Video Preview: Go for a Walk!
Howdy!
Here's a preview of a fun little YouTube video I put together. Enjoy!

I love the green-screen in the video. It captures the jungle adventurer metaphor of exploring our fantasy worlds!
There is some reasonable research from Stamford that supports the idea that going for a walk helps with creative thinking (Opprezzo & Schwartz), as well as all kinds of anecdotes from history about how being alone and not thinking about much at all can lead to moments of inspiration. In addition, going for a walk is just good for us. There is a great deal of evidence that supports the claim that walking, and particularly walking in woodland areas, is particularly good for mental wellbeing, not to mention blood-pressure etc.
Thanks for the video! A good reminder to have some "passive" planning time away from the screen/notebook to ponder and let ideas come to you.
I live 20 miles from anywhere. Literally. In rural Mississippi. Drive time can be very profitable game-pondering time.
Definitely!
I often walk and listen to something. But if I start thinking about my game in depth I stop listening and just walk. I try to do it everyday, it is needed when working from home with a 6 year old doing virtual school for 9 months this past year.
Great idea.
I often think about my game when I'm riding my bike back and forth to work. Great video as always!
Thanks for the video, Mike. I've spent a lot of time walking during the pandemic. While I often walk while listening to a podcast - the Lazy DM Talk Show is a go-to, of course! - I think your advice about taking out the headphones is wise. Cutting down on input to process frees up the brain to work on answers to questions more efficiently.
I've definitely found that to be the case. Sometimes I listen to books or podcasts but I try, at least once a day, to have 30 minutes of just me walking.
