215 - Columbo (feat. Donovan Eyre)
Donovan Eyre (Radio Free Tote Bag, DonoHell) and the lads throw on their trenchcoats and putter around some crime scenes as they cover the hit NBC/ABC mystery sensation: Columbo. Topics include the genius of Peter Falk, the many crimes of the Kong family, and what we can learn from watching a working class detective one more thing his way towards bringing justice to the bourgeois.

Doing a big catchup on the backlog and y’all… what I wouldn’t give for a Murder, She Wrote episode.
cheers for the shout-out on the Columbo/Romania video <3
Hey! Hell yeah, your video is an all-timer
I enjoy the phrase “howcatchem” …as opposed to “whodoneit” (Columbo being the best known contemporary example). the wiki page for “inverted detective story” is pretty fun!
I get kinda annoyed sometimes when people complain "*INSERT ART* couldn't have been made today!" Because that's not a bad thing! Art has a time and place! It's NOT SUPPOSED to be independent of the time it was made!
This one never showed up in my podcastaddict feed
I haven't seen all of Columbo, but I have seen an episode where Columbo outwits and arrests a magician, so I thought I knew where the second episode you covered was going, but no! There is a SECOND episode of Columbo where he outsmarts a magician entitled "Columbo Goes To The Guillotine", and it's the only episode I've seen where the killer attempts to outright murder Columbo himself. Oh, and it also has Columbo pull out a gun during the arrest, but when he pulls the trigger it's a gag where a little flag with the word "BANG" pops out.
i've listened to almost every episode of this podcast some of them multiple times and i am only just beginning to be able to tell the hosts' voices apart. here is my heuristic: brian sounds ... taller? (is brian tall?), AJ is annoying (endearing), and josh can be identified through process of elimination
the fucking. Swerve into cryptocurrency during the interstitial took me out
spoilers lol
In a surprising coincidence, less than a week after this episode dropped, the film clothing blog BAMF Style covered Rock Hudson's fit in an episode of "McMillan and Wife"
i was so stoked to see u cover Columbo that i caved and became a patron again
I wonder if you guys would cover Unsolved Mysteries.
Man, you didn't need to trigger my Grizzly Man trauma with that interstitial. Now I'm lamenting the death of the frontier at the hands of modernity and the strange men who no longer have any place in this world.
Oh man, Psych would be a good show to cover.
I'm so delighted by the Frisky Dingo references.
Did y'all know that both doves and pigeons belong to the zoological family Columbidae? Partially derived from the Greek Kolumbos
Anyways. How much do we need to pay for y'all to do a radio play of Columbo investigating Unicorn hunters?
Will you pleeeeeeeeeeeease do Jesus Christ superstar?!?!!
Any of y’all ever watch midsomer murders? Love a murder mystery, love hearing y’all talk abt them :)
I would kill for a TWOAPW episode on The Twilight Zone tbh. This bonus episode was excellent.
Ok so I love Columbo, when I was like 18/19 I used to come home from a night of getting high as shit after work and would watch it with my insomniac mother on Netflix or whatever the fuck, so I'm thrilled y'all are doing this episode. But also that teleplay of Waiting For Godot with Burgess Meredith and Zero Mostel sounds awesome and I need to see it now haha
I love Columbo so much but I think my favourite thing about it is the tie-in novels from the 90s where he investigates murders that lead to him solving things like (I’m not kidding) JFK’s assassination, the Manson murders and Jimmy Hoffa. Real Pepe Silvia hours but Columbo is still very much Columbo just doing his Columbo thing
My favorite Columbo theory (paraphrased from tumblr) is that he's a trickster fae, taking the form of a detective, that punishes the wicked who wouldn't otherwise get caught. Which is why phone calls always magically reach him, his pockets have whatever he needs, other cops don't immediately "recognize" him, he doesn't carry a (cold iron) gun, he doesn't give his "true" name (only asking others for theirs), and his wife is the queen of the fairies.
So in 5th grade in rural maine, we had a DARE officer called Deputy Stone who was always telling us about Columbo and wanted to show us. He was sad when he realized Columbo smokes a lot. Also check out Columbo vs Light Yagami.
His coconut gun, can fire in BURSTS, if he shoots ya, it's gonna hurt
I have family in Greensburg. Chat it might be time for an adventure
I don’t know if they ever went to space but after 9/11 they tortured terrorists for the us government I am not joking
Despite its contrivance, the Israelis have demonstrated that drone operated assassination guns can be a very real thing. That said, criminology students who had to cheat on a class in the 90s are not who I'd peg as the tech experts you'd need to do it
laufey mentioned let's go
Peter Falk's autobiography has a lot of sweet anecdotes about his life, and his journey to becoming an actor is a pretty direct reminder that it's ok if you don't have yourself figured out in your 20s or 30s, but my favorite bit about Columbo is about the dog. He was a massive dog person himself but was adamant that Columbo wasn't. "Columbo doesn't want a dog, Columbo doesn't like dogs. Columbo doesn't need a dog!" And then he saw the dog that was chosen. "What do ya know, that's Columbo's dog alright."
Frisky Dingo references in an episode about Columbo? I've found my people.
I came really close to yelling "OH SHIT DONO TIME!" on this airplane. Yay Dono!!!
I'm just gonna say this now, I'd 100% listen to a whole series of Columbo Kong
"Columbo Goes to College" is probably the best later Columbo episode. Watched the whole show with close friends only recently and I adore the show.
The minimum per performance fee for a license of Prescription: Murder is $110. This has been Nate’s Concord Corner
Fancy TV Movie Time
“mcmillan and wife” hit me with a “sonya burpo”-style vocal stim thanks for that
Thanks for the birthday gift, fellas
I feel you on hairlines AJ. I've been "the guy with curly hair" all my life but lately it's retreating up front. I'm just going to let it.
The Internet Archive has almost every episode of Ninzaburo Furuhata, the Japanese Columbo series that started in the 90s, subbed in English.
There's a clip on YouTube of Cassavettes, Falk, and Ben Gazzara on The Dick Cavett Show where they're supposed to be talking up the film Husbands but they're kind of drunk and they're all fooling around and Cavett is hating it.
Great episode-there’s a Roku channel that plays all of the mystery of the week shows including Columbo, and I’ve seen most of them. I was a little disappointed you didn’t cover one of the Patrick McGoohan episodes. He and Falk were close friends and he starred in and directed several episodes of the show.
