Bonus! Andy Warhol's Frankenstein is not what it claims to be

The film Andy Warhol's Frankenstein is not actually, as the name might suggest, the work of Andy Warhol. (Aside from one visit to the set and his attendance at an after party.) So how did his name wind up on this weird piece of ... let's be polite and call it "art"? And is the star of the film, Joe Dallesandro, really the "first overtly sexualized male in the movies" as many around him claimed? All that and more in this week's bonus video!

And join us today for a livestream of The Old Dark House, one of my favorite movies and one of the funniest horror films ever made. We go live at noon pacific/3pm eastern at http://twitch.tv/mattbaume

And there's lots more livestreams coming up:

Just read that we lost Udo "Fuck Life in the Galbladder" Kier today (Nov 23rd) at the age of 81. What an absolute legend and gay icon this man was. As I mention below, if someone wants to honor his legacy after reading this, a great film to watch is the last (and one of the few) leading man roles he ever did, and that was in 2021's Swan Song (which is now an even more apt title).

Ah what a loss! Time for a film festival. We can skip Ace Ventura.

Man, I wish I knew you streamed old movies! I would have loved to see the Gods and Monsters one. I plan to go back and watch the VODs you still have up there, how long do you keep them on Twitch?

M
Matt Baume · November 24, 2025

Oops sorry I missed this message earlier! Twitch only keeps them up for two weeks, I believe.

Kees him! Kees him again! VHY IS ZIS NOT VERKING?!? Not an exact quote but Flesh For Frankenstein was why cult movie rentals used to be a whole business model.

It is very much the kind of film we would have happily rented when I was in high school!

I got a couple more Evelina quotes I think you might like! Here's the heroine talking about someone she just met: "Mrs Selwyn is very kind and attentive to me. She is extremely clever; her understanding, indeed, may be called masculine; but, unfortunately, her manners deserve the same epithet; for, in studying to acquire the knowledge of the other sex, she has lost all the softness of her own." Oh these masculine women and feminine men! And Mrs Selwyn herself later says of the heroine's love interest, "There must have been some mistake in the birth of that young man; he was, undoubtedly, destined for the last [ie, the previous] age; for he is really polite!" Which shows that the "young people today have no manners" complaint is also an eternal one.

Somewhat related side topic: Have you seen Swan Song with Udo Kerr? I think it a 2023 movie. I really liked it.

I have not! I'm learning that I should expand my repertoire with more Kerr films.

Fuck life in the gallbladder is definitely an all-timer of a line. I'm a little disappointed though that you skated past the incredible actor who delivered that gem. Udo Kier is an absolute legend, having popped up in well over 200 movies over a sixty year career with many of them being horror, no doubt due to his perpetual scowl and heavy german-accented speaking voice. I think I first saw him in the Arnold vs. the literal Devil action/horror film End of Day in 1999, where he welcomes the devil in his home, the devil sleeps with his wife and daughter, and then he literally punches Udo's head off. It's not "Fuck life in the Gallbladder," but it was still quite an introduction to Udo's Oeuvre for a young fan like myself. I later found out that Udo has been openly gay across nearly that entire career, where he has worked simultaneously in some of the highest and lowest budget movies imaginable. He's been directed by Gus van Sant to Rob Zombie, from Lars Van Triers multiple times to Uwe Boll multiple times. It's been quite a career. After all that time though, he finally had the chance to headline a leading role in a film, and it was deeply meaning one called Swan Song (2021) where he played a retired hairdresser abruptly getting called out of that retirement. It was an absolutely beautiful film, directed by Todd Stephens, who made Edge of Seventeen (his first feature, based on his own teenage years) back around the same time that I was watching Udo in End of Days. Swan Song was as deeply autobiographical as Edge of Seventeen was for Stephens, as it was the story of the first gay man that Stephens ever met in their hometown of Sandusky, Ohio. Udo gives a performance to be absolutely treasured in Swan Song, it was one of my favorite films of 2021, and it's one that I strongly suggest that anyone reading this to seek out. Here's a trailer for it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heN0JtJu4pE
