Bonus Video! Who was the closeted actor that Armistead cursed out while filming Tales of the City?
Hello there! My travels continue this week, and for this week's bonus video I have a story about a big fight between a writer and an actor. At issue: Writer Armistead Maupin was FURIOUS that the actor in Tales of the City was pretending to be straight. But who was the actor??? It's a mystery, but perhaps some of you will have a theory or two.
Plus! I have some fun footage from the defund-PBS days in the mid-90s, with some clever wordplay involving the Muppets.
(Lol whoops I accidentally set this video to go live about a half day early. Welp, enjoy!)

It would be curious to know when O-E-P-B-S lost its state funding (but still receives significant CPB funding as far as I know). In Idaho, this was more a fervor over programs like "It's Elementary" in 1999 and later the state Republican party did not fully remove state funding for the network, but did force a rotating disclaimer to air on the stations, which started in or around the year 2000 (since discontinued, blessedly) https://www.lmtribune.com/northwest/warning-labels4c75f133/
Oh hmmm it wouldn't surprise me if it was part of that mid-90s fuss! A bunch of states yanked funding around that time.
Seeing the falls ruin the sound is worth a mini ha ha.
you mentioned in a bonus video that you liked Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. You might also like Tipping the Velvet
Seconding Tipping the Velvet (book not the TV adaptation). I love all of Waters books (Fingersmith has two great adaptations: Aisling Walsh's in 2005 and Park Chan-wook's Handmaiden in 2016)
Fun video! Loved the MTM statue opening! Speaking of TOTC, I was watching this crazy early 1972 Brian DePalma movie, Sisters, on TCM and there was a short scene with two women working in a bakery, and one of them had so much charisma and sass she stole the scene with a word and a smile! Then I realized it was Olympia Dukakis! Thanks
The Carlson family defending PBS. This was, truly, the first foretold sign of the apocalypse. Well, not really. I did a bit of digging on Richard (Dick) Carlson, and it seems like the 83 year old is a complicated but fundamentally decent self-made man, who held a variety of journalistic jobs throughout his life as well as several public services posts. It seems like the worst thing about this guy is the total and actual Dick of a son he was blessed with...
Huh! I wonder what happened with his weirdo kid.
It really. does seem like it is Marcus. https://shentonstage.com/jan-5-marcus-damico-what-ever-happened-to-whoozis-jonathan-baileys-openness-is-a-sign-of-a-better-future/
It was Marcus D’Amico. That story has been around for a long time. I am a little hesitant to repeat it, because D’Amico has since died, but as I understand it, he presented himself as straight when he was cast, but was discovered in a gay bathhouse. Having said that, my understanding is that Maupin was asked about this a lot and always denied it, which is probably why he jumped to the “definitely not because he was closeted” line. He said that both D’Amico and Chloe Webb left the series because they didn’t like their characters/wanted to do other things/didn’t want to be typecast. I really loved the first series. And honestly I thought the next two that aired on Showtime really suffered for not having Marcus D’Amico and Chloe Webb (although D’Amico’s Mouse looked absolutely nothing like book Mouse.)
Should ask Armisted while you can!
You're RIGHT
Two side notes...Billy Campbell who played Dr. Jon Fielding (boyfriend of Marcus D'Amico's character Mouse) also played on Dynasty as Stephen Carrington's lover Luke Fuller. (though Billy is heterosexual so not the mystery man). In a recent interview on 'Fresh Air', Connie Chung talked about a phenomenon she was unaware of that has been dubbed 'Generation Connie'. Her presence on TV as the first high profile Asian American female newsperson led many Asian parents of the time to name their daughter Connie.
Oh my God you're right, it's the outrageous Okona from Star Trek!
I was an avid closeted teen viewer of Tales in the UK back in the early 90s. That they recast Mouse does point to it being Marcus D'Amico. Mind you, they did recast Mona too. Was it a definitely a male actor?
The story I've seen uses he/him pronouns ... but who knows, maybe Armistead switched em up to protect whoever it was!
Marcus D'Amico?
