Bringing Food to our Parafolks’ Plates
Hello everyone! Léa and Chloé here.
We have been working on something exciting behind the scenes. While we have already tackled the overall environments and vegetation’s art styles, there was still something we had yet to test out: food! We had a lot of fun working on it, so we are excited to show our work to you all today.
For the past few weeks, we have been defining the style for our food. We selected a few meals in order to test out a few things. We needed to first see how we could make the assets look tasty with the limited resolution we have available, but we also had to see how we would be representing different food textures.
This family couldn’t decide what to eat for dinner, so they all cooked different meals!
We decided to try creating a Japanese curry dish to test how we would draw rice and thick stew-like textures. Making the rice readable from a distance and not look like a white ball was quite tricky! No pain, no grain.
Creating ramen was a must have for us; a lot of team members really enjoy ramen. We got to see how we can draw noodles soaked in broth and meat slices. Yummy!
When in doubt, just put sauce on spaghettis; the pastabilities are endless! This plate needed a complex hand drawn texture, but thankfully we’re going to be able to reuse it for different pasta recipes.
A good old club sandwich was a great way to see how we could make a triangle interesting! We wanted our sandwich to be imperfect, thick and appetizing. Many sandwiches have been eaten during this test, for research purposes, of course.
After eating a heavy meal, what’s better than some healthy fruits? This fruit bowl may end up being more decorative than an actual food item in the game, but it helped outline how different fruits should look like in meals for the future.
A French romantic date out in the garden! We even thought about the fizzy expensive drink. Like with the club sandwich, we didn’t want the cake slices to just be sharp triangles, so we instead opted for a more organic feel with some slight imperfections.
Some dream of cake, others bake it happen!

Honestly I just want the food to look ok and have a little variety. *IE: No slop on a plate with no indication whatsoever of what it even is* If you can do better than that I'll be happy. :)
will we be able to buy ingredients at the grocery store? this is super important to me! Sims 3 only had a rabbit hole of it :(
Will the portion size decrease over time as the food is being eaten?
If it helps, instead of the rice and curry being in a bowl you can serve it almost like the spaghetti - on a plate but the noodles are rice and the sauce is curry. I'm indian and typically eat my rice on a plate with curry on top, but one of my siblings has it on the side not touching. Or maybe give more shadow to the rice in the bowl - from far away I would completely think the rice is a white blob

I would love to see utensils or meal preferences with different types of foods! For the ramen, they can have chopsticks instead of a fork or other broths to use for the recipe, or have a meatless option and add as much or as little to the ramen as possible. Maybe a fortune cookie with a fortune in it would be excellent! Maybe have it tied to luck for a day or something. As always, you guys keep making me happy with each post!

the hand drawn accents really tie it to the rest of the style, and it all looks so yummy (especially the ramen)! excited to see more foods~~ lots of veg options would be nice as i tend to avoid meat dishes in games
Can we have pizza and wings please? Later if we are able to put the recipe on the menu in our restaurant I would like to have that on the menu for my paras to enjoy.
Not sure if anyone noticed the different color of dinnerware (bowl and cup) being different colors, I wonder if this is going to be a possible feature we can customize for para households? :) I also hope that recipes can be shared between paras who haven't learned or unlocked them themselves yet. I think all recipes should be accessible but if the para is a novice it has the consequence of not turning out great vs a para who's a more seasoned cook.
Having an actual usable fruit bowl would be extra platinum though T^T

Its really cute but something about the style doenst fully fit the paralives style/feel to me. And i agree that the plates are too blocky.

Besides the champagne is there going to be other alcoholic drinks such as beer or liquor?
I don't like the plates - there are a lot of little edges. But I asume, that it is about the food and the plates will come later. Food looks great.
You need a lot of polygons to model rounds objects, that's why you can often see those little edges in games. It's for optimization reasons.
Ohhh the details in these Plates is amazing! The strawberies and the crunchy looking bread of the sandwiches! this looks all so great

You may have mentioned this already, but vegetarian and vegan sims, will they actively avoid meat/ animal products, or still eat them and get a nasty moodlet? In sims 3 for example vegetarian sims would not have the option to eat meat meals, but in sims 4 they do and have a nasty moodlet associated with it. I'd prefer it if they wouldn't eat it at all. ps, these look amazing!
I would love to be able to make waffles, cupcakes and different cakes, but also imperfect ones like for example if kids in the game bake something! ❤️

Mashed potatoes with gravy! Or maybe even scalloped potatoes! Bubble tea would also be really cool, even though that's not exactly a food.

