🎨 Paintings Done By Your Future Parafolks

Alex here! Today’s post is all about the painting skill in Paralives.
A bit of context first. For those who remember, last summer, we organized a Hackweek within the team. This is a special week where each member of the team can choose a project of their own to develop and complete in 5 days. Well, it was the second edition of the Paralives Hackweek last week and many great projects came out of it! I can’t wait to show all the cool things we made, starting today with Sonia’s Hackweek which was all about drawing illustrations for the paintings that your Paras will be able to create in the game! This post is for Patrons only so please don’t share it, thank you!
💌 Quick note: We signed and sent all 600 postcards to Patrons on the Hero and Legend tier this week! You should receive yours within the next few weeks, depending on where you are in the world!
The whole team signing lots and lots of postcards (oops, Andrei is out of the frame, sorry)! It’s always a fun couple of hours when we do that.
Let’s get back to our main topic for this post: paintings 👩🎨
Maggie will be the Parafolk who will be trying her hands at painting today.
At first, Maggie needed some practice and went for some sketches. Chloé created an easel that will be used for Parafolks who want to paint.
After having increased her skill level, Maggie went for a more challenging project. We have created a special automated animation that makes images appear overtime while the character paints. However, the animation of characters painting with a brush is still to be created by Alice.
Lastly, Maggie went for a beautiful and watery scene with ducks which is always a great subject for any painting, if you ask me.
Maggie is all done for today and she’s pretty happy with the results! I think she’ll be hanging these around her house or she might even try to sell one of them!
Sonia created a lot more illustrations, in different shapes, sizes and styles that your Parafolks will be able to do in the game:
Many more paintings are still to be created and added to the game. Modders will easily be able to add new ones as well.
It was a really good moment for me to see all of Sonia’s paintings coming to life inside the game and I hope you will enjoy watching your own Parafolks becoming artists!

Will there also be paintings done by Paras, who aren't as good in paintings (yet)? I was thinking about more sketchy or even just really bad paintings :D

Wow These Look amazing! I cant wart to leg my Paras paint! I do paint in real life so having this in the game makes me sooo happy!!
That might be a bit difficult to create but how about letting the Parafolks paint in different styles like with their bare hands and feet or with the paintbrush in their mouths? I've seen an artist jumping around in front of their painting and throwing paint on it instead of using a paintbrush. Doing that in Paralives too would be awesome!! <3

These paintings are amazing!! It would be awesome to be able to import custom images to paint like what was available in the sims 2 at some point!
Way to go Sonia! I feel like creating different works of art is no small feat, but doing them in different styles is really really impressive. You are very talented Sonia. 🤩
Will you be able to pose to a painting, like you do with photography?
We would like to add that feature eventually! It's not there for now though

Wow, so far the paintings look amazing! I wonder if maybe it would be possible for the very skilled Para's to maybe paint wall murals? Where we could have 3 to 7 wallsection wall murals for decor? This would be absolutely awesome. Keep up the amazing work ;)
I've been wanting to add murals to the game for a while! It's not planned for the initial release but I'd love to work on adding them one day!

Love the new paintings. I can't wait to have my paras paint. Although, I hope that we can have sketch books & digital tablets too.

I would love to see paras prime their canvus first and then go into their work; so excited!!!
Amazing work, as usual! I love painting as its something I do IRL. Something that would be amazing if possible would be for paras to create a sketch while out and about and then refer back to them once at the easel. Sketching is a big part of the process for most artists.
these are GORGEOUS. i hope we may also see other art aparatus that is more familiar and accessible to most of us IRL, like paper/sketchbooks, a digital drawing pad, and a desk easel as well. After all, as an artist it always feels a little weird for the in-game art that is clearly sketches/gestures/figures or otherwise pencil or crayon based to be done on huge pricy canvases. the desk easel would simply be an interesting visual difference, and would allow to create narratives surrounding characters who cannot stand in front of a traditional easel for hours (even if the game itself does not have other means of disability rep); would look more in place in small builds where it is apparent there is not room for storing a full easel; could perhaps be portable.
The paintings are incredible!!! Hope they could draw or do coloring books as well

One of the funniest things about The Sims is when they're just starting out painting and it looks like a five year old did it. Hilarious. I hope we'll see some of that humor in new skills and painting.
I like them a lot! 👍♥️♥️ I'm also excited to see the beginner level works: stick men, rough paintwork, wonky proportions and so on. :D

While I'm mostly delighted with most of the ideas and features that the team come up with, and the pictures are lovely (as they always are), I have to confess I'm rather disappointed that there are just the generic options of small, medium and large for painting. I would have preferred a different unique slant. I would have preferred the choice of painting type - oils, charcoal, water colours, pencil, coloured pencil, markers, crayon. This seems much more realistic to me. And it could have also led to more varied gameplay too, where one genre led to another, where characters had to practice the various genres to get good at them individually, and perhaps eventually specialise in one. I always thought that the choice of size rather than painting type seemed rather...unrealistic. And this would have at least then been different to that other very limited game. While I usually find the ideas of the team wonderful, I feel that painting kind of got glossed over and simply copied from that other comparatively short-cutted, featureless game...
I think it would be great to be able to select the medium (watercolour, acrylic etc)! I think it would be difficult to implement as you‘d need real paintings of that Medium, but ist would be a great addition to the Game in the future in my opinion!
I love all of these!!! In my current legacy save my youngest sim is an artist and I was just thinking the other day what para’s paintings would look like, and I am not disappointed! Great job Sonia 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🎨

Fantastic! I love the processes of the paintings, they look awesome! I'm wondering what reference paintings could look like and if it would be possible to have parafolk pose specifically for paintings like with pictures? I think it'd be cool if different pose styles were available like group paintings or old-timey classic portrait poses?

