Bonus video! Anne Hathaway lied to get a part in Brokeback Mountain

Okay, sure, Anne Hathaway told a little lie during her audition for Brokeback Mountain. But can you blame her for not wanting to do Princess Diaries sequels for the rest of her life?

Anne's little fib helped her land the part, but that was just one many problems faced by the film. Today, Brokeback Mountain is regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made (at least, regarded that way by me) ... but back in the early 2000s, it was nearly impossible to find stars willing to appear in a gay romance. This week's bonus video is about just a few of the road bumps that the film ran into, and why there were numerous points at which it looked like it might never get made.

I really didn't appreciate the film the first time I saw it at the theatre. I thought, oh god another somber, sad movie where the gays die/get killed/commit suicide, and there had been so much hype! When I saw the film on TV at home years later, I really appreciated it more! I don't know if it was just me being in a mood the first time, or what? But I think it's really a small intimate movie that may benefit from seeing it in a quiet home setting.

Hi Matt, thanks for the Bonus video, one correction: Almodovar did not direct Y tu mamá también, the Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón did.

It's kind of crazy that it's so expected that actors lie to get a role, it's basically a cliche. In fact, there's a whole sub-category of actors who have lied just about their skill with horses, like Daniel Craig before he filmed Cowboys & Aliens (although to his credit, he did become a more than passable rider), Rachel McAdams before she filmed To the Wonder (where she was terrified of horses, not to mention allergic, but told Terrence Malick she loved being around them), and then of course, there's this story of Anne before Brokeback. What's really never acknowledged though, it just how dangerous making these types of claims are. You could so easily be put in a position where you could really hurt yourself, or someone else. Eddie Redmayne lied about being an experience rider, and came within a hair's breadth of seriously hurting himself and several crew members on the set of Elizabeth I, and was called out as "fucking liar" by director Tom Hooper. He told this story seemingly for laughs on Conan O'Brien, but again, is it really funny? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S518xSvUlTY Even "funny" stories about lying to get into funny movies aren't really funny when you think about them. There's very famously the story of the actress who lied to get the part of the waxer in the 40-year old Virgin. She said she had actually worked as a waxer, and she hadn't, and she came within a hair of tearing of poor Steve Carrell's nipple. Again, any time this story is told by the actors, they play it for laughs... but.. I try as I might, I can't be anything but horrified with how someone's lies nearly led to beloved actor getting seriously injured.

I remember Michael Landon on Johnny Caron's The Tonight Show talking about how the actors didn't know how to ride horses when they filmed the opening sequence for Bonanza. It was pretty humorous. Looking forward to your next video about Brokeback!

I just knew it was going to be the horse! Lying in an audition about being able to ride a horse seems like a rite of passage for actors, second only to "Oh yes, I'm great at accents", lol. Cannot wait for your video on Brokeback!!

I had no idea Michelle Williams was hurt during the making of the film. They seem to have covered that up really well. I've actually injured my left knee 3 times in my life. Hyperextension in 2002, dislocation of the patella in 2011 (on my birthday, no less!), and a car accident in December of that same year. So yeah, I know exactly how she felt.

I remember an episode of Friends where Joey said he has the same philosophy, but he had to be told by the titular "friends" that he went too far: "this isn't like riding a horse, this is like growing a turtleneck!"