I was going to grumble slightly at the plates, but after seeing the rest... I don't care. The plates are completely blown out of the water by the rest to the point I have no complaints at all. I can't wait until this is released!
These look great! So nicely done! I would love to see, burger and fries, steak & potatoes, salmon and veggies. Then just side dishes for snacks, like, bowl of parm fries, bowl of chips, bowl of nuts, yogurt, fruit bowl, fruit smoothie, protein shake, etc.
absolutely love the shape of the sandwich in particular. very pleasing, very good use of colors. if i had to pick one food i want, that i feel is my staple in sim games, its the salad. its quick to make and healthy! perhaps a cranberry walnut salad? the cooking skill is my favorite, i've made so many gardener-cook sims in my life. an expansion of pastries would also be much loved.
Normally stylized food looks so flat, this looks so appetizing, love this style you're going for 😭

Thanks for showing us this. Food is such a fun detail in games. Any game where I can feed my character, I do it. I love making my sims cook and eat. I think you did a great job of making them stylized yet appetizing. I love all the details you've added like defining some of the toppings of the ramen, and making the sandwiches look like they are layered. Great job! I hope these dishes stay in the game if possible.
These dishes look absolutely wonderful - fabulous attention to detail :-)). Just one point, though. I live in South Korea where ramen is very popular - after school the convenience stores are packed with Middle Schoolers sitting in the windows all eating ramen :-))). But absolutely NO-ONE eats it with a fork. And I doubt that anyone in any Asian country would ever eat ramen or any food, other than western food, with a fork. You really need chopsticks if you're going to represent any Asian food (and of course Asian food should be represented). The fork really stands out as very weird with the ramen and would do for any Asian food, even Gimbap or Sushi. I know it's more animation, but it's kind of essential for representation, really. Asian people need chopsticks. I've used a fork once in 5 years - and that was at a 'western food' restaurant. PS: As for South Korea, the most obvious inclusion would be Bibimbap as a national dish. But there is also Miyuk Guk (seaweed soup) that is very important here. It's traditional because this is a very healthy soup that mothers traditionally eat every day for a month or so after giving birth - it's packed with iron, of course. The tradition continues for the child, who eats Miyuk Guk every birthday in recognition of his/her mother. Hence it's often called "Birthday soup".
As a North American, I also usually use chopsticks while eating ramen or similar dishes, though I missed their lack in the place setting here. I think an Asian style soup spoon (not sure what it's called) would also be a good inclusion.
When I think about food options I'd like to see in the game, I cannot help but think how to categorize them to make it easier to keep track of them, but there are just so many ways to do so! For instance: -By meal (Breakfast (sweet and savory); Lunch; Coffee/Tea time; Dinner; Dessert; Snacks) -By origin (North American; Latin American; Caribbean; Mediterranean; Eastern European; Middle Eastern; Asian, etc) -By cooking technique (Pan-fried, deep fried, grilled, baked, etc) -By main ingredient (meat, chicken, egg, potato, veggies, pasta, etc) -By food category (soup, salad, stew, BBQ, etc)
I absolutely LOVE the style of the food! They look so fitting to the environment and also so yummy! Well done :)

I think in some cases making the rice look like a white ball would actually be a better choice? Sticky rice can look like that. While I love your curry, the rice looks a little...mashed potatoey?
Personally I like the way the edges of the rice are tinted similar to the curry like it's soaking up the broth. The edge is less defined than the center texture though which may be where the potato-y look comes from.

I think it would be really interesting if the fruit bowl worked like a chest or coffee maker and paras could interact with it and take different fruits.
This all looks incredible!!! I especially love the extra little bit of shape on the sandwiches, it makes them look that much more real/natural
They look beautiful! Personally, I'd be happy with the "X country's national dish" kind of dishes. That's the kind of stuff I'd like to see in a game, because that's the kind of food I try to eat on a holiday or try to recreate in my kitchen.
That cake is ADORABLE. This all looks great!! I think pizza is a definite. But also pastries, soup, holiday foods (Turkey!), various salads, snack items like a candy bar. It’d also be cool to have your para make a protein shake, or maybe a crockpot meal that cooks throughout the day.
This is so cool! It makes me happy to see so many different cultures represented here! I would love to see some Jewish cultural dishes like matzo ball soup, potato latkes, and challah!! (: You are all such great artists and visionaries!!

