lovely glittering piece from one of them but nevertheless. Oh god also okay this one Christian Siriano dress Nicki Minaj wore on SNL. I thought about it for months. IDC abt Nicki but the dress is iconic
Anyway someone was obviously obsessed with Elle Saab and tulle in high school (it's me I'm the big tulle everyone talks abt!)
I know there’s a subset of rightful hate for the kardashians about being so wealthy and out of touch and questionable political allegiances but I do feel most of the mainstream hate is because culturally we hate to see women who can claim their own fame and sexuality and who aren’t able to be shoved in the corner because their MOM has their back. I really feel like the momager thing is not talked about enough bc people make fun of her for it but really who would you rather have managing you and trust to look out for your best interests than your mother who you’re actually very close to and actually have a decently good relationship with. People don’t really talk enough about how the kardashians are an unprecedented example of female familial relationships in a super interesting way I tend to admire.
Soooo good! Thanks ladies!! My dress would be the black dress Rosemary Clooney wears in White Christmas with the long gloves and the sparkly broach on her butt when she sings love you didn’t do right by me. It’s fantastic!
I loved this episode so much as you dived into one of my favorite topics: fashion history! Eve's description of why preservation of fashion is so spot on and I'd love to see Sarah continue to dive into the topic. There are SO MANY misconceptions in common knowledge about dress history that you could probably do several episodes on many topics, but I think the most egregious is the use and function of corsetry throughout history. Modern audiences see these as literal torture devices, but their use and function in women's lives paints such a picture of the everyday life of woment throughout history.
I'd also love to hear an episode on corsets. Reading Valerie Steele's work turned my whole perception of them upside down.
I always remember reading that Marilyn Monroe was so photogenic because her face was covered in tiny hairs that reflected the light, and then reading the exact opposite, that she shaved her whole face and that's why it glowed. That feels like a very Marilyn contradiction. Clothes are just fabulous objects anyway.
I would like to wear the green beetle wing Lady Macbeth dress.
I always assumed Kim chose this specific Marilyn dress because it is essentially the predecessor to the sparkly skin-tight naked dresses that Kim became so known for from about 2015 onward
Would be interested to hear how MM and KK changed the standard of beauty and also suffered the consequences of a change they couldn’t keep up with once their aesthetic started to wane
It's interesting to think about, if Marilyn hadn't died, how would the media have handled her as she inevitably showed signs of aging and wasn't the pure youthful sex symbol anymore?
I love any and all Eve guest episodes the most.
Me too! I love Eve so much!
Also hoping for a Marilyn deep dive - just tried listening to a different podcast about her and it was tuuuuurrrrrible. I only trust YWA to tell me the truth
I wish people still made bespoke everyday clothes. That would be my one lavish thing to have if money were no object. All my clothes made for me to fit my body. The dream of dreams!
Not as luxurious as having your clothes made by an expert, but this is one of the great delights of sewing yourself an item of clothing ❤️ plus it makes you respect the experts even more
listening to this while at watchmaker school - it's true that watchmakers would write notes in old clocks!! often it has been specific letters and numbers to indicate which watchmaker or workshop did repairs, and then a reference number so one can look up details in a ledger. big old clocks such as grandfather clocks have often gone through many repairs and having notes on what was done and when can be helpful, especially if it required some improvisational fixes! anyway i think the art of preserving old things is very beautiful and interesting and i enjoyed this bonus episode a lot
(there's less need to make notes inside clockwork now that workshops are finally making digital ledgers, but i've still seen some places that scratch the date into new batteries when they change them in watches, since a battery tends to last for about two years)
Thank you for this lovely gift. The easy rapport you three have lifted my soggy-winged little spirits today 🥰
Yes please, a Marilyn deep dive would be amazing!!
You Must Remember This has a good series on her!
Oh please do a Marilyn deep dive!!
I would love to wear any of Emma Stone’s costumes from Cruella, especially the red dress. I’ve watched that movie many many times mostly for the costumes.
Did I hear “not to 50”!? A princess bride reference?! I love this show more & more. Fantastically done!
Love that as well as the Righteous Gemstones Uncle Baby Billy reference
Oh god, this made me think about the first time I saw Marilyn and my parents had to tell me who she was. There was a life size statue of her with the billowing white dress in a hotel! I think I was about 7. Thinking back that was really weird…this hyper sexual image of her was everywhere, even decades later. My parents are Chinese immigrants and even they knew about it.
For archival pieces to wear, my first thought was the ruby slippers and then the green Keira Knightley dress before Sarah even said that 😂
I think the thing that drove me absolutely crazy about Kim wearing that particular Marilyn dress is she had ALREADY DONE an homage to it in 2019 - SO NOT EVEN THAT LONG BEFORE - and she looked STUNNING. I'm not a Kim fan, but she 100% pulled off the wet naked look that year and I don't know why she felt the need to poorly recreate it in Marilyn's dress. I suppose maybe wearing the original was part of the point from her POV, but it felt like pointlessly retrod ground.
I came here looking for this comment! I was curious to see if they’d mention the 2019 Mugler look because to me, that look (I feel) far more authentically and intelligently drew the parallels that Kim seemingly wanted to draw between herself and Marilyn with the 2022 Marilyn look. Like the Marilyn dress, Kim’s Mugler dress was designed specifically for her (I could be wrong about this but think it’s true), was designed to look like it cling to her body like wet fabric, and also sparked a bit of fresh controversy at the time for her choice to wear such a tight corset with the dress to really accentuate her famous figure. Who’s to say if Theri Mugler was pulling inspiration from Marilyn’s dress when designing Kim’s but I don’t know that moment in hindsight feels much more of a savvy way for Kim to make a case for herself as our era’s Marilyn than the 2022 moment, which feels much more like someone just using her wealth to play dress up and hit us over the head with the metaphor. Definitely curious what Eve’s thoughts in particular are on the Mugler piece!
Not me picturing the Met gala where Kim unwittingly exposed a looted sarcophagus like "yeah she doesn't look naked AT ALL" ... wrong archival dress lol. But MY dress would definitely be the Goblin Queen from Labyrinth
Omg I want to wear that dress too
I love Eve so much 😍🥰
I never interpreted the sophia loren picture as judgmental. my gay-o-vision made me see it as her hardcore checking jayne out.
As far as I know, Sabrina Carpenter DOES wear a wig PRECISELY not to ruin her hair
WHAT A CROSSOVER
great ep!
As a FIT alumni and vintage fashion lover, this was an amazing episode and such a lovely birthday present.
having one of the smartest people in my scope say they also don’t really understand their taxes is so validating
I just want Eve to know that Sabrina Carpenter is naturally blonde. Her stylist claims they only do highlights every few months. I have the same color and it's pretty easy and safe to get that light.
omg this was just gorgeous. This union of these women. What a delight to listen to
I was just in Palm Springs and forever Marilyn is still there! They moved it off the plinth in the middle of the road to kind of behind a bush a few meters away.
oh marilyn is laura palmer
What a lovely episode to wake up to! Love this super group ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you all so much.
what i would pay to queen out with this trio
The only reason I've considered trying to get mildly famous 😅
