48 - 24 (feat. Yurié Collins)

Yurié Collins (@babypinkhaus) and the lads race against the clock as they dive headlong into the soupy plotting and unrelenting patriotism of Fox’s torture-palooza: 24. Topics include the rampant Islamophobia of the early 2000s, the logistics of ski mask ownership in Los Angeles, and the ticking time-bomb of imprinting Jack Bauer’s ideology onto the American psyche.

AJ saying “Je suis la jeune fille” (I am the young girl) is technically french. But it’s barely a passing grade. It’s not good french.

Fun fact; In The West Wing Aaron Sorkin has a character reference CTU as a real agency. Normally I’d assume it’s an Easter egg, but Sorkin is such a painfully incurious person, I’m not convinced he knew it’s fictional.

If you guys want to tackle a couple other shows that give this vibe these days I would recommend the 2000s Battlestar Galactica reboot (especially the fact that the only socialist is a lying, murdering, manipulative terrorist) or The Last Ship (which is about a global pandemic that one American Navy ship is trying to solve). Love the podcast by the way.

The ticking first and foremost just makes me think of Run Lola Run: https://youtu.be/uZ5xoWyJiPo

I've been replaying Mass Effect and thinking about the timing of its release, Renegade Shepard absolutely is just a direct lift of Bauer huh

How dare you AJ. Quarians have never held a seat on the galactic council, and are themselves governed by a conclave and admiralty board. Typical human behavior, really. The council made you their lapdogs, now you think the whole galaxy revolves around you. Too bad the Turians didn't wipe you all out when they had the chance Anyways, could you please smuggle some illegal weapons into the citadel for me, Commander?

You mean the BOSS Coffee guy has been in literally anything else other than the 1976 pilot of Charlie’s Angels?!? https://youtu.be/Oay8Fzi2FMk

The “gay men are national security risks because they can be blackmailed” was literally the main rationale from the McCarthy-era Lavender Scare. Yet more proof that the Cold War never ended in the deranged id of American Empire. The Communists all converted to Islam, just as an extra insult to Good Christian Americans.

Regarding gay Islamic terrorists, might I recommend Pedro Almodóvar’s “Labyrinth of Passion” (1982), featuring a young Antonio Banderas in on of his very first film roles as said gay Islamic terrorist? (His character has casual sex with and falls in love with a man who turns out to be the exiled Iranian prince who he’s supposed to kidnap. Oops!) https://youtu.be/3BP493nCWJU His first scene starts around the 20m mark: https://youtu.be/MqdKexdg1h8 (If you want subtitles you’ll have to pay for the movie, sorry.)