Amazing work as always! 😍 even though you see the flaws close up it all STILL looks so yummy! You guys are all great artists! As a foody I would love to see all different kinda of foods from different cultures! But as a swede I feel there needs to be some dishes representing typical Swedish food other than meatballs. We are always overlooked or made fun of in always all kinds of media. 😅🙃 Food like grilled salmon with potatoes, meatloaf, falukorv and milk stewed macaroni, swedish pancakes and some desserts like Princess cake, semla and for the savory tastebuds smörgåstårta. 🇸🇪 OH, and don't forget the iconic swedish pizza flavour = chicken, peanut, curry, banana. Of course we swedes are just 9 mil People of all the People in the world so I know there's no way all of these dishes will make it into the game 😆 but it would be so fun to see atleast one main dish and one dessert in the game!
Video game food is the best! I'm very much looking forward to trying to recreate some of these in my IRL kitchen once the game is out. An awesome bonus would be if the team creates some new creative recipes for folks to try to replicate themselves! I find that simulation games can offer great motivation for learning how to level up our own cooking skills.

I love how delicious the food looks. In so manny other games the food textures and the style of the game seem like two different things. But here they blend beautifully, can't wait to see how the whole game looks when it is done :D

I love how detailed all of the food is. From the different angles of the strawberries to the little stray grains of rice in the curry to the dark marks on the bananas. Great job!
I absolutely ADORE the idea of imperfections to make things look perfectly real. I'm not gonna lie, some of these textures reminded me of how delicious a lot of dishes looked in That Other Game™ 2 (...at least to me), but with improved graphics of course. It's that sense of detail that I'm loving with the art style ! The glistening of the curry, for instance, makes a world of difference between "brown stuff" and "brown sauce". But I'm also very interested in what you said about the spaghetti, in that you basically have created a texture for the pasta and a separate texture for the sauce, which can lead to more pasta types (pestoooo ! sorry, I'm hungry, it's almost dinner here in France) in the future. That's interesting because, although it's not like we'll be customizing dishes the same way we customize furniture or clothes, evidently this opens possibilities for at least combining recipes. As someone who spends a lot of time watching cooking videos and food tours, and has played a lot of Delicious cooking games, I'm looking forward to learning more about the cooking system now that dishes have been designed. It'd be so interesting if our Paras could learn not just one recipe (like spaghetti bolognese) but have a more modular system (learning to cook pasta, then learning different sauces like bolognese, pesto, carbonara, etc., to keep this example). There would still be a set number of recipes (at least in vanilla ! mods would add even more), but you could really expand possibilities for the player. That way if I play a student Para who doesn't have a lot of money, they can eat pork ramen one night, then chicken ramen the next night and not be fed up just yet ! Or maybe have my self-Para eat the same exact salad night after night for 3 months and absolutely refuse to eat anything else. Anyway, now I'm curious how we'll get these dishes in the game !

I love the food :) and the cake looks soo good! I honestly hope to see more snacks and drinks like boba tea, iced drinks in glasses (i know this is probably asking a lot but the ice floating in drinks would be so cool or fizzy bubbles in soda), drinks in those 'starbucks' kind of takeaway cups,maltshop/diner drinks.
Oh what about juice boxes! Even as a adult I love to drink juice boxes, I would love to see that as a beverage for adults and kids😁

Food is one of my favourite things in a life sim so I loved seeing this! It would be interesting if the fruit bowl was interactive, perhaps it could be a simple option of “Grab fruit” and a Para gets a random fruit from it to eat?
Was thinking this too! Would be great if they could 'grab food' and 'eat food', as in take it with them to school/work/somewhere to eat later or eat it straight from the bowl.
This is awesome! But I expected to get an update about live mode today. Gotta wait for another week I guess

For other types of foods, I had a lot of ideas so bare with me haha -bibimpap -american and italian style pizza -foccaccia -vietnamese rice paper rolls -spanish seafood paella -ratatouille -ravioli(could be a more advanced recipe with a pasta machine) -french onion soup -mexican chicken mole -pretzels -pumpkin and cherry pie -chai and matcha latte -if there is alcohol besides wine, they could learn to make drinks too like margarita or mojitos🤩

oh wow, these turned out great!! i especially love the fruit bowl, and the textures of the rice and the layers on the sandwich - this is superb! also - i don't know if the drinks are finished like this, but i absolutely adore them. the little scribble lines on top of juice and coffee kinda give me a lot of joy 🥰 one thing though - are you gonna make chopsticks? the ramen looks great, but the knife and fork beside it look a little silly 😄

They all look incredibly yummy. The only thing that's bothering me a little is that the ramen bowl feels like it's a lot bigger than the rest of the dishes, almost like it's supposed to be a big bowl with food for the entire table instead of a single portion.
