What brought you to join the Sly Flourish Patreon?
Hi friends!
I'm updating my poll to find out how you found Sly Flourish. If you can answer this quick poll it'll be a huge help for me to see how people find the work I do here.
What brought you to join the Sly Flourish Patreon?

Every interaction with Sky Flourish has provided me more value than whatever it cost me. I'd feel stupid not supporting the Patreon.
google search whilst trying to find some tips, then the website; then youTube
Heard you on the how not to DM podcast
return of the lazy DM Kickstarter but kickstarter is not an option ^^
LazyDM Kickstarter
It was when I first started out DM'ing with "Lost Mines" that I came across your name on Reddit. I don't remember which subreddit, but your website and books were recommended. From your website, I learned about your YouTube videos. From your YouTube videos, I learned about the Lazy DM Companion Kickstarter and backed it, grabbing the other Lazy DM books as well. I also subscribed to your newsletter and Patreon. So TLDR, I first heard about you on Reddit, your website showed me your other works, and your YouTube called me to action. Thanks for everything!
Your books and videos (especially the DM tips) got me to subscribe to the newsletter and thinking about doing it, but what flipped me from "maybe I should support the Patreon" to actually doing it was the city of Arches. It fit perfectly as a location in a campaign idea I had, and that's what made me jump from "maybe next month" to "I'm doing this now".
I've followed you for years, first on Twitter and your website. Then I bought your books and now I still do all of those and watch the Lazy D&D Talk Show every week. You've taught me so much about DMing, listening to the players and going with the flow! I even spotted you at GenCon several years ago and walked up to thank you for all you do (I think you were getting a pizza or something at the outdoor food spot).
I chose three selections with the following context: I came to Sly Flourish by either the website itself or twitter. I came to the patreon specifically because of the Lazy D&D talk show.
I'm old and get everything via podcast. You used to put the audio from your short videos on the podcast feed, but they do not appear there anymore. Would be nice to have them again if possible, thx
Found you on YouTube looking at DMing videos.
I found your Patreon when John Four and you made a series of 4 videos about heists, at least it's what my memory is saying to me.
I definitely heard about this Sly Flourish fella on the internets before, but what actually drove me to check your stuff was a phrase dropped by Steven Lumpkin on Sunfall Cycle, something along the lines of "If you are not following Sly Flourish, what are you even doing" :D And so I found your YouTube channel and binge watched a bunch of DM tip videos and after following for a while and absolutely loving your weekly Talk Shows I decided that this is 100% worth of Patreon support :)
It was many years since I had played D&D, I looked on you tube to get info about DM's and I found your show about the Lazy DM and I was hooked ever since. The book, Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master caught my attention and I first ordered it for Nook but got the old one, The Lazy Dungeon Master. after that you had it for sale at Drive Thru RPG and you went through it on You Tube and I then purchased it for guidance in becoming a lazy DM!! Thank You Mike!!! You then had a Kickstarter (I had no idea what that was all about) and you came through with your toolbox books, The Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master, The Lazy DM's Workbook and The Lazy DM's Companion (Maybe I could even throw in Grendleroot as a base to use for designing adventures). Kickstarter and Mike came through and helped me to put confidence in the use of Kickstarter for many other products as well and I am also a contributor to his Patreon which is a really sweet deal for sure!
I found your work when I was looking for help online on how to make Descent into Avernus work!
I checked 3 answers, I think your content is great and deserves support!
I Found my way to your Youtube channel, podcast and Patreon via the Itch.io page for "What Crooked Roots" by Cassi Mothwin. She had a clip of your Podcast talking about her work on the page as promotional material. I already owned Return of the Lazy DM but didn't know about this content until I found it there.
Hi Mike, I actually came to you via the Tome Show and then Deep Dive episodes before I started listening to your podcast over them.
Longtime blog reader, and have gobbled up every new format you’ve put out since about 2013. Thanks for all the good work!
I found you first with your blog post about running Dragon of Icespire Peak, then watched your 8 Steps Videos, then bought the book. And then all your videos and you started plugging the patreon at end of the videos and I went yeah definitely should do this.
It’s so long ago I can barely remember, but it was probably Google’s Godling Algorithm
I value your work on how to DM.
I had found your first book from a friend and he told me I should get a copy to help me be a DM. I been a "Fan" ever since. You see I started playing in 1981 when the TSR "Expert Set" came out, and have been playing ever since, but I never have Been a DM. Now I have your whole collection and I am reskinning an adventure and I feel great about running a game, all I have to say is KEEP UP THE OUTSTANDING WORK!!!!! - Ramon H.
I first found you through the DM's Deep Dive videos. I really liked those a lot and I'd love to see you do more of them! But the Lazy D&D Talk Show is what I watch weekly and ultimately why I decided to join the Patreon.
I actually found your blog while working on an article about Twyla Tharp. You had written a post (maybe two) about incorporating some of her ideas from the Creative Habit into DM prep. I starting digging deeper into your writing, and it actually inspired me to start gaming again. The timing was good since the 5e Player's Handbook was about 2 weeks old at the time. I wasn't aware of the other platforms you were using until you launched the Patreon. In any event, very glad you wrote those pieces on Twyla.
