January recommendations! Lost queer films, Dali's mustache, and 50s nostalgia
Hello!
It's time once again for the monthly feedback video! This is the series of videos that's free to everyone on Patreon -- it started as a Q&A but over the months it's become a fun way for Patrons to recommend stuff that they like to each other. So! If you like my stuff, you might like these other things as recommended by patrons like you!
This month we've got some more interesting British media, including Julie Andrews playing a boy (again) and also an intriguing question: Is there a British equivalent of Tab Hunter or Rock Hudson? (Yes, yes, I know about Archie Leach, but I don't think he was quite so enthusiastically queer, and he didn't really make his fortune until he'd been in America for a while.)
Also, in response to my Bonus Video about lost gay media, I got some more fascinating recommendations for queer films that came and went and maybe deserve a closer look. Of course, my favorite is Little Ashes, purely for Robert Pattinson's mustache as Dalí.
Thanks as always for being a part of this Patreon. And please continue to keep recommendations coming!!!
Here's the "Feedback videos" collection, let me know what you think of this method of organizing them: https://www.patreon.com/collection/332880?view=expanded

Woah is the digitized vintage magazine collection project still ongoing?
Another actor worth mentioning is Alan Bates, he was married but is known to have had gay relationships. One of his (TV) movies is "An Englishman Abroad", based on a true story told by Coral Browne, she plays herself in that movie. Here is a vimeolink to the movie: https://vimeo.com/858290218. Coral Browne, by the way, is also a fascinating lady to look into. But that's another story.
Re. British actors who played masculine roles but were secretly gay: Peter Wyngarde. I'm not sure about his acting career in movies, but he was famous for playing "Jason King" in a TV series with the same name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_King_(TV_series). I vaguely remember watching it on Dutch Television. Here is an obituary in the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/culture/tvandradioblog/2018/jan/18/legend-tributes-paid--cult-tv-star-peter-wyngarde
Oh that's fascinating -- I'm not familiar with either of those guys, but I'll check them out. Thank you!!!
Another English actor who was gay but played mostly straight was Dirk Bogarde
Yes, Dirk Bogarde, especially early on as a bad boy matinee idol in films like "The Sleeping Tiger."
Yay, I made it in again! Also, you were asking about English actors who played masculine roles but were secretly gay; the closest I can think of is Lawrence Olivier. He wasn't overwhelmingly butch, but he was a quite a heartthrob, and while he never actually came out, there are persistent rumours that he was, at the very least, not entirely straight, and in particular that he may possibly have had a long-term relationship with Danny Kaye. There is a story, which again I don't think has ever been confirmed, that when his third wife was being attacked for breaking up his marriage to Vivian Leigh, she replied, "Why is everyone so down on me? Danny Kaye was there long before I came along."
Lilies is amazing. I saw it long ago and it's stayed with me. I highly recommend it. It's romantic but sad.
Hi Matt. Thanks for sharing the movie Coming Out from the GDR. I did not know it premiered at the time of the opening of the Wall. Awesome. 🥰
Also, I may have asked this elsewhere, but this seems like the better place for others to see too; whatever happened to the Buffy video you were planning?
Still in the works, just on kind of a backburner for the moment because of how much research it's going to need!
I love that they rolled out collections right after I spent a weekend watching old videos month by month 😝
