👋Together Cards: Our Progress on Social Gameplay Features in Paralives

Hi, it’s Alex!

I’m here to talk about our progress on a crucial part of the game: social interactions! As you may remember, it works through what we call Together Cards which are choices offered to the player to drive the conversation in the desired direction. It was first explained in this post and Jérémie then shared more insights in this other post.

🔐As usual, today’s post is for Patrons only so please don’t share it, thanks!

You can see the Together Cards in action in our 7-minute long gameplay video from last year.

⭐ General Improvements to Social Interactions

Recently we have brought two main improvements to the Together Cards.

First, instead of only choosing one of 3 offered cards each time, the player will now have a bit more options on what happens in the conversation as every character will have 2 to 3 cards of things they can say or bring to the conversation. This also solved an issue we had where it was hard to select only 3 cards to offer to the player if the group had a lot of people in it.

When interacting in a group, every hour, the player can pick one Together Card that will be said by a specific character (each column represents the cards that a specific character can use). The offered cards are randomized based on the context, the relationship status, and more. The two characters on the right don’t have any cards because they are not household members that the player controls.

Secondly, we have added a lot more together cards revolving around the personality of your character. There are unique cards for Paras with the Overjoyed vibe trait or for Paras with the Music talent trait, for instance. Of course, social traits will also have a big impact on the kind of things a character can do and say during a conversation.

Some examples of cards tied to specific personality traits. Read more on personalities here and here.

🎹 Join Friends to Work on Your Skills

As you may already know, in Paralives, any interaction available in live mode can be done alone or in a group. Leveling up your skills is no exception. The great thing with Together Cards is that if you are, let’s say, discussing around the piano and working on that skill together, the cards offered each hour are more likely to be about the piano. Selecting one of these cards could inspire your Paras or give them a learning speed boost in the piano skill.

Working on skills as a group will be a great way to reach high skill levels a bit faster, as well as making friends on the way!

💖 Romancing Parafolks

I have to admit it: my favorite part of socializing in life simulation games is romancing characters! One of the improvements we’ve done to our Together Cards lately is to allow two people to flirt together even though they are part of a larger group.

Something is going on between one of my Paras and this new stranger we just met! I hope this won’t make my other Paras jealous or something…

We added more romance cards that will be different based on the personality of your characters. Furthermore, we also created some extra rules that will make it more difficult for two people with opposite personality traits to successfully flirt with each other. For example, an Overjoyed character will have a harder time flirting with a Grumpy Para than if they had a different vibe. We aim to build upon that to have a romance compatibility system.

Here, I’m mouse-hovering a card to see the breakdown of why the success chances are 42%. When romancing people, many factors are taken into account to know whether it will work out or not. For instance, if you know the person well or if you first set a friendly or funny atmosphere in the group, Parafolks are more likely to get seduced.

🤚 Event Cards

Another thing we’ve done is that we sometimes offer event Together Cards to the players based on what’s happening in the conversation. For example, if Paras are having a good time telling jokes and laughing, they might be offered to level up their Friend relationship label, or if the romance is high between two characters, an event card might make it official that the characters are now interested in each other.

On the right, an example of an event card that upgrades the Friend relationship labels of people in the group.

We’d like to expand on that and test adding more event cards that are more than just new relationship labels upgrades. One idea would be, for instance, an event card that lets you select a secret crush for one of your characters. Another idea would be a card that makes two people in the group start to argue about something that happened earlier.

➡️ More Together Cards Ideas To Be Tested

There are many, many more gameplay elements we will be able to experiment with as we keep adding new Together Cards before and after the initial Early Access release of the game. Here are some of them, to share just a few:

🍫 Share snack: If you have the personality trait “Good at taking care of others” and there’s someone in the group who is hungry, you could use this card to relieve their Hunger need a bit.

🧑‍⚕️ Examine symptoms: If your character is a nurse or a doctor and someone in the conversation has a virus, for instance, you could pick this card to check on their symptoms.

💼 Exchange about work: If someone in the group works in the same field as your character, you could use this card to have a small chance of gaining a job upgrade point.

🤝 Friendly introduction: If you have the trait “Good at making friends” when meeting strangers, you could use this card to have a 50% chance to unlock the “Friend” relationship label right away.

