Fancy Movie Time #30: Last Year at Marienbad (1961)
On this episode of Fancy Movie Time with Brian and A.J., the lads grab their matchbooks and make for the hotel from hell as they dive into Alain Resnais' 1961 puzzlebox: Last Year at Marienbad. Do the striking performances and impeccable atmosphere make this hallmark of the French New Wave a Fancy Feast?
Yes. Yes, they do.
Sorry for spoiling it, I literally couldn't come up with anything bad to say about this movie.
But ONE THING'S FOR SURE: Vision is DEFINITELY in the background somewhere.

When I think of Harry Morgan the first thing that comes to mind is the absolutely bonkers Rankin and Bass animated film The Flight of Dragons which should definitely be a future episode.
“The White Vision” sounds like baaaaad news
I’d recommend the 1963 version of Judex for a good approximation of a synthesis between Marienbad and The Avengers.
idk I haven't seen it since college but I kinda always framed it as "Kafka's the castle + rashomon"
But with costumes by Chanel! (I’ve seen Marienbad a lot more recently than Rashomon.)
For once Brian is correct about Canada
This is one of the few movies I actually own on Blu-Ray! And I have a paperback copy of the script, because that’s a thing you can buy, too!