A friend recommended a blog you wrote on 4e boss monsters. I also used your 4e monster stat table A LOT - so thank you.
The main reason I joined the Patreon was just to support you in your endeavors. I agree with the majority of your philosophies and I think the industry is a better place with a great guy like you being there as a solid voice of reason. Keep up the good work Mike.
YouTube recommended you, now I use a browser to DL the podcast. I have interest in watching on twitch but haven't been able to line up my schedule yet.
I think Amazon recommended the Lazy Dungeon Master to me and then things are fuzzy about what led to what.
Was watching Bob world Builder who recommended you.
I bought the original lazy DM book, I regretted not buying return almost straight away and got put off, serves me right for being cheap. I got more interested when I got a recommendation for the Companion Kickstarter and recognised the name. But I joined the patreon after I started watching the twitch stream.
I joined because of the icewind dale lazy dm prep videos. That got me into the talk show, the tips, and your books. Thanks for all you do, Mike!
I chose other because I couldn't just choose one option. I love most of the work Mike does and felt like I should show my appreciation for his hard work monetarily.
I went from the books to the podcast. I joined because of City of Arches in particular.
I got the book from Amazon three? years ago and never realized there was this whole ecosystem of other great content until YouTube suggested the talk show!
I enjoyed your books, then discovered your videos when looking for tips on DMing Phandelver, but I specifically joined the Patreon as I was interested in your Patreon-only content.
I backed one of your kickstarters based on a friend who had backed it.
The flier said "Join the Cult - See the World". It was almost 50% accurate! Hoping to be allowed out of "Chamber of Sacrifice" soon - someone has done a poor job cleaning up the blood and the manacles are starting to chaffe!
If I remember correctly I found your website on Sean McGovern‘s Powerscore blog. Must have been back in 2014 when 5e took off.
Ooo powerscore!
My buddy suggested the podcast, and from there I ended up looking at the Patreon/articles, and then my buddy bought the Lazy DM books. So it started with a recommendation and the podcast!
I've been following "Sly Flourish," particularly the blog and the Lazy Dungeon Master books for several years.
I came to the empire through the DoIP one-on-one videos with Enrique. There is enough value in tip and prep articles and videos to merit support, but I still see a hole in describing how the Lazy DM method affects in-game GMing.
GM tip videos and the website to start but now I'm Lazy Talkshow fan for sure. The Sly Flourish Patreon (and the Dyson Logos) is by far the best bang for your buck, hands down.
I think the longer YouTube video(s?) demonstrating adventure prep using random tables last year pushed me over the edge to join Patreon so I could access them, but joining community and exploring the content ecosystem (Discord, Twitch, YouTube, website, books, etc) made me confident it would be a worthwhile investment. Definitely has been!
D&D Beyond comtent
I joined to meet the babes! Heard this was THE place.
Just how affordable the patreon is was my biggest factor, but I consume your content via podcast primarily - its the one I look the most forward to each week!
I'd heard of your site back in the late 4e/DND Next/early 5e days, and visited it a few times, but since I didn't do a lot of running games back then I didn't have much use for it or most other RPG sites. After I discovered and binged all of Colville's videos early in the pandemic and started running a game online, the YT algorithm started delivering me your videos (DM tips first, then the talk show, then everything else) and several months later, here we are. (The 1-on-1 game of Icespire Peak you did with Enrique are some of my favourites btw.)
The City of Arches content pushed me to become a patron.
Was going through Reddit and saw someone comment that they really liked Sly Flourish’s stuff. Saw several replies agreeing with OP so I searched for it and found the YouTube channel and have been happily watching for the last year or more. I felt that the content was great quality and when I find great content that I find myself engaging with consistently, I try to support the creator.
When i got back into D&D with 5E i watched a bunch different YouTube channels to find a good guide for relearning the game. Liked your channel the best, bought all your stuff and wanted to support you. I prefer to get fully behind one person instead just getting little bits and pieces from many.
I saw a YouTube video you did with Amy @ D&D Beyond back in August. When you told the story from reddit where the level 1 characters blew up the tavern they were supposed to meet in before the quest NPC showed up, I immediately went over and sub'd to your YouTube, bought the books, and shortly after became a Patreon.
I’d be curious on the breakdown of “Mike’s Books” between the Lazy series vs Fantastic etc vs both. It’s both for me after seeing the theory in action.
5e prep, ghosts of salt Marsh brought me to you, but the Lazy DM talk show got me to Patreon. It is my most looked forward to video of any week
It was recommended that I google "lazy DM prep" and that lead me to your website... so kinda both of those?
Bob World Builder did a video about ‘Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master’ on YouTube (where he aptly called it “The Real DMG”). Materials were so helpful I signed up for Patreon 😊
If I've been following your work multiple places, would you prefer that I check all of them? The one that I found first that got me started? Or the one that led most directly to Patreon? Right now I've gone for all of the above, but would be happy to adjust to help you get the results that will be most helpful!
Good question. You can vote for where you found me first and what drove you to join the Patreon. Thanks for absorbing all the stuff!!
The free content that you provided the whole time I had been watching your YouTube made me want to become a Patron. Your Patreon support made me want to stay!
I was specifically searching for Ghosts of Saltmarsh advice and you had begun that campaign. I started with your YouTube videos and switched to podcasts