🔥 Talk about the fire: If a group of people just went through a dramatic event like a fire, they could pick this card to talk about it and get a bit of comfort, or maybe even become friends faster because of the difficult events that had to go through together.

I hope you liked today’s post. Please share your feedback below and have a great weekend!

i love the info about the success rates of interaction! its so fun

K
Kayleigh · March 28, 2025

Personally I would not want to see the calculation for how great the chance of success for an interaction is! It's more fun to have to learn what factors can influence it or just take your chances, rather than having it spelled out too clearly for you!

K
Kayleigh · March 28, 2025

I do want to add though, I LOVE how all the interactions will be different based on the situation, their personality, their relationship! That helps it from being too overwhelming, having a million essentially meaningless option to choose from that feel disconnected from everything. I prefer social interactions to be either a) deliberately vague so I can put my own imagination into it (just plain Talk to them) or b) specific in a way that feels tailored and unique to these characters and situation.

Rafael · March 24, 2025

The UI looks pretty confusing, but I know it's a prototype. One suggestion would be to have a stack of cards behind the character's photo, so when you click on the photo, the cards would appear on top.

p
pekeniax · March 14, 2025

I think this UI is kind of confusing 🤔 I'm not sure which paras are from this household and which cards are for/from which para or if all cards are always for/from the selected para. Maybe the household members could have a different background color from the other paras or the other paras' pictures could be in another place on the screen since the different picture's sizes might not be enough to spot the difference between each group. If the cards are all for/from one para at a time, then there's no problem. If the cards are for/from different paras at the same time, then they need to be displayed differently IMO since they look kind of confusing this way. Last thing, I also agree with other comments saying the UI is a little too big and gets in the way, but I'm guessing this will be something we can change in the settings (?). I really like the cards system, but this post was really confusing for me😅

It's so cool! It's great to have so many options. But I think the UI can be smaller so that it doesn't cover the gameplay screen. I'm looking forward to it and I'll always be rooting for you.

NHFoodie · March 7, 2025

This is the second time I’ve seen “energic” used as a way to describe a Para’s vibe and I wanted to call attention to it for proofreading purposes. It should be “energetic” 🫶🏻

z
ziggy:) · March 7, 2025

now I'm wondering if paras could get a together card that asks if they are at the same relationship level with another para. this could confirm friendship or romantic feelings. this could be interesting storytelling too if some para would lie about this. maybe they don't want to hurt someone's feelings so they say they are also friends, or they are not ready for a relationship, so they lie about having romantic feelings. maybe a success chance increases when a player confirms the relationship level before one para asks to date another or declare they are best friends.

The share a snack interaction is AWESOME. I can't tell you how many times I tried having a conversation with someone in a simulation game only for them to be starving to death and unable to participate T^T

I think the cards should overlap more and be tucked under each para’s profile picture, and when you click on their deck of cards, it spreads upwards so that the player can read each card. This way players understand the each column corresponds to the para below.

N
Nina · March 3, 2025

Interesting. Lots of potential here. The UI needs work though! I never would have guessed that each column corresponds to the Para portrait below it -- they don't look visually connected.

What happens when two Paras who are in a relationship are having an intimated conversation and then a third Para joins? How will that affect the current conversation, as well as the Paras? For skill building, will the (in this case) piano skill for both the player and the observer be affected by the together cards? Like if the person playing the piano receives a skill boost from a card, will the observer also gain a skill boost in piano? However the mechanics work, I absolutely love the together/event cards feature. It makes Paralives feel like an actual game to be played and strategized and not simply virtual dolls to be micromanaged.

J
Jérémie Tessier · March 3, 2025

The third para might get uncomfortable or just kill the mood! It's still something we have to lock in :) As for the piano question, it depends if the piano player is sharing their knowledge (so only observers benefit) or if everyone is discussing tips and tricks together (in which case everyone benefits), it'll really depend on the cards you get!

