Bonus! The awkwardest theater seatmate in the world

For a time, a woman named Maggie Gallagher was one of the world's most outspoken opponents of marriage equality: She was on the news, she wrote articles, she spoke at anti-equality rallies. You name it, if there was an opportunity to say something terrible about queer people getting married, she was available to say that terrible thing. She was also ... my seatmate at 8, the play about the freedom to marry. You may be wondering if that a little awkward, and I can tell you that it was more awkward than you can possibly imagine. That story plus an odd detail about Lisa Simpson's mouth in this week's bonus video.

Hi! So you mentioned waaay back in your end-of-year Q&A that you were planning to do an Are You Being Served video at some point, which I am entirely in favour of because I feel like Mr Humphries never really got his moment in the sun. The fact that he’s gay went from being so ahead of its time that it couldn’t even be mentioned explicitly to being so behind the times that his existence was an embarrassment to the gay community, without even a microsecond’s pause to acknowledge how groundbreaking he was. Therefore, in case it helps, have a bunch of clips showing John Inman being a full-on gotdammed National Treasure in a wide variety of situations: - John Inman meets Kermit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IFupU5VxzU - meets basil brush https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXl6Z14oWxc - Never been there before https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3bVSleFb1I - striptease https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcEX16wR3Ws - John Inman let’s all be fairies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVLCvbENbqA - John Inman in Raffles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sgyy1cLigcM - Inman as principle boy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SSGzODJY14 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1ZV1bFX_7I - One more for luck: a clip about the history of pantomime dames https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOkillkRqG8 Also you might want to check out a couple of other sitcoms from that time that have queercoded characters: Up Pompeii, with Frankie Howerd playing an extremely camp character who we’re nevertheless supposed to take seriously as a red-blooded heterosexual man who is totally into girls, honest; and Allo Allo, from the same writing team as Are You Being Served, which has an even more obviously gay character – but he’s not part of the main cast like Mr Humphries is. And while we’re on the subject of the Q&A, I just want to add that, both as an English person and a lesbian, I hereby give you official permission to appropriate all of the cultures! I really enjoyed your video on But I’m a Cheerleader, and I’d love to see more female-focused stuff on your channel.

Thank you for the links! I don't have a video about Are You Being Served in the works, it's just something that's on the long-range list of shows to take a closer look in the future. Not 100% sure if that'll come together or not, or maybe be a part of a different video. But if it happens, these John Inman clips will definitely be helpful!

Incredible. To think . . . she's still up there, somewhere, crawling around in the ducts, muttering about the gays.

Lolllll yes that's why we haven't heard anything out of her in a while!

I know that it was a slip of the tongue, but I could believe that people would have been on the watch for Maggie Smith starting shit at different venues. I never let that prim, regal bearing fool me. She always seemed like she was actually a huge partier, and could easily get into some knock down, drag out fist fights when she was too deep in the sauce...

After the way she spoke to her gay husband Michael Caine in California Suite ...

And thank you, for all the videos of the history of Q Community. I'm almost 2 hours into the history of marriage equality video. I'm also the cis person in previous video comments that how I got my mom to vote against Prop 8 was reminding her concern about children born out of wedlock being called bastards by others. As gays and lesbians would still have children, wasn't it better that they not be bastards? And for about a minute she sat there thinking and then said "you're right". Years later I realized there was actually a bit of jealousy there, that homosexuals could have sex without the fear of getting pregnant, therefore they didn't have to be married to have sex. Mom raised me, though it didn't take, to only have sex with your spouse. Her sister on the other hand said to me in front of mom that "you should try on the shoes before you buy them."

This is such a good example of how progress happens! One conversation at a time.

You know, I spent too much time trying to get it pointed the other way, and eventually just had to declare a truce
