228 - Alone (feat. Rax King)
Rax King (Sloppy, Low Culture Boil) joins the lads in Patagonia for adventures in catching fish and staving off the dread as they cover the third season of the History Channel’s hit reality TV show: Alone. Topics include the history of the History Channel, the appeal of Dad TV, and what it means to make a show there’s always a puma lurking right off screen.

I enjoyed this episode. The only survival show I ever saw and enjoyed was Survivorman, which is very chill and shot by one guy with no crew. Would really recommend it. I'd also recommend the games The Long Dark, and Cairn- especially Cairn, which is not only beautiful and well-written, but a very good immersive climbing sim. It might make for a good episode, too.
One of my favorite survival movies is Arctic starring Mads Mikkelsen, because the start of the movie shows the careful, conservative, painstaking daily actions that you need to survive in the wilderness for a long time. It's only later, when events force him to, that he does bigger, riskier things that put him in danger.
Sometimes I forget why people are so sensitive about going bald, until some stranger goes "WOAH you're like BALD bald" within minutes of meeting me.
That said, the barber I was seeing was super cool about it. His only comment was "I mean I'd rather you didn't, since now you'll only pay for beard trim", but once the hair was gone he was super positive and supportive. Too bad he gave it up to be a crypto broker
Seriously a great episode. I finished it the other day and am on listen number two. Rax is a real delight
Just subbed to Rax's podcast Low Culture Boil. They were a great guest, get her back in here in an appropriate amount of time please.
God I LOVED my side of the mountain and island of dolphins and into the wild growing up. I also was so into just general “running away from home” kid lit even though I had a normal n happy childhood : The mixed up files of Ms basil E FranklinWiler, Gone Away Lake, the Saturday etc.
Canadians are uncanny valley Americans.
You missed a perfect opportunity to do another Grizzly Man bit with that interstitial, with Herzog doing one of his monologues about the futility of the Canadian mans struggle to be a survivalist over the footage of a man being eaten alive by an animal.
The Korean horror movie Chawz, about a killer mutant wild boar, is what you’re looking for.
Also Razorback (1984)
The only interaction with reality survivor TV I have ever had was Total Drama Island.
Zack Skatchewan’s final apology absolutely floored me!
the fucking E33 mime music lmao
I know the track’s called “In Lumière’s Name” but in my heart it will always be “Mime Attack!”
I apologize for the behavior of all Zach's in this episode, from gamer rage Zach to terrible father Zack Saskatchewan
this is Survivorman erasure, anti-Les-Stroud bigotry
My favourite bit is the flex of the editors including footage of him getting the long shots of him walking somewhere, and then include the shot of him walking back to retrieve the camera to remind you that he's doing this on hard mode.
My wife was insistent on us watching Cast Away (I’d never seen it) and because I am a huge Alone fan, I found it to be so distractingly unrealistic (I said “he would be dead” basically every scene) that I ruined it for my wife too I think. Anyway great ep!
Fish have necks?
