Bonus! What's really behind those BONKERS ex-gay "cures"

There are a lot of "ex-gay" "therapists" who say they can "cure" homosexuality. But they more you hear about their supposed treatments, it's hard not to notice that a lot of them seem really really really gay. So in this week's bonus video we're taking a look at some of the weirdest, the gayest, and also a few that are truly horrifying. (And a heads-up: This is going to include some talk about sexual abuse.)

Plus, a tiny little sneak-peek at my next video -- about the 2000 X-Men film, and why it feels even more relevant today than when it came out.

Hey, have you come across this little oddity? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR8PRGf72Ms Not exactly a positive portrayal, but at least he does get his revenge on the guy who was too busy being aggressively hetero to pay attention to his order. Could be seen as a Frankenstein-ish "revenge of the oppressed" narrative; or, as is more likely to have been intended given the era, a story about how Those People are dangerous and will destroy everything.

Oh yes I'm familiar with that one! The pansy character is probably a reference to the real-life flamboyant actor Tyrell Davis. I haven't covered Flip the Frog because so many of the character's shorts are, unfortunately, insanely racist! ...Which really overshadows this momentary gay reference in this one short. More about Flip's jaw-dropping racism here: https://trettleman.medium.com/the-flip-the-frog-cartoons-ranked-66a4ae43597

also reminds me of how myself and a lot of other trans people leaned hard into masc or femme presentation in a last ditch attempt to conform. spoiler: it doesn't work

That clip is from one of my all time favorite sketches from The Kids in the Hall. It's a show that my parents would not let me watch when I was a kid (I don't think because of the rampant Queerness.. although I'm sure that didn't help, it was more likely because of the rampant drug use within a lot of the sketches). Once I discovered it through bootleg DVDs in University though, it definitely became a favorite (both because of the rampant Queerness, and the fact that it was just really funny). There is also some humor to be had with some of these ex-gay cures. They are all evidence-free, silly, and often counter-productive (I mean seriously? Cuddling with a man to make you straight?), and just the irony alone deserves some chuckles. At their core though, everyone of them is insidious, as they all seek to set people at war against a part of themselves, which is a setting people up in a fight that they are destined to lose no matter what the outcome. When you think of just how much time and effort has been wasted by literally countless people throughout history trying to change people from gay to straight, and the amount of emotional pain that been paid by all these people who were either coerced or volunteered to go through these "treatments".... it really just boggles the mind. It also boggles the mind to think how many people still go through them across the world in 2025, and makes me very proud to be Canadian as we are one of the countries who took the needed step to officially ban all conversation therapies (with another point of pride being that we're the birthplace of all the Kids in the Hall :) It also crazy to me how it never had to be this way at all. Much of Nicolosi's work, as well as many of the anti-gay therapies are fundamentally a perversion of Freud's psychodynamic orientation. Freud thought that male homosexuality was a result of boys not resolving their Oedipus complex, so he did see it as something that was off-kilter in "normal" development. He never however, claimed that it was something wrong, nor even something that was maladaptive if of itself. Freud always believed that something was a problem only if the patient thought that it was a problem - so if a patient was happy being gay, he was happy for them to be gay. He was actually remarkable progressive in that way, and I think that he would be absolutely as disgusted with how the legions of anti-gay "therapists" like Nicolosi have perverted his work for almost a century.

So all these 'ex-gays' got to rake in the money while using their 'cures' to get themselves off and abuse other peop!e.
