Fancy Movie Time #34: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
On this episode of Fancy Movie Time with Brian and A.J., the lads go to the askew circus and have their deaths prophesied by a sleepwalker as they cover Robert Wiene's 1920 horror classic: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Does the film's adherence to expressionism and impeccable production design make for a Fancy Feast? Or does its confusing framing device and lackluster score make it a Failure to Fancy? One thing's for sure: Brian does NOT care for Grease.

I'd seen Caligari on YouTube before but last year I also saw this with a lukewarm live score (a lot of very plinky plonky pizzicato strings) and it definitely made it feel a little too sleepy. I think a more ambitious, experimental score could do a lot for this one.
I was able to see this one at my local cinema a year or two ago. Good times!
Danke! Ich bin immer schick. :) Another translation for fancy is "edel" oder "elegant". "Schick" is just Germanized French "chique", as you probably knew already.
I was on holiday in Germany last year and heard someone (German) finish a sentence by saying 'done deal!!' in English and it has permanently entered my lexicon
It's way better if you sync it with Amnesiac and Kid A in that order.
I ran lights in a production of the adding machine in high school and im pretty sure we did it solely so my td could build a spinny platform
The Entertainment Center of Dr. Caligari
I know the guy who does the live Caligari score; his name is Clark Wilson and he’s fantastic. Those scores are mostly improvised; the whole thing is just a few pages of themes and cues, and the organist is expected to riff on them for the entire film. I’ve babysat the organ while he did Caligari at The Orpheum in Los Angeles, and can confirm it’s well worth your time if he’s ever in your town.
If you do a "the adding machine" episode, I'm walking directly home in a straight line
