One-Sheet 5e

Hello Sly Flourish patron!

I like to experiment with quick guides and tools we can all use to run our game. Last week I put together One-Sheet 5e, a single page front and back version of 5e that experienced DMs could use to teach new players 5e or for anyone to have a version of 5e they could use for quick games just about anywhere.

Enjoy One-Sheet 5e and provide any feedback you'd like to give! I'm particularly interested to hear from those who have actually used it.

As always, thank you so much for your support!

I’m getting “Access Denied” when I click on the “On-sheet-5e” link… anyone else having this problem?

It's now part of Uncovered Secrets Volume 2 which you can get here: https://slyflourish_content.s3.amazonaws.com/uncovered_secrets_volume_2.pdf

Love this idea. So much so that I've gone ahead and written a Leveling Up expansion in case I ever a) run this and b) the players want to continue or just have fun leveling up in a simple way. It's too long to put in a comment lol, so I've posted it on my own blog. https://dungeonmastertips.ca/2021/10/18/expanding-on-sly-flourishs-one-sheet-5e/

Very cool! I thought about how this might expand but quickly got into "eventually we might want to just pick up the PHB". Happy to have people expand upon it though!

This is great. I find new players most frequently stumble on proficiency, especially with picking locks, disarming traps

This is just fantastic. I have nothing constructive to add, that hasnt been said already. A friend of mine recently asked me, how he could run a game for his family, who hasnt played dnd before. I had nothing to give to him, other than saying: simplify everything as much as you can. Now I can recommend this, when I get asked that question.

Love this, I agree it would be great for new players! My editing contribution: I think you meant “difficulty class” should of “difficultly class”.

Fixed! Thank you!

This is amazing! I made a quite similar document a couple of years ago to introduce new players, and have used it many times since then; you can get it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17KALriOkNjvxGwSBCUavnCtRrCLnXrRy/view?usp=sharing

It's interesting to see how our versions compare: mine is meant to be used with premade characters, so there's less focus on the classes/races but a bit more detail in the ability checks. But overall they both have the same goal of streamlining things as much as possible.

Maybe push saving throws a little higher up the sheet? At present I think they're a little under-explained, and they're such a core part of the system. Other than that, nothing constructive to add—this is really great, and I'll echo what others have said: great job simply streamlining stuff (ability scores!) in a way that really makes sense and doesn't take away from gameplay. Really solid design work!

Do you think something like a commoner statblock or something addressing the commoner might fit into this document? Think along the lines of players getting into a brawl with a villager in a tavern - or is that too DM focused information?

I’m always so intrigued about the art of simplification (especially in D&D 5e). Conveying the complexities of information that D&D has to someone with no experience with TTRPGs (i.e my wife) is something I find is an area that needs much more exploration. I particularly think you nailed the skills section best and a variant would probably fit beautifully into an extremely newbie friendly character sheet (something i’d also be interested to see from you?)!

"5. Cultist" *Rob Zombie voice* Yeah! Anyway, I adore mini or condensed versions of things, and this is fantastic. I love that you felt empowered to make little changes to streamline the system. Seriously considering printing it out, folding it up, and putting it my wallet, just in case.

DO IT! Print it out on nice copper resume paper...

Love this! In the Short Rest and Long Rest portion, should it be an “and” instead of an “or” for the rests per 24 hours?
