55 - Pamela Has a Problem (feat. Ashleigh Stoneman) [Whit's Endless Summer #18]
Ashleigh Stoneman (The Very Worst, The Merry Worst) returns to the pod to help the lads tackle two disastrous attempts by evangelicals to cover the subject of abortion: Odyssey’s infamous lost episode “Pamela Has a Problem” and Frank Peretti’s should-have-been-lost radio drama “Tilly”. Topics include the hubris of Paul McCusker, the brain worms of Frank Peretti, and the path forward as America becomes increasingly hostile towards access to basic healthcare.

"I was a precocious little shit". I have found my people 😊 Seriously, though, I was an awful little narc with the best of intentions. Good to know I wasn't the only one.
I’m commenting on this way too late but I’m listening to Whit’s Endless Summer and as an Elder Millennial I did indeed grow up with Tilly. Thanks lads, because I’m now so freaking angry that my parents allowed me to listen to this when I was like seven years old. I was wholly cognizant of the abortion story element and understood that Tilly had been burned to death. At seven years old.
Listening to the part about Michael Tait hits a bit different in 2025 😬 sounds like they dodged a bullet...
Transgoblin from the future. There is currently a bill, that won’t pass, that what designate conception at the point of an erection. It’s a silly bill, haha, laugh. But it’s trying intertwine the idea of conception with sex so that it can make contraception illegal. Just thought I let past Ash know she was right on the money.
Great cold open
Seconded
The abortion stuff is just like arguments against trans healthcare. "No 5-year-old should be FORCED to have sex reassignment surgery!" "No baby should be thrown into an incinerator post-birth!" And then they play dumb when you ask them why they're saying this. "Well, I didn't say it happens. I just think it would be wrong. Don't you?" In the BEST of cases. Most cases they'll just say "Do your own research" and research just kinda means vibes of what the worst thing you can imagine is.
i distinctly remember getting the lost episodes collection from the library and hearing this episode. for some reason child me didnt realize in any way that adventures in odyssey was a Christian radio show, and ate that shit up
Uugggghhh my church used to have "Sanctity of Human Life Sunday" every year which meant, well, y'all know what it meant
remember when we did a choir concert at First Baptist for the crisis pregnancy center? If i remember correctly it was called "I will hold you in heaven." the place shut down a couple years ago because of embezzlement
I just subbed here bc my body is forcing me to do exposure therapy, Ty fellow GranRapsidians
