Bonus! The adorable friendship of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen
Is there any more friendship in showbiz as wholesome as Ian McKellen's and Patrick Stewart? I've been doing a lot of Ian-related research for an upcoming video about his show Vicious, and I just keep coming across really lovely stories about how close these two actors are -- so for this week's bonus video, we're diving into their long lovely relationship, from their roles in the X-Men films to giving each other (sometimes terrible) career advice to even officiating a wedding (twice, since the first time Ian messed up some paperwork!)
Also! I'll have a new video for you next week about Vicious and a strange love-hate-love affair that lasted 50 years. We'll be doing the usual pre-premiere livestream on YouTube; then the live watch-along of the new video; and then we'll jump over to Twitch to watch some very funny gay sitcom episodes.
In the meantime, you may want to check out my friend Trevor's YouTube channel, Media Processing -- they're helping me with the edit on the Vicious video, and if you enjoy my stuff I think you'll enjoy theirs. (I especially recommend the videos about Cats and Mamma Mia!)

I have watched the film "Jeffery" several times and always loved Stewart's role... learning that he was essentially doing an impression of Mckellen was just lovely.
My one big unanswered question is whether Ian was aware of the impressions when they were happening!
This comment is unrelated to this video but I know you've mentioned the phenomenon of ferns in gay bars in the 70s/80s on TV shows - not sure if you've seen Phil Edwards YouTube video "How restaurants lost their personality" or not but it goes pretty deep into the 70s phenomenon of Fern bars (particularly in San Francisco) and while the video isn't geared towards gay bars at all, it made me think you might be interested in the history being covered there (since it broadly dovetails with what 70s TV comes to think gay bars look like). Just wanted to share.
I’m your final video you pronounce it I Clavdivs. Is this in reference to something?
Oh haha it's because the title graphic uses the Latin spelling where U is written as V!
I've been a fan of your channel for years and have finally become a patron. You are amazing, Matt!
Yay welcome aboard!
OMG, 20 seconds in and I'm already LOVING this video because of your Sub Rosa t-shirt!
Haha thank you, it's available in my shop! https://mattbaume.dashery.com/products/24171455-beverlys-dream-t-shirt
When Jeffrey was in theaters we went to see it for Captain Picard. Then went back to see it again and brought all our friends because back then you didn't know if you'd ever be able to see a movie again. I'm surprised it didn't have a more lasting presence given how endearing and quotable it is.
I remember going to the movies with my BFF to see Jeffrey. Laughed our asses off. Others in the full WEHO theater seemed to be afraid to respond.
I do love this relationship, and the hope it portents for people to make/revitalize a deep friendship late in life. Often when I talk to older people about friendship, they tend to only speak to the pain of losing friends. The idea of making new friends can be such a dauting prospect at any age, but I would assume that it's most difficult to conceive of when you are older. You would still have many of the same emotional hang ups that torpedo most fledgling friendships (which would likely be even more entrenched), plus that additional pressure that comes from knowing that any relationship started now is going to shorter, so why even bother? To be able to point to this example of two admittedly crotchety men who only formed a close bond in their 60s and how much it has enriched both their lives as a rejoinder to this, is vital. After all, everyone deserves to have friends, at any age. They are such a big part of what makes life worth living.
I am going to push back a bit on the whole "Star Trek was a niche nerd" thing. I watched the reruns when I was aged 8-10 in the late sixties, every afternoon after school. I was NOT in the nerd demographic at all. I loved the show and I didn't know anyone who didn't. And I am talking about my pod being my neighbors I roller skated and skateboarded with in the street. And also the kids in my school. What I mean is that I had a very random friend set with one thing agreed upon. Star Trek. When the buzz came out that there would be a Star Trek movie , I didn't know anyone who wasn't excited about it (mixed reviews on that movie later but I like the European pacing and the ethereal style.) All that said I loved this vid extra. I saw quite a bit about how Ian and Patrick are close buds. I'm so glad to hear more of the story.
Loved this video!
Aw yay thank you! :D
