46 - Sid Meier's Civilization (feat. Nate Bethea)
Nate Bethea (@inthesedeserts) joins the lads for a record-breaking third time as they build wonders and conquer the world in Sid Meier’s revolutionary empire simulator: Civilization. They discuss the gamification of climate change, the problem with “Barbarians”, and the inherent optimism of hearing a satellite go “Beep, beep, beep.”

you guys weren't kidding when you said this would eat up ALL my time because boy howdy I spent hours on the DEMOS ALONE
my laptop broke and tragically I cannot play more civ6 until it's fixed but it is a delight to relisten now that I am a Civilization Sicko. I like to gather as many horses as possible in every game.
I think the best lesson that Civ could learn from the Paradox grand strategy games is that you win by surviving a late game crisis. Thwarting nuclear annihilation, climate change, pandemics... They should treat it like surviving the age of revolutions in EU4, the Mongol invasion in CK2, or the robot uprising in Stellar (or the War in Heaven, or the Galactic Invasion)
Thank you for Yaz Minsky recommendation
Very late, but I have a thing to add about Civ Rev: It was not an iOS game, at first. The mobile version is a port, it was first made for Xbox 360, with the goal of streamlining the mechanics down to be playable on a controller.
The thing that really surprised me about Civilization was when I did Sputnik and Leonard Nimoy said, "I've invented a new type of nonce detector. Beep. Beep. Beep."
Really loved the flow of this, talking about the games mechanically, how a game progresses, and themes. Bang on the money about its positivist viewpoint. Because it was mentioned; there was a cultural victory in Civ 4, and all it entailed was getting 3 cities with Legendary Culture, just the highest tier of culture / border pop. Ultimately all you did as a result was turtle up in 3 of your early cities rushing production and try to crap out wonder after wonder.
lol yeah i (josh) went back to civ 4 again to play a few rounds after recording this one. it's easy to build one cultural powerhouse city but much harder to get production up to a point where you can consistently build wonders across multiple cities. unless you have stone and marble, that is. what a dumb, unbalanced mechanic lmao
NATE!
