Bonus Video! The weird lost Tobey Maguire sitcom Great Scott, and some awkward auditions
Hello there!
I was doing some research on Wilson Cruz and My So-Called Life when I came across a BONKERS semi-lost sitcom called Great Scott -- not only is it Wilson's first(ish) TV role, it's also an early role for Tobey Maguire, before he was the Spider-Man. But the most interesting thing about it is the astonishingly bigoted casting experience that Wilson Cruz had the strength to overcome, just to get his foot in the door.
Plus! A few more bonus stories about the skin-of-their teeth casting of My So-Called Life, and two important questions: What Spider-Man role would you want Wilson Cruz to play, and do you want me to make a video about my process for writing scripts?
UPDATE: If you're getting any goofy error messages, try watching the video on YouTube -- here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW7o-GQ7Ekc

Would absolutely watch a process video.
Another yes vote to learn about your script writing process please!
As a creative writing student, I'd definitely be interested in a video on your writing processes. Also, just a small request, every so often could we still get the full ending montage? I miss it!
I’m an enthusiastic yes on hearing about your script skills.
Was the Uk dating show Streetmate ever on MTV in the US? It was channel 4 on the UK but I think Channel 4 stuff did turn up on MTV. It ran from 1998 to 2001 originally and was a really simple and cheap format. The host Davina McCall would buttonhole some one on the street who’s up for dating and then just try to find a stranger for them to date. They would go on the date and report back how it went. You would have several couples an episode. One of the things noticeable about it apart from being early reality TV was it was from Series 1 it had gay and bi ‘streetmates’ in the mix. Compared with say Love island now it looks so positive and progressive. There have been a few reboots with different hosts but I feel the magic sauce was Davina McCall who became iconic as host of UK big brother on the back of it.
Oh wow fascinating -- I have never heard of this! I'll have to look it up.
I'd love a video about your process!
This is VERY weird... I have tried watching this video and two times now, it plays for a while (like to 4:37) then suddenly stops, screen goes black and it says " ! This Video Is Unavailable". I have to reload the page, restart playback and Fast-Fwd to where it stopped and then continue playing. And it plays for a few more minutes (to 6:02) then stops again. Matt... what's wrong here?
youtube video propagate into different data centers, I can only imagine you are a little too eager after the upload has had a chance to make it near you yet! give it some time :-) I doubt there is anything Matt could do. There is a fascinating quirk that happens around 300 views - it's worth a google!
Given that I never watched so-call life, I can't comment on Claire Daines crying there, but I did catch her in Romeo + Juliet a bit later, where her climatic cry seemed to be a combination of deep chuckle and full bodied dry heave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJZLcsAmLbM&list=PLZbXA4lyCtqrTfGUgHQCUhsogoT3dps0K&rco=1
Well if you're going to have a crying scene THAT'S the one!
Works!!
I also get a This Video is Private message
Argh! Sorry about that, it should be working now.
Video set to private?
Ah geez I didn’t notice YouTube defaulted to private. Should be fixed now!