J

If the people are talking together you'll pick one card for the whole group every hour, if your family members are spread around in different groups you'll pick one card per group! Thank you for the question!

ladyteruki · February 28, 2025

Hi Alex, thank you so much for this new post ! Together Cards (and potentially Want Offers) are my favorite game mechanics about Paralives so far. As someone who is primarily a builder, that's quite the testament that I'm considering modding Together Cards (...and potentially Want Offers) if I can ! Especially now that I see the "talk about fire" example you mention at the end of the post. So this new update on the Together Cards (are we ready to call them TCs yet ?) is veeery interesting !!! If only on a visual level : the vertical display makes it more clear which Para is facing a choice (which is an improvement even if the player has only one Para in the conversation, but other Paras in the household, to avoid making it look like the Together Card affects everyone). I also love the way the Together Cards are not fully straight, really like being dealt cards in a physical game. Now, about the gameplay itself. Right off the bat, something I'm noticing in the examples provided is that we don't have as many icons or data showing the consequences ahead of making the choice ; but on the other hand, later you say that by hovering on a card we can see the exact statistical chances of success and their reasons, so I'm not sure I understand how this will work. I really like the idea of being told one of the consequences of each Together Card (...although I'm not opposed to a Together Card having more than one effect, and not disclosing them all !), because it incentivizes strategies, which is important when Together Cards only come up once an hour and will be context-aware, meaning the chances of getting the same Together Card twice will be quite small (especially as more are added !). Plus, it fits the idea that Paraplayers get to write the stories they want, at least within the bounds of what Together Cards are offered to them ; keeping that control over events is important. So I'm really wondering how much information we have here ; this post gives mixed signals, or maybe I'm just dumb. I really like how Together Cards work if you have several player-controlled Paras in the same conversation ; it's a great addition because it means two Paras can absolutely have very different reactions to the same situation ! In the same conversation, relationships can evolve in opposite directions, and this is very exciting. However, when it comes to the Event Card, I'm wondering : is the "Friend +1" offered to BOTH of the player-controlled Paras in this conversation, regardless of their individual choices (past or present) ? I say this because, if you have 2 Paras engaged in a conversation with NPC, but only 1 Para is behaving in a friendly manner, would both be offered to improve the friendship, or would the Event Card not be offered at all ? Reading this post, an additional thing I'm wondering is how it'll work with different lifestages. So far I believe we've only seen Together Cards for interactions between adults. What happens when there's a group and one of them is a child ? Actually, are age-appropriate cards planned, with different life stages having their own set of Together Cards ? A child would likely not form friendships with adults based on work, for instance ; and offering job upgrades or opportunities would fall on death ears on them. Or the considered "share snack" interaction, for instance, is very cute, but it feels like it would be more likely to happen if a child in the group is hungry than an adult (while still possible for an adult). Obviously a lot of Together Cards don't have to be age specific (like "talk about food" which is obviously very universal), but not everything is of interest for every lifestage. Actually, do Paras have toddler-specific topic of conversation planned for when adults or elders talk with their descendants ? That would be adorable to have the Parli equivalent of baby talk XD This is something I'd be interested to know. However I might be posting this comment a bit too late for it to be answered XD

Wow, you have some interesting questions. Let's see if the team can answer any of them :) I only have a doubt related to the UX: I'm not sure if the columns are clear enough to indicate to whom is the Card related. I've seen some readers confused by that.

T
TeaAddict · February 28, 2025

I have to be honest, I don't really get it 😂🙈 I think it's a me issue because I can't remember all of the other posts about socializing. But like, is this the only way the paras socialise or is there also clicking on the other paras to socialise as a menu? Like we initiate chatting and then the cards pop up? Why once an hour? Could it be more often but a little indicator pop up over a Para's portrait (like three dots) when new cards are available so it's up to us when we click on them and choose to guide the conversation somehow? - it feels like this would be fairly limiting somehow? Is there card queueing? How does it work in a group setting, are we picking one for each Para all at once and then it plays for another hour or will it be staggered per Para? I probably just need to see it more in action and play with it myself but right now I'm more confused by this than exciting tbh 🤷🏼‍♀️🤔

I made a suggestion like a year ago that was really similar to the ideas you guys have for expanding the event/together cards. I don’t know if my suggestion had any direct influence at all but it’s so cool to see that you guys are heading in that direction!!

J
Jérémie Tessier · February 28, 2025

Hehe, we arrived to this new iteration of the system through some playtesting and brainstorming, but I'm happy to hear you say that!

