Fancy Movie Time #29: Being There (1979)

On this episode of Fancy Movie Time with Brian and A.J., the Fancy Lads groove to Also Sprach Zarathustra and save the economy as they cover Hal Ashby's 1979 Gumpfest: Being There. Do this movie's melancholy tone and memorable performances make it a Fancy Feast? Or do its static characters and moderate incoherence make it a Failure to Fancy? One thing's for sure: somebody in Maine is gonna get moidered.

I didn't expect to be called out like this, but resident maine listener here. It's all true, all of it. And I DO live less than a block from Stephen King's house, and that fence has a kill count. Literally a deer impaled themselves on it a few years ago.

A potential Fancy Movie I've encountered is the 1970 drama about right wing media and conspiracy "WUSA," starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Anthony Perkins in a fantastic seersucker suit.

When Harry Morgan first got the offer to guest on MASH before he got the Potter role, his reaction was "Are you sure? Because after being in Dragnet I'm not sure I can be funny anymore."

Not to defend* Kubrick’s LOLITA but I think it’s one of his more wildly misunderstood movies because Kubrick never adapts novels as version of the story but as vehicles for stuff he wants to talk about and in making Lolita a sexy older teen is kind of a burlesque/ aren’t you being a little hypocritical America? on old screwball comedies like Sabrina where 19 year olds have 34 year old love interests** and on how 50s America sexualizes youth and tries to pretend its chaste. Like watch that movie now and it’s bursting with horny jokes that feel real gross and it is my opinion that is 100% on purpose. Also Lolita herself is a cipher cause the Kubrick version is about Humbert vs Quilty, a man who can disguise his dark desires under wit and remove and culture and one who …cannot and also one of them is rich and famous and the other is …not. Or put another way, name a Kubrick movie not about how men hate women or hate loving women and this movie opens with a painting of a woman getting shot. Kubrick’s LOLITA is a broad comedy of manners about how Epstein shit filters down from the top*** and everyone is kind of complacent in it. End defense. *I am going to defend it **1950s age gap discourse *** There’s a good Edmund White essay on Lolita the novel in the tradition of romances and how when he first read it he could buy that Humbert had this singularly unique fixation on Lolita and that could be understood kinda…. Until he starts fantazing about fucking their daughter and granddaughters and yeah no this guy is a predatory monster - anyway he singles out the scene with the trunk in the hotel as when the book goes into a fairy tale register and I always thought the movie captured that well

I'm curious if any of you have seen the movie cold comfort farm? And if so, does it qualified as a fancy movie? Because I would adore listening to you folks talk about that movie for an hour.
