Bonus video! Tab's Tabloid Troubles and Roddy McDowall: Pirate!
Hello there! In this week's bonus video, we're diving into the coded double-talk in some 50s-era tabloids. What's the REAL agenda behind these magazines? It's not always as it seems, and I have a hunch that some articles about hunky himbo Tab Hunter were designed more to manipulate the star than share anything substantive with the audience.
And! I have the story of Roddy McDowall and an awkward run-in with the FBI back in the 70s, and also a sneak peek at the Rock Hudsony fun I'm gathering for the next video.
Plus a delightful sketch involving Tab and Ethel Merman! You can watch the full segment here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2uY3lOqZos

As a horror fan I know Roddy from some fun horror movies like Cutting Class, Fright Night, Shakma, and The Legend of Hell House
I'm impressed that Tab manages to hold his own in a duet with Ethel Merman. I've heard that Donald O'Connor found doing this number with her (in Call Me Madam) challenging because of her overpowering voice. Thanks for finding that clip!
He really was a good singer! I think he could've had a Broadway career around this time, though it doesn't seem to be something he was interested in until he was a bit too old to break in.
Damn, I hit return without hitting shift by accident; but now that I look at it, that comment was getting ridiculously long anyway, I think I'll leave it at that unless you actually want more of this rambling (which I fully accept you almost certainly don't...) Just gonna very quickly say, if you do decide to check out any of this stuff, go with the Whazzat Kangeroo version of Speak To Me Bill, it's in two parts but it's the best-quality version. Also I misspelled Whazzat in the first paragraph. Not my finest hour!
Hi again! Okay, I hope it's been long enough that you don't end up feeling bombarded, because I absolutely have to tell you about Zoobilee Zoo, which I have been binge-watching on YouTube for the last few weeks. Not only is it significantly better than a lot of kids' stuff (especially 80s kids' stuff), but there's some... interesting stuff going on. Firstly, about half of the main characters (Bravo Fox, Van Go [sic] Lion and Mayor Ben) strike me as being at least somewhat queercoded. Secondly, there are several episodes (Endangered Zoobra, Talkarella, When You Wish Upon a Tooth Fairy, Smart Dummy and Lady Wassat) which involve one or more people wearing drag. But most importantly, I am entirely convinced that Van Go Lion and Bill Der Beaver are a couple. Evidence herewith (episodes in no particular order): Trading Places: Not only do they have a very coupley vibe throughout, but during the final reprise of So Many Colours In The World, see how affectionately (you could even say lovingly?) Bill looks at Van Go on the line "always beauty there to see". Smart Dummy: Bravo holds a dance marathon, there aren't enough female Zoobles to go around, so Bill has to dance with Van Go. When he's told about this, he seems very happy about it; he also volunteers to drag up, even though he's not remotely femme-presenting as a rule. When apparently offered the chance to swap to a female partner, he refuses immediately, and during the dance, when Van Go gets too tired to carry on, Bill is very disappointed. Seems like he really just wants to dance with Van Go. A lot. Even though Van Go keeps dropping him. (Also: two men, one of them in drag, dancing in each others' arms... that would have been daring for any mid-eighties show. For one aimed at young kids, it's absolutely phenomenal.) Zooble Hop: About 17 mins in, Van Go falls off a ladder. Bill catches him and then just... stands there, cradling him in his arms, for several seconds longer than he really has to. This is in spite of the fact that he seems to be kind of struggling under the weight. Speak to Me Bill: This one's my favourite! Bill and Van Go are feuding, but when Van Go believes Bill's been seriously hurt, he drops everything to go to him, falling to his knees at what he thinks is Bill's bedside and saying things like "Why did this have to happen to you - why couldn't it have happened to me?" Meanwhile, Bill (who is fine) is standing in the background, openly weeping at the revelation of how much Van Go cares for him. And Bill's not a very emotionally demonstrative person, as a general rule.
Your shirt is AMAZING!
Yes, it shows me too that it's private
Sorry about that — it should be playable now, but if it’s still causing problems try this link: https://youtu.be/3bFs7kkhaak
Is anyone else having trouble viewing this video. I keep getting a message that it's private. All previous bonus videos are working.
Argh! Sorry about that — it should be working now. If not try this link: https://youtu.be/3bFs7kkhaak