R
Ryn · February 28, 2025

This is looking great! I love the direction you're going in and your suggestions for more event cards (such as two people in a group arguing) are brilliant! I really like the idea that each active para has different potential responses based on their personalities and experiences. I'm not quite sure how to explain this clearly, but it does make me wonder whether there could be an option to allow one of the non-household paras to select a response based on their personalities and experiences. I think this could really help bring some 'randomness' into the game, for those who like that! Maybe a little button next to the together cards saying "Allow Maggie to direct the conversation/ choose the next together card". So you would effectively have 3 choices: you could choose a together card from one of your active paras, decide not to choose a together card at all or allow one of the non-household paras to direct the conversation based on their personality/ experiences. I don't know if that makes sense! But honestly, the star of the show is the idea that you can 'target' one para in a group, as you showed with the romance option. I know you hinted at it, but will the other paras in a group respond to 'targeted' interactions? For example, if Lisa flirts with Maggie, will the other paras in the group feel jealous or awkard? If the other paras do respond emotionally, I honestly feel like this could be a bit of a gamechanger. Imagine if this mechanism could be adapted to different interactions! Maybe two paras with a high friend level could share an inside joke, making the others in the group feel awkward and left out. Maybe a married couple could shift into an argument (that really should be had in private!) and the rest of the group feel very uncomfortable. Perhaps one para starts picking on/ mocking another para in the group and the others have to decide how to respond. There are so many storytelling opportunities! I'd also be really curious about whether certain together cards could be 'targeted' at several paras in the group. So for example, maybe Lisa could share an inside joke with two paras in the group, leaving Maggie feeling left out. I don't know whether these suggestions are actually feasible, but it's all very exciting either way!

M
Madegeeky · February 28, 2025

How will the cards work if we're doing a more hand off approach? With the para pick one themselves?

J
Jérémie Tessier · February 28, 2025

At the moment it's only the players that can pick these cards (a bit like job upgrades or other character improvements), but when we focus more on Para autonomy we'll see if it makes sense to have something like that. On the other hand, we don't want the game to play itself too much (especially if some cards can start or end relationships) so it'll be some more thinking in the future! Thank you for the question!

N

I still don't really know how I feel about the Together Cards because it's such a different system but it's growing on me and I am keen to test it! B
BonaparteBardithion . · February 28, 2025

The downside of this approach is that there's less player control involved in where the conversation goes, especially since they only pop up once an hour. That does make it a little more organic but might make it harder to direct scenes for someone trying to play out a particular storyline for a photoshoot and such. Maybe there could be a cheat that gives access to the full library of Together Cards or actions for those situations.

Amazing update as always! Is there a way for the game to know how much time paras spend together even if together cards aren't selected for some reason. I'm thinking if you have paras that play piano together, but the player doesn't level up their relationship will game still recognize that they play piano together a lot. And could you possibly apply time spent later like job points. Maybe it could help progress the relationship faster once deeper conversations start?

Wonderful post, as always. I am loving getting more gameplay updates. I have a few questions: will paras build relationships autonomously, perhaps when they are in an unplayed household? Will active household conversations happen without my input or will I have to micromanage any relationship development between paras I control? How adult does romancing get in this game? Are there together cards that initiate physical interactions between paras like slow dancing and cuddling? Thank you

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Thank you!! Paras that you do not control will not build relationships autonomously for now but it's something we want to add after the initial Early Access release Conversations can go on without your input but relationships won't develop without your input, at least for now Yes, there is a together cards first the first kiss for instance. Once you become lovers, you can then do physical interactions when you want, without going through together cards

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Thank you! The time automatically pauses when you open the menu to pick a card. If you don't like the choices, you will have to wait for the next batch of cards. We are testing the game to make sure it feels good and it's possible that we add a way to shuffle the cards in the future if it feels right

Together Cards are interesting and could be fun, as long as they are optional. I mean, that if I just want the Paras to chat without bothering to have "meaningful" impact for the conversation I can safely ignore the TC alert . I think you have already answered yes in a previous post

The cards are organized in columns. The cards above the head of a given characters are the cards that this specific character can "say"

y
yaya Sou · February 28, 2025

Just re-read lol, Couple questions: Can paras autonomously leave conversations? is the 1h timer per para or for the whole household? And what exactly decides if the card is green or not? (i tried to figure it out, but got nothing😅) about the % pop-up it's a little unclear whos "Amused" and whos "Uncomfy" and iirc some relationship labels are one-sided right? How is that gonna work with interactions & "success chances"?

