Announcing the 5e Artisanal Database

I started a new project consolidating and expanding a lot of the tools I've developed for 5e into one big project – the 5e Artisanal Database!

Like all of your rewards, you can find the 5eADB on your Patreon rewards page.

The 5eADB includes:

  • Four 5e rulesets including the 5.1 SRD (D&D 2014), 5.2.1 SRD (D&D 2024), Black Flag (Tales of the Valiant), and Level Up Advanced 5e.

  • Databases of spells, monsters, and magic items.

  • Tools including a dice roller, token generator, and Forge of Foes monster stat generator.

  • Random generators including NPCs, monuments, relics, locations, treasure, and more.

The 5eADB has some important design principles I think you'll appreciate:

  • Fully downloadable – you can run it on your own desktop with just a browser.

  • Self-hostable – you can run it on your own private web server.

  • Super fast – built from static HTML.

  • Mobile-friendly – works great on your phone.

  • Markdown everywhere – every page has a markdown version. The downloaded zip has markdown directories for every source so you can drop the whole folder into Obsidian if you want.

  • Completely legal – all the material within follows appropriate gaming licenses for the sources.

  • Yours forever – download it and it's yours. You don't have to trust me to keep it alive forever.

I have a lot planned for the future of the 5eADB. I'll send updates occasionally when I've made some major improvements. Some things on the horizon include:

  • Adding D&D 2024 and Black Flag spells and magic items when they're available from Open5e.

  • Updating the treasure generators so they can link to spells and magic items in the rest of the database.

  • Linking spells listed in monster stat blocks.

  • Including a stand-alone search engine to search all the material in the database.

In the meantime, enjoy! And thank you again for your support!

I love all of this. It's what pushed me over the edge to sign up for your Patreon. Is there a way that you could make the dice roller so that I can make 1s and 2s be 3s for great weapon fighting? I couldn't find one that does that.

This is freaking amazing! I am trying to migrate it over to my Obsidian vault but I am having a bit of trouble understanding the instructions in the README. I am sure you are super busy but if you could give a bit of guidance it would be much appreciated.

Hi Maui! In the README file it has the following descriptions. Can you tell me where you get hung up? Copy "md" directories to your Obsidian Vault Navigate down the folder hierarchy under the root directory to find "md" directories for any given ruleset or dataset. Copy those md directories to your Obsidian vault directory to copy over all the markdown files for those sources. Rename them so you can see what they are in your vault. Markdown and HTML files. The whole 5eADB includes markdown and HTML files for sources and datasets. The directory structure separates HTML and markdown files into separate directories for each source so users can copy the markdown directory into another application like Obsidian. Each source and dataset page includes a link to show the markdown version of that page making it easy to copy and paste into a markdown application like Obsidian or Notion. When run locally, one needs to "view source" to see the formatted markdown version or all linebreaks are stripped out. One important thing is that you can only do this on a desktop or laptop. There's not a great way to do it on mobile. Also, if you have further trouble, we can try to work it out in the Sly Flourish discord server if you're there.

I love the fact that you are making it freely downloadable, runnable, and open! I'm tired of the always online, always controlled nature of content these days that guarantees that we are just going to lose it someday when some accountants decide the content is no longer profitable. It's even worse in the video game space where so much content is simply lost to history, unplayable, unless you do so illegally and even then, not everything exists.

I'm glad you appreciate it!

Just want to chime in with the appreciation on show here. I have loved using the Monster Database and this is just on a whole other level. Quick question as I am a bit of a Luddite - after the database is downloaded, how does one run it locally through a browser?

Hi there! Unzip the file and double-click "index.html" in the root directory of the unzipped directory structure. There's also a "README.txt" file that offers more guidance.

This is insanely useful! Thank you so much for putting in the time and energy getting this off the ground At some point in the future could we have the magic items, spells unique weapons & Armour filterable by level. I have no idea if this is possible but it would be an even more "lazy" method to find and gift magic items to the right level party. Once more, what an incredible gift. Thank you!

I'm going to attempt to import this into my vault. I'm up to 40k+ notes, so this will be interesting to see if my computer can handle the new info

How did you import it into your vault?

Holy Cow, Mike! I imagine you're doing this because it helps you and the sharing with us part is almost incidental, but Holy Cow, Mike! Thanks. :-)
