211 - Faye Anything (feat. I Hate James Dobson) [Whit’s Endless Summer 47]

Jake from the I Hate James Dobson podcast and the lads return to Odyssey for further adventures in trust funds, marriage counseling, and the next mayor of Odyssey: Margaret Faye. Topics include the never ending Eugene and Katrina will they/won’t they, the effects of bingeing 400 episodes of AiO in an incredibly short amount of time, and the ingrained sexism at the heart of both the evangelical project and John Avery Whittaker.

I Hate James Dobson: Join therapists Jake (a former Evangelical) and Brooke (who knows almost nothing about Evangelical culture) as they read and tear apart Dobson’s works. Get ready to laugh, cry, and rip your hair out as we explore the very many reasons why I Hate James Dobson.

Okay I've never taken the time to comment on one of these but I just listened to this one and the last episode, the one where Whit was witholding Connie's wages for a trust fund? That's literally the plot of Michael Mann's THIEF. That's what makes James Caan start shooting dudes. That is her money in Whit's pocket that she earned by the fruit of her labor etc!

The headcannon of "Whit panicked and created a trust fund in the moment" makes so much sense because if Connie had access to Whit's computer in order to find the payrolls, would she not have seen the money going from her pay into the trust fund? Would these payments not also appear on her payslip if this was actually happening? Edit: Second listen-through of this episode. Tom describes the trust fund as a bonus "on top of" her wages. Would that not indicate that this fund was created using money *in addition to* her hourly wage, not taken *from* her wages?

Having just jumped around 5 different episodes to listen to all of it so far I'm so excited for the next installment of the Mulligan Saga. Also, thanks so much for the detailed credits for every episode.

North Carolina in the interstitial!! That's where I am! I too have stood upon a hilltop and been filled with eyes. College was weird.

I’m not a lawyer or anything, but presumably Connie has the grounds for a big employment lawsuit (considering she’s been working at Whit’s End for like 10 years at this point). I was under the impression that your employer was NOT allowed to pocket THE MAJORITY OF YOUR WAGES to “set aside” without telling you with a stipulation about what you can use them for (things he agrees with). Insane.

This is gonna be nonsense to everyone but Josh, but as a former niche Chinese baby I'd be happy to provide vocals or teach you guys the Chinese pronunciation

I knew immediately that was Kenneth Mars. That's the exact accent he uses as Otto in Malcolm in the Middle

Ah excellent, another Tylenol child who mainlined Odyssey. Unfortunately I’ve had a relapse, but it’s nice to know there’s hope

I want you to understand that while I do listen and enjoy the hell out of the show, I normally do it while doing other things (commuting, sitting in work, cooking, cleaning, gaming) but every single time that radio tunes out and the Interstitial starts, I find an excuse to do nothing else but sit and *listen* to just it. There's very few things in this world, and fewer still things in media, that cause me to do that. As always, bravo AJ.

Could someone more tech savy than me make an isolated file of the "I'm a Girl?!?!?" ... For a friend

When he says "the pickin's are pretty slim" that's him cleverly saying he's going to vote for Slim Pickins, who's a third-party socialist candidate in the Odyssey elections running on ratifying the ERA citywide.

These episodes have same political specificities as the Star Wars prequels