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Paras can autonomously leave conversations if they have to go to work or if they are really tired and need to go to sleep, for instance The 1h timer is per group of Parafolks so your Paras might be split between two different group for instance. In that case, you will be able to choose one card per group every hour Green cards are joke cards, Pink cards are romance cards, Blue cards are "get to know" cards and the rest of the cards are white We're still improving the % breakdown pop-up, thanks for the feedback, it still needs improvements! Yes, relationships can be one-sided so this popup should show that if it's the case

I just want to thank the team for being so committed, genuine, transparent and thoughtful, it truly warms my heart. I look forward to the Friday update every week. Together Cards look super exciting! I love that the player has active choices, but not endless options, and that there's no micromanaging and a chance of things going wrong. So much more involved gameplay than frantically queueing up a bunch of convo options... Can you remind us what happens when the player doesn't choose a card, does it default to one of them randomly or does the group conversation stay on the previous topic?

S
Synthia Hubbard · February 28, 2025

I was just about to ask about autonomy.

F
Fran Smith · February 28, 2025

I wonder whether later there could be a kind of gossip system introduced within these together cards. For example. If there is later, within the romance system, cheating is a thing, if a parter who cheats, and they're seen by someone, cards could be used to pass that information around to various Paras, which might or might not reach the right ears, so if a friend or family member happened to find out, they'd be likely to tell. Or gossip cards like, "Did you know is pregnant?", or " retired?" etc. The possibilities around this are endless. it would require a system of recording who knows what gossip (although Paras have a memory, right?), and a system for gossip lines to die out over time, but that would really add to conversations and the gameplay around those conversations. And a system where modding could add to those possibilities. That would really make the game and Paras feel alive and their lives progressive and dynamic, to see gossip spread around, both good and bad, of course. I'm not necessarily thinking now, but in the future...

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Gossips and the ability to lie is something we're very interested in testing later! I think it could be really fun!

N
Neeon · February 28, 2025

Can every card be targeted towards someone? In the first picture the "ask if single" doesn't have the target message.. Does it only show up when hovering? And what if I want to ask about the job of one particular para? Or I want to be closer to one in particular? Additionally, when starting a conversation, will there be a way to choose the type of vibe we want? If I want my para to argue with another but they don't have a negative relationship yet, how can I make them? Do I just have to wait around for an opportunity to maybe show up?

Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Only some cards are targeted. We might add a small icon on them to make it clearer If you want to be friend with one particular Para only, you can form a group with just the two of you. We're still working on how being mean to a Para will work and we might add ways for the players to choose to be mean during a conversation

Love this!❤️ Can't wait to see how this evolves throughout development!✨ A question about autonomy! If one member in your household is having a conversation but you're currently busy controlling another para, would the player still need to actively go back and choose cards or would cards be randomly decided? Also what happens if you don't choose at all?🤔

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Thank you! The autonomy will not pick cards for you and your characters can still talk or play piano together for instance even if you don't choose any cards. If you are busy controlling a different character and another Para is in a group and it's time to pick a together cards, you will be able to click the together card button in the interface to select a card before resuming to managing your Para

A
Aristess · February 28, 2025

Am I right, if we have 2+ paras in household, after 1 hour talking in group we can choose only one para to "use" card, so other para will lose their chance to do it? Well, I hope time flies fast in game...🙏🏻 And, don't want to complain, but the perfectionist in me screaming loud when see this chaotic positions of together cards...😅 is there any chance we can customize them and make them... straight?😅

A
Aristess · February 28, 2025

Uhh I think it sounds too serious and bad. I really like your team and game, and I will definitely play it and love it! Thank you for your hard work! It's just me and my perfectionism...😅

I LOVE the extra info given when hovering over cards!! And the ability to talk/target a specific Para when in a group convo is so dynamic! The together cards seem like they'll be alot of fun to play with and *actually* effect gameplay quite significantly🤩🤩 I do have a question tho, say you wanted to ask a para out on a date would that be a separate option when selecting the para? Or will it show up in a conversation(like the event cards) or maybe both?

