Bonus! A sitcom masterpiece that was lost for decades
One of the best-written sitcoms of the 1990s never was broadcast: Gloria Vane. It's an incredibly funny show, it's got an amazing cast, it's surprisingly queer, and yet it never went to series. And I think that's actually a good thing. For this week's bonus video, we're diving into this long-lost sitcom, and why I'm glad they never aired it.

I watch the Elvira pilot annually 馃枻
One thing I love about these bonus videos is that alongside the main channel videos and the livestreams, I get such an education and introductions to new shows. :) Also Matt, your neck is very red in this bonus video. Did you get sunburnt?
I did! Recovering now from the burn I got while traveling.
Despite this being a period piece it reads SO 1990s that I love it
In my classics lecutres at university, my lecturer would explain that in ancient Athens nudity, especially in the gymnasium was seen as weird but they did it anyway becuase it was a 'greek thing' to do; unique to their identity, and had the benefit of presenting the ideal form. I remember when we discusssed satire in Athens, particularly Aristophanes, it was seen as patriotic to 'take the piss' out of the city and its enhabitants, including it's leaders. Sometimes the characters would break the fourth wall (I think Aristophanes invested that) to call the Athenians stupid. They felt true democracy could only be met if you could be as frank as possible without being defamitory or seditious.
You basically just said what I was thinking, Gloria vane wasn't gay enough, like are you being served or keeping up appearances. I kinda liked Frasier but the show would have been far better if it was based around real gay men and not make believe gay men. It could have been a younger, very different, very american version of vicious, just not as fun as vicious is. Sadly the British did dry, cutting comedies far better than we Americans even could or would. The Elvira show could have been amazing if it had been a version of Elvira vs Wednesday with Pee Wee Herman tossed in for good measure,. . . good God that sounds like a drug trip of a tv show, I'm still leaving it in because it's far too good of an idea to take out. Have a tripping week
I was certain that Gloria鈥檚-ex was going to confide that he was gay. I almost wonder if that was Keenan鈥檚 original plan but was asked to change it.
So reading very slightly between the lines, it seems you may be doing a video on the history of sitcoms, and in particular queerness in sitcoms. If that's so, you may possibly find these two unaired pilots useful; and even if you don't, you'll still probably enjoy them at least a bit! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ1T2R7DOTw&t=617s and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPR6v3Kt2yU&t=971s
If you want more of Keenan's work as a farceur, I can't recommend his trilogy of novels enough - 'Blue Heaven' 'Puttin' on the Ritz' and 'My Lucky Star'. They centre on two morally-flexible gay friends aspiring to stardom and getting themselves in-and-out of tricky situations along the way. The third in the series is a taste of 'what could have been' with Gloria Vane because it's set in Hollywood and makes a lot of hay in the world of superstar egos, sleazy tabloids and closed-door scandals. I've never devoured a series more hungrily and was still left wanting more!
Oh thanks for reminding me, I've been meaning to read those forever!
