171 - Left Behind World At War
The lads dive once more into the apocalyptic mind of Jerry B. Jenkins, as they cover the unintentional finale of the Kirk Cameron Left Behind trilogy: LEFT BEHIND WORLD AT WAR. Topics include the acting bona fides of Lou Gosset Jr., the importance of colons in titles, and how strict adherence to evangelical Christian eschatology will eventually lead you to blowing out the candles of a sad bundt birthday cake in the backroom of a church ministry in Bellflower, California.

Evangelical and evangelical adjacent stuff always cracks me up because it's so transparently contemptuous of it's own audience. "Look here dumbass, this is the definition of the word pestilence, look do you know what a hospital is? It's where sick people go and sometimes they die. SICK PEOPLE - GO TO BIG BUILDING, - YOU UNDERSTAND??"
I refuse to believe that the joker is circumcised
Dad goals.
Just resigned up after a little bit of a money kerfuffle at the beginning of the year. And the first thing I hear after Joker boner being painted with a clown face. Feels good to be home.
Amazing podcast, had me rolling. And yes, in the name of all that is boner-y please do the Sorbo film. Also if you ever wanted to do the 4 'Apocalypse' films from the 90s-00s I would love it. Had to watch those as a kid in Sunday school and it still makes me laugh that Gary Busey and Mr. T are in them.
The part where you talk about Kirk Camreron not being able to say even pretend wedding vows to his pretend wife reminds me of learning that in Shakespeare, he was not allowed to show an actual wedding in a play because it was a holy sacrament. You always see right before the wedding, like in Romeo and Juliet, or in Much Ado About Nothing before they start yelling about the adultery.I have since noticed that this is usually the case even in modern TV shows, but it’s probably just because showing the actual vows takes up too much time. But they still show everyone dressed up, in church, etc. and it’s implied.
The apocalypse stuff seems kinda like the crucifixion of Jesus. You're supposed to be MAD at all the degenerates and globe homos and the anti-christ for making the apocalypse happen but it has HAS to happen? You're supposed to be MAD at the Romans (or the Jews as they sometimes say...) for killing Jesus but they COULDN'T have just gone "Hey this guy seems like a nice guy. He's got some good points. We should let him do his thing, he's cooking."
Probably the CNN Dog Tape Story Brian is referring to https://www.theguardian.com/media/2002/aug/20/alqaida.afghanistan https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Al-Qaeda-video-library-found-Chemical-agent-2780823.php
After enough time in service can Rayford be promoted from Capt. Husband into Adm. Husband?
yes
Regarding the confused pick-n-mix nature this movie has about the end of the world I think two things are relevant. Firstly, American Evangelical Christianity and the movement's allies understanding of their world and faith is fundamentally oppositional and syncretic. The "Devil" is always at your door and he takes the form of whatever property owning, usually White, American feel is the greatest threat to their stuff is. Who that is changes into a smaller number of groups as the movement widened to include Catholics in the 60s over Roe and Mormons in 2008 over Prop 8. Secondly, The thing about Evangelical Christianity is that the canon of faith is constantly being updated as new texts, explicitly clerical texts like "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards or more modern texts like "A Thief in the Night" by Jim Grant, join the popular imagination of Christians. Neither of these things are the bible. As more groups join the movement it also absorbs whatever beef and bugbears those groups have.
Ya gotta be careful when you have a boner in the Turkish consulate. Otherwise ya might get bonersawed.
Josh's point about civic religion and America first is absolutely spot on. I live right next door to a massive military installation and the entire city is a shrine to the christ-like soldier who gives his life for your, not sins, but freedom. Whatever freedom means in that particular context.

dragging myself, breathless, streaked with tears of laughter, to patreon dot com to say "the swearing part was really funny" im also glad we finally found out what this is
There are radio dramas for the rest of the series. Just saying.
I really like 'The Lost Room'. I have it on DVD
Gideon founders RPF prompt?
Great episode! I grew up evangelical pentecostal, which was bad enough. But my childhood BF had a father who had taken this armageddon stuff to the extreme. He had a basement full of supplies like a early survivalist. And he used to make his small children do drills about hoe to escape the city under cover of dark. He also would tell them about how they could never deny their faith even if someone threatened to kill them or their parents. Funny thing is my whole community was so weird I didn't even really register how odd this was.
Isn’t there a show on Netflix or Amazon about a family like this?
werewolf bar mitzvah!
This whole premise is sweaty!
*Host who's only played thief 2 voice*: getting some real thief 2 vibes
"Help Meat"
😏
Nikolai Carpathia seems so quaint now
The Sorbo film is utterly worth an episode. It's somehow better and worse. I hate how it actually entertained me through its agravating politics. Comparing the films gives you a sense of how the vibe of evangelical culture has changed. Also! The pastor character has two completely mutually exclusive backstories that clearly comes from different script drafts (both of which are the films most entertaining scenes)
After I listen to a podcast, sometimes my inner monologue sounds a bit like the hosts. This time, I'm worried that my sleep paralysis demon will take the form of Brian and AJ saying "boner".
Frank Paghetti
Frank Pasketti
Omg random Stephen Curtis Chapman hit me like a truck. He was so cool to child me. There was a time when a young Dergon's poisoned brain conceived of a super cool action movie with big SCC musical numbers, staring his stuffed animals.

"It's not a leather bar . . . It's an ocean"
"That's no leather bar"
Early contender for Father-of-the-Year
spent new years eve watching the left behind trilogy and found it really suspicious that rayford got rid of the photos of his wife and son barely a week after they "vanished" and remarries less than two years later. the only thing keeping me from believing that he was actually responsible is his decision to marry the blandest person alive
"Fuck again!" Is going right into the daily vernacular
Sorbo, Sorbo, Sorbo!
Sorbo? More like, Sore Boner This joke was a herculean reach
Boner jokes, "I'm Popeye," Kirk Cameron shit, God damn we are SO back!
You need to play the RTS next then you can really stroke out
That was an incredible Barney Gumble from (crosses fingers) AJ?
Do I "want" to see you discuss the works of Kevin Sorbo? Oh I don't "want" that, I NEED it. Rip that sentient piece of drywall apart.
Left: Behind World, at War? ... what is this?
Is this a boner?
