Bonus! Inside accounts of political malpractice on the Prop 8 campaign

I've been digging through some of my own archival footage recently -- interviews that I did ten to fifteen years ago around Prop 8 and the marriage equality movement. And I've rediscovered some pretty intriguing accounts of early activism for marriage, as well as a very frustrating failure during the Prop 8 campaign to serve the very people the campaign was supposed to be helping.

Plus! The dates for my European book & research tour are coming together! I'll have more firm details soon, but for now we're penciling in May 5 in Stockholm, May 7 in Vienna, May 10 in Utrecht, and May 17 in Heidenberg.

I love genealogy too! Wow, you went back to the 1600s, that’s amazing! I’d be interested to know more about what you find or what it’s like visiting the places they’re from. Do you know when your people came to America? Mine all came between 1880-1913, so I don’t have a ton of stuff on them before that, but some records here and there from their old countries (when they were there it was Austria, Russia, & Hungary, but on today’s map it’s Ukraine, Poland, Latvia, & Slovakia!)

I did not miss your American tour! It was a pleasure to meet you and I have several of your stickers on my file cabinet I see every day. Also, don’t make them too short or I won’t get through my recycling!

I am totally here for Prop8 gossip. I’ve heard some over the years. Famously awful.

Sorry to see Portugal is not on your tour plans, still hope you can come here, my friend.

I hope so too! It's just a bit tricky since a lot of my events so far are over on the eastern side of things. Still working out the details!

Ugh Prop 8 😑 You’re doing great work, Matt. I’d love to see you speak in Toronto!

Good for Molly! Thanks Molly! It was a very frustrating time when Obama won while Prop 8 passed. We had anti prop 8 signs stolen and stomped on in our front yard here in L.A. County in the San Gabriel Valley prior to the election. In previous years we had am anti Prop 22(marriage between a man and a woman) sign stomped on during the night. It was a wonder that the Briggs initiative of 1978 to ban homosexual teachers went down.

I remember a video that I think was put out by Funny Or Die called Prop 8: The Musical that was both funny and really made some good points about the hatred and hypocrisy behind Prop 8.

Everyone loved it at the time but now I think it's a bit cringe! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_hyT7_Bx9o

My mom spent more than a decade assembling a 1,000-page genealogy of our family. She has Opinions on ancestry.com and they’re not good ones.

Lol I don't quite love it, though it's pretty convenient. Lots of misinformation and uncited claims though!

I remember the Prop 8 campaign pretty vividly, even all the way up here in the great white North. Canada had just passed marriage equality across the country three years before, and it seems that incrementally the U.S would be following the same path. When Newsom and then mayors of other California jurisdictions took their stands, it seemed that the engine was picking up steam, and then Prop 8 backlash... I remember looking up the ads for it, wondering what scare tactics they were employing. It honestly didn't seem that they would grip the public's consciousness given that a lot of them seemed to feature the same shlubby looking dude in a mis-matched suit. Like in this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PgjcgqFYP4 and in this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kKn5LNhNto I'm very interested to hear all the dishing behind the scenes that enabled this George Costanza cosplayer to come out on top, at least temporarily. Matt if you are able to make it to my hometown sometime in May/June it will be great to see you here. I'll be the guy somewhere in the crowd wearing the Boston Raiders and/or Montreal Metros shirt (Do I wear HR merch everyday? No. But given how many days I do, I feel safe calling this now....)

Fun fact, the guy in the mismatched suit was indicted and recommended for disbarment for his role in the January 6 insurrection

I'm not sure why, but whenever I load the video here on patreon, it audio plays twice.

Oh hm that shouldn't be. What kind of device/operating system are you using?
