Bonus video! Julia Child's kitchen goofs (and creative saves)
Hello there!
For my most recent YouTube video, I did some research into the early days of PBS (and its predecessor, NET), and came across a lot of fun Julia Child stuff that I didn't have room for in the final video. But I thought you'd get a kick out of a couple of clips in which she screws things up, and because it's live TV (or live-to-tape) has to come up with a hasty save. The first is from a very early episode of The French Chef, in which she has some inspiring words for any kitchen novice ("if you're alone in the kitchen, who's going to see?") and also an appearance on Letterman in which a dead burner turns a hamburger into a gourmet (????) meal. Plus, the time Julia scared the shit out of Dick Cavett.
Here are some places where you can watch the stuff I talk about in this video:

I've heard a similar story to the turkey one, but it was cutting the ends off a roast because they didn't have a pan big enough.
You know, the more I've looked into this one, the more I think it's one of those urban-myth type stories that everyone swears happened to someone they know!
Oh, speaking of flubs that happened on TFC! In the Cold Turkey Galantine episode, Julia pulled out a pair of weights and a board to show people how to evenly flatten out chicken breasts. Needless to say, it's not the most stable fixture: https://youtu.be/YF2xmd348Kk&t=581
My dad has told me on multiple occasions that when he first saw Julia Child on television, he thought it was a comedy show. (Which makes Dan Ackroyd’s SNL impersonation all the more fitting). And yes, I always saw Sue Ann Nivens as a satirical take on Julia Child. You mentioned Pedro. Did you ever read Judd Winnick’s graphic novel “Pedro and Me”? If not, it’s a beautiful love letter to a friend.
I'm glad you will be talking about Lance and Pedro in the future. Fascinating people, both of them, and trailblazers who very much deserve to be featured in the current conversations about Queer Media I've also had a personal fascination with Julia Child. I'm too young to have ever seen her in her heyday, but there's just something about a woman who was able to break through, and headline a show and eventually launch an industry at a time when so much was lined up against her. It's pretty inspiring. I've watched most of the media involving her over the years, from old episodes of her show, to the 2009 movie Julie & Julia (anchored by a fabulous Meryl Steep performance), to the 2021 doc Julia which first screened at TIFF in 2021 before being available to stream on HBO Max. That doc reveals a lot of interesting things about her, including that she was very homophobic when she first started out on T.V. Later, after she got to know gay people in the T.V. industry, and then when she lost some of those friends when AIDS hit, she became a huge advocate, and fought for AIDS research funding. I have to say thought, one of my favorite guilty pleasure Julia-related media is the Epic Rap Battle where she faced off against Gordon Ramsay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99-n42Xb6NQ (If you've never gone down the epic rap battle rabbit hole, hold all you appointments for the day. Once you watch one, you will inevitably go through the rest of them). By the way, Matt, what the deal with the T-Shirt? it looks like it's very much about something, but I have no idea what that something is.
Haha this rap battle thing is such a BIZARRE project! Also the tshirt is the most obscure of references to a gay webcomic from a few years ago: https://capitolhillbilliescomic.tumblr.com/

Sorry, to be a downer, the last story sbout removing the turkey's back. The exact story has been going around as a joke for 30+ years.
A cooking mishap I read about a few years ago. I woman wrote a story of the time her cousin (I think it was her cousin), who had NO cooking experience, decided to make the Thanksgiving turkey for the whole family. Of course, you're supposed to put various vegetable in the cavity of the turkey (where the neck used to be). The recipe called for 8 cloves of garlic. But she mistook clove for head of garlic, and basically rendered the turkey inedible due to the overwhelming garlic taste.
So love Julia child have you seen the amazing doco Julia so interesting
I used to watch PBS alot when I was a kid but never watched American family, kinda knew about it but sitting around watching other people ssitting around talking wasn't something that I thought of as entertaining. Not when you can watch upstairs down stairs
This reminds me of something that happened years ago in the UK where a kids TV show was making pancakes live and the presenter just absolutely killed it. https://youtu.be/cfvkB6sjCaY?si=Z28d75QeiIKk6TTb Also, are you saying Julia Childs supplied the Adam West Batman...?