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Thank you!! Regarding asking people on a date, we don't yet have systems to plan social events and choose a place and time, for instance. When we add that later, we will probably add Together Cards to invite someone on a date, yes!

This is really interesting! I’ll have to see how it functions when I actually play the game. Right now, it seems a bit robotic? Personally I like my stories and relationships to play out naturally, I wonder would this make it feel too controlled? I’d like the aspect of having certain things happen on their own. Like rather than choosing a crush, my para naturally develops a crush based on social interaction and personality. I’d definitely love to see more of this system when I play!

I appreciate so much how you guys increase the number of cards rather than add a randomize option! It's bc for me, makes a lot of sense to choose between the actions your parafolk are intended to do, instead manipulate them to do what YOU like, it feels like they're actual living being with their own identity! ❤️ Good job as always!!

This is incredible, it feels like you could make together cards about anything. Thinking of modding, if you can even add properties that stick around after selecting a card, that sounds like story progression. Imagine you decide to throw a murder mystery dinner. You invite people over, and now you're getting cards to just hand out fake identities, and chat as a host. Getting these identities could change how you interact with others at the party, but also give you options to be bored, or upset at the identity you were given if you're a guest. A Para assigned the victim identity decides to lay down on the floor during the big reveal event, and it's up to everyone to ask questions to find out who did it. And it's so easy to imagine how that'd play out with this system. Amazing!

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

How imaginative! I can't wait to see what modders will do!

Panthro Samah · February 28, 2025

I really love this system. It's so open, you can make a lot of expansions... You can create open relationships, work relationships, party buddies... There is a lot of potential to develop with this mechanic. And this makes me think: There will be tutorials for modding before early release? I'm anxious to learn!

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Thank you! Yes, we plan on creating guides to help modders!

I love the idea of cards since the beginning! but In the future of the game, will you add attraction? for example, the para is attracted to blondes, brunettes, girls, boys

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Yes, we do plan to add ways to define attractions! It might come after the initial Early Access release though

I like this system a lot! It's simple and doesn't require micro managing wich is something i find very stressful. Something i haven't seen with this system however is the ability to be mean and make enemies. How would that work? Also would normal friendly interactions (like jokes) have an ability to "fail" if two paras have incompatible personalities and make the situation awkward?

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Thank you! We're still working on it but there will definitely be cards around arguing and the enemy relationship label is still planned. Some jokes are more risky than others and Paras can feel embarrassed if they fail. Some Paras can also feel uncomfortable from jokes in general, especially if they don't like the person or if they are not in a good mood

Really cool improvements! Some feedback: I think the vertical cards can be a bit confusing: I didn't understand they were 2 columns, one for each para, until I read the description. Maybe add some vertical dots that connect the cards to each para? Something to show that the cards originate from the para's picture. Can't wait to hear more about the gameplay, good job team!

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Thanks for the feedback, that could definitely help!

D
Dominique Morris · February 28, 2025

Neat! I like the additions but I feel like the screen is getting crowded perhaps you could do it like they do with card games sometime where you see the 3 cards together spread out and when you hover over each they show you the options slightly bigger so you can see and read it. Does that make sense? 🤔

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

Yes! Thank you for the feedback, we are still working on the interface and testing changes like that!

Looks like an exciting mechanic! Is there anyway for is to see what npc’s are doing in the conversation? Do they have randomly selected cards? How do we know what the conversation is about?

A
Alex Massé · February 28, 2025

The conversation is about the card that you pick each time. NPCs can have initatives from time to time as you can see in the gameplay video: https://youtu.be/xIIy4CuGDyU?si=Mb24bPFswLWhuXp7&t=359 You will also be able to see the emotions changing on your own characters as well as NPCs after selecting a card. This way, you know how people react to your choices

T
Thaaeroprincess87 · February 28, 2025

This looks very cluttered...

D
Dominique Morris · February 28, 2025

I agree it looks like it takes up a bit of room on the screen. I'm sure over time they can make it more condensed!
