Sly Flourish Patreon Newsletter, June 2020

Behold the June 2020 newsletter for patrons of Sly Flourish! Thank you all again for your outstanding support to help fund the infrastructure behind Sly Flourish.

Fantastic Lairs Kickstarter Underway!

The Kickstarter for Fantastic Lairs has begun and already we've crossed three stretch goals! We're well on our way to including twenty lairs in the main book and already have some other stretch goals in mind. It's going to be an awesome book. If you haven't yet backed it, you can back it right here.

The Kickstarter page includes a download for two free lairs and the virtual tabletop compatible maps. I hope you'll give it a look.

Notion, New Campaign Manager Software?

Here's a sneak preview for the patrons of Sly Flourish of something I've been looking at.

One of my friends and players had recommended Notion.so to me as a way to manage D&D campaign notes. This past week I started playing with it and I think it shows a lot of promise for keeping track of campaign information. The tool is free, supports many different clients on many different platforms, and exports all of its data to csv and markdown files so you aren't locked into the platform.

I found it most useful to use Notion as a sort of Zettelkasten system, storing unique bits of campaign information in a tagged card in a Notion database. Each card has tags, some text, and a picture. Cards can include locations, NPCs, characters, villains, items, and other such atomic campaign components. I've been using specific Notion pages to show filtered views of this database for pages such as characters, NPCs, villains, and locations. Another page contains the remaining steps from Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master such as the strong start, scenes, secrets and clues, monsters, and treasure. Here are some screenshots:

I've only been using the system for a week but it shows a lot of promise. I'll likely have a video in which I go over it and an article as well if it holds up well under the stress of real game prep and real use at the table.

One of my engineers turned me on to this as a project management tool because of the Kanban stuff, I started it a pm tool for my team but then stopped (see below) but I love the UX, so now I use Notion pretty regularly for personal tasking. Note that notion is supported on mobile, web, and app which means you can do your work pretty much anywhere. Things to note - there is a limit in the number of blocks you can create on the free version, and you will hit that eventually. you can, however, create new notions and branch your content into those notions. Second thing: The information backend for Notion is stored in public facing AWS, so I wouldn't consider it particularly secure for NDA related content if you are working with people with high security requirements. last bit - you can have public parts of the server where other people can view the content, while keeping other parts private, which is great. But in order to allow editing access to others you need to get a subscription ($5 a month) which also lifts the block cap.

I signed up for Notion after seeing your tweets. I’m definitely looking forward to more details about how you use it. A video or an article sounds great!