These look fab, loving the different styles and the animation. Was wondering if it'd be possible to use different mediums? Without any coding knowledge, I'd imagine it could be pretty simple by simply labeling some art as charcoal, watercolor, oil painting and so on. And paras could focus on /train one medium (possibly through books, online tutorials/vids and art classes) and maybe even only be able to do so if they have the supplies at hand.
For now we were thinking of letting the player choose which style they want to paint and which size (large, medium and small). Choosing the medium instead of the art style of the painting could work well too, I agree
I like alot of these paintings. If my paras do that anime looking one they are definitely keeping that and hanging it up ^_^
I see the paintings have two phases, a sketch and the finished piece. I would love it if somehow we could add our paintings, I would definietly add my own sketches and drawings. It would be so amazing to see them come to life with my parafolks.

I adore the paintings! Please tell me we can choose the frame? For that countryside house at the top it would look pretty with a faded gold embellished frame, or at least with a gold frame.
We can't choose the frame yet but we might very well add that!

Painting is actually one of my FAVORITE activities in the other game. That is probably because I cannot even make a decent stick-person in real life!! ;-( I cannot wait to be able to paint in Paralives and to see my para develop their skills. These paintings are AMAZING and you should all be proud!! You did a phenomenal job, Sonia!!

I'm interested to find out more about how the progressive painting system works, and can't wait for the modding community to find a way to put your own drawings on canvases. 👀
I can't code but I love playing with mods I really look forward to messing with the modding tools. :)
I love the variety of art styles! And that you can see how the process is made. Also I like to humbly suggest that some painting are either realistic or cutesy/cartoonish cats
Oooh, so many styles ! Will there be some age-adjusted art styles ? I don't think a child could paint, um... let's say "Starry Sky", but they could get to the level of the duck. A teenager would probably love to learn how to draw manga without having the skill for an actual portrait. Elderly Paras might have more classical inspirations (or not !). And so on. It'd be nice to have the option, at least, when creating the mods :) Any way this could also be accomplished on a tablet or computer ? Not everyone has an easel nowadays.
Imagine if the child is a gifted genius in the art field. Toddler painting realistic cats and dogs because he has them as pets. A picture for mommy for mother day? A detailed portrait to the level of Monalisa. I understand your concern but your comment made me thought “but what if there’s a trait or something that gives the child the ability to create masterpieces as soon as they are able to use an easel?”

I LOVE this. It's so cool how the painting starts at a sketch level and gradually finishes. Makes it feel so much more immersive!
I absolutely love this, I hope there is a way to do digital artwork because I would love it if Parafolk can do digital on an iPad, computer, or phone. Make it where the drawing tablet is a separate thing and if you don't have it the parafolk has to use a mouse and keyboard for digital. Also, alternative things to do traditional drawing other than an easel are sketchbooks. I really do love all the paintings that the Parafolk can make, you guys are doing really good work!
Oh my goodness this is wonderful!! The portrait of Mustache Man in a ruff made me LOL! All of these artworks are so beautiful. I especially love the house with the clouds and moon. I hope that I will somehow, someday be able to hang that in my own home! Amazing work Sonia and thank you so much for sharing Alex!!!
This is absolutely amazing! I have always loved the concept of painting in the game and being able to have "special" paintings around that you can't just buy from the store! Artistry is a thing I go for alot with my sims characters so this is extremely welcomed! Will "anyone" be able to put in their own type of painting OR do we have to know how to mod first? AND will you guys be making a "course" or something similar for us to be able to learn how to? :)
Glad you like it!! It should be pretty easy for someone who doesn't know modding to add new paintings using the modding tools. We will probably have different step by step guides to do various common things like this!

I love the variety of styles. I also look forward to the ability to mod in more paintings. I love having hand made art in a home so I'd love to mimic this in Paralives.
I'm in love. I would love to see different ways of drawing, like sketchbooks or tablets... But I'm absolutely in love with this anyways

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that the sketch of the painting appears first and each color gradually after that! You guys are geniuses! I love all the paintings, but the two with ducks are superior in my opinion. Please add more ducks. 🦆 I do have a question. Will the gradual painting effect work the same on custom paintings?
Hehehe, glad you like our ducks! Yes, the gradual painting effect will work the same on custom paintings. It is an automated animation made through shader code that modders will be able to use as well

Thank you! Adding a sculpture skill is not planned for now but it could be a great addition for after the release!
