Fancy Movie Time #21: The Last Picture Show (1971)
On this episode of Fancy Movie Time with Brian and A.J., the Fancy Lads make their way down to Anarene, Texas for an exercise in depression as they cover Peter Bogdanivich's 1971 coming-of-rage opus: The Last Picture Show. Do the rich performances and anti-nostalgia lens make this film a Fancy Feast? Or does the unrelentingly bleak tone make it a Failure to Fancy? One thing's for sure: everybody's gotta get the heck out of Anarene, Texas.

Pauline, honey baby darling, singing in the rain is an entire movie built out of referencing and riffing on a previous generation of film like get a grip. This is why it’s bad for your brain for your job to be Have An Opinion and you have to have a new one every week.

The story on Boris Karloff being in Targets is that Karloff owed Roger Corman two shooting days from a prior project. The reason Corman was willing to let Bogdanovich direct more or less out of nowhere was that Peter was a well-established New York film critic, working in direct competition to Pauline Kael.
