Celebrity Book Club: Britney Spears with Eve Lindley, Part 2

I’m ashamed to say it took me way too many relistens to really see your genius, your almost unnerving comprehension of culture! (Ouch maybe reenacting biases against women in media while deconstructing biases about women in media??!!) You are a legend Sarah Marshall and have loosened (keep loosening) my jelly jar.

Late to the party because I was in an endless queue for the book at the library. I'm the same age as Britney and it's been so eye-opening and uncomfortable to revisit these cultural moments. As a fellow teenager, I always felt uncomfortable with the implications of her being sexualized. To the extent she appeared to be a willing participant, I know that I consciously resented her for it. Learning more now as a middle-aged mom is breaking my heart!

Just a weird little aside about daiquiris in the gulf south (I am in no way trying to excuse the drinking with a tween, but I am trying to add more context): There are drive thru frozen daiquiri shops in Mississippi and Louisiana where you can get a variety of flavors, including a White Russian. It’s definitely where high school kids start drinking here. It’s a cultural institution here , especially during parade season. Again, not trying to excuse anyone’s behavior or say that the behavior was appropriate , but I did want to shed a little light on what might be going on as a Louisianan.

Where is part 3 and 4???? Please please pretty please we need it.

I just watched Crossroads for the first time since I’ve been listening to the podcasts, and I didn’t expect it to be such an emotional roller coaster. I feel like there’s a LOT to unpack from that movie, and I can’t wait to hear you all cover it.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for the shout out to the Gen Xers. Yes, we were in university while you both were in elementary school or high school and indeed we knew a lot of things were bullshit lol. Actually, I was in university when ‘Hit Me One More Time’ came out and I thought it was the shit secretly because I was too cool to admit it. Sarah, I feel seen now whereas before I felt you were overlooking us a bit. And I was sad and not able to muster up a Gen Xer ‘whatever’! Thanks again for the amazing show.

The lyrics “hit me baby one more time” doesn’t make sense like a lot of Swedish pop group lyrics don’t fully make sense- there was a Netflix documentary that covered this! Just sounds cool, and lyrics are up for interpretation. Makes it ambiguous for the masses to enjoy

The anti-choice movement’s use of stories of “coerced abortion” to justify bans has always been mind-blowing to me. People are coerced into marriage. People are coerced into parenthood. Should we outlaw those choices as well? How on earth does it make sense to respond to one person’s perceived loss of agency by robbing everyone else of their legal right to make the same (or different) choice? It’s just asinine.

Listening to ABBA (lay all your love on me) and "a grown-up woman should never fall so easily" strikes me as one of those Swedish moments Sarah was talking about.

Also, it is SO REFRESHING to hear people talk about Britney's music and influence with admiration and respect. Long overdue, IMHO.

Read the book back in October, loving the book club. If Sarah and Eve want have a regular celebrity book club, I would not complain.

I’m somewhat older than many of you here, but I still have vivid memories of Britney coming onto the scene with “Baby..One More Time” She was a regular feature on my favourite nightly newscast, Entertainment Tonight. Somehow even back then, when everything seemed so bright and promising for her and JT, there was a part of me that thought it was destined to end badly. And the reality turns out to be even worse.

I'm gen x and can't believe that's the feedback my peers give you. OF COURSE us punk kids were screaming about this bullshit, but don't let them leave out that we were also participating in it. Sarah when I listen you you break things down now, I feel vindicated, heard and able to forgive myself 🤘🏼

OMG Eve I remember being 5 years old and also asking for the Pokemon album because I loved Pokemon and then really liking Britney Spears! My mom would convince me to do anything (put on overalls, brush my teeth, whatever) by telling me "Well Britney Spears does it!"

I remember being 8 or 9 and asking my mom to buy Baby One More Time on cassette tape. She was concerned it might be too adult for me but she did get it for me. It was my first tape and it felt like a big, grown-up thing. It really represented a first step into having my own musical tastes that diverged from my parents.

I’ve been having a really hard time in my personal life lately and hearing you two talk through this book has been a tremendous help and welcome distraction. Thank you thank you ❤️
