Isotonic, in relation to piercing aftercare

I stumbled across this cute gif that helps to explain the term "isotonic" in relation to piercing aftercare. Isotonic is a phrase you'll hear related to piercing aftercare, saline and sea salt solution in particular. An "isotonic" solution will have the same solute (salt) level as the plasma in our bodies. If a product is less salty than our bodies (hypotonic) it can cause our cells to take on too much water and swell. Think of your fingers getting puffy and wrinkly when you spend a long time in the bath. When something like a home made sea salt solution is saltier than our bodies (hypertonic) it will pull moisture out of our cells, dehydrating them. The cells in our body have a permeable wall that can allow fluid to pass through, this process is called osmosis. Its one way our body can absorb nutrients and help heal wounds. An isotonic aftercare product, like wound wash saline, is important because the body maintains a healthy fluid ratio. Disrupting the fluid ratio at the piercing site means your body has to work a lot harder to heal. So when you think of aftercare, remember the word "isotonic".
