Ghost in the Shell [dungeon dweller ver.]
The net is vast, my friends. And the Ghost in the Shell video is finished.
This is the full unedited version that has been slammed with copyright claims. I'll keep this one for all of you, and work on fixing a public edit to release this weekend. I don't know if there are ads running on this. When a video gets claimed, I can't access the ad controls. Hopefully, they're turned off. I kind of had a feeling this would happen, but at least it's still allowed to be viewed, so watch and enjoy. This is the video as I originally intended it.
Anyway, this didn't end up being the longest video I've ever made, but in terms of how much stuff I consumed, researched, and wrote about, this is the biggest video I've ever made. I know there's some stuff I didn't talk about, but this is the most comprehensive GitS video I was capable of making, and I hope you all enjoy it.
These videos are a lot of work, but very rewarding to do. Many of you have given some good suggestions for future multimedia retrospective videos, like Berserk, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Record of Lodoss War, etc. I've got about a dozen ideas on the list, but because they're so much work, I think I need to space them out. Doing big videos on Vampire Hunter D and GitS back to back has been exhausting. So I'll get to others in the future. Maybe only one or two of these a year from now on.
Next time, we're going back to basics with an obscure Japanese-only game: Nightmare Project YAKATA, a turn-based horror RPG on PS1. After the amount of effort that went into this video, I'm really excited to just talk about a game. Of course, I'll still be pulling in some supplemental material though. I just can't help myself.
Oh, and for those wondering about using DaVinci Resolve instead of Adobe: After spending the last 10 years or so using Premiere, I have to say DaVinci is great. It only took a couple hours to feel comfortable, but after I set up my templates and changed most of the keyboard shortcuts it was great. Definitely different from Adobe, had to look up some tutorials, but I feel totally comfortable now. Also, in almost 100 hours of editing, I had 0 crashes. Adobe would crash at least once an hour. So yeah, I love it. That's just my humble opinion.
Dungeon Chill. Out.

All the happier I joined your Patreon now as I missed the initial release before the copyright bots homed in. Just need to set aside a bunch of hours now to enjoy it properly!
I always interpreted the Puppet Master's end goal as 'having offspring.' Batou in that manga panel joked "Don't worry, I'll make sure you don't get pregnant," and at the beginning of the movie Kusanagi is told of a minor issue that she brushes off as "Must be that time of the month" . The dub changed this line to "loose wire," probably because the translators mistake it for the old sexist remark 'She's acting this way because she's going through her period.' These are actually hints about the ending of the arc/film. The Puppet Master said the only things he lacked to be truly sentient, is the ability to die and reproduce like other living beings. After seeing Kusanagi shares very similar thoughts about her existence as he does, he realises her compatibility is needed for their ghosts to merge and create an 'offspring.' That's why a child's body was chosen in the film, to make it easier for audiences to see that this character has inherited her capabilities from the 'parents,' therefore the next stage in evolution of AI has been achieved.
2045 kinda feels like they wrote it with the intent of targeting it towards a younger audience than the rest of the franchise, then aborted that too late into the process to change it beyond some scenes being more violent.
Yeah. Seems like there was a lot of outside interference. Possibly they wanted to make a series about the sustainable war and were forced to include a simpler story and younger characters.
Thank you for another awesome upload! much appreciated, much chilled! On the note of black magic 66, i have read the manga and the anime, and they are completely different which shocked me. Still watching this video, so not sure if it is covered. But have you considered doing a Shiro retrospective looking at his works and the differences in media? Thank you for showing love to Patlabor. ! Loved the movies and less so the TV show, as the Movies hit the hardest for me. Or have you considered other authors in the future (no pressure or rush), such as Yuzo Takada 3X3 eyes?, as this is a dense series wish to much history and social commentary, that gets no love in current day which to me is criminal. I think you as the chilliest dungeon master, would be able to bring life to the franchise in 2026, but i get that exposure for such media is needed, and this might be too much of an audacity? And the games are RPGs, which have a lot of Japanese text in it, which might make it more involved to do it if you considered it. Again no pressure, and thank you for all you do!
Thanks for the suggestions! I always try to connect things to video games, so I didn’t dive too much into his other works. I’ve heard of 3x3 Eyes, but have never checked it out. I’ll add it to the list for possible future retrospectives.
Dude, you totally killed it on this one! Just finished the vid finally, and I hought it was excellent that at end of the video you didn't feel "GITS"ed out; something I was wondering once you got to the SAC stuff in the third part of the video. I know you have exhaustedly covered the series, but I'd be curious to hear how you like the new series. Either way, another banger video and stay chill.
Thank you for the awesome videos! I cannot wait to sit down with this Director's Cut lol.
awesome
amazing vid! dunchi's done it again!! i've had the manga collection on order at the bookshop since like march, it's still not here, i was hoping to read it before the science saru anime drops, alas! thanks for the timely recap before the new adaptation drops, good luck fighting the copyright strikes!!
I'm currently uploading the 4th revision. 4TH TIME'S THE CHARM, RIGHT??
Thanks for another great video! As always, your research, thoughtfulness, and authenticity shine through. You inspired me to watch the original movie for the first time in probably 25 years, and it was terrific. I also really enjoyed getting a glimpse of your less-Chill state, though I'm sorry you had to suffer through that dreadful PSP game for the sake of the video. Anyway, thanks again! This was super enjoyable
This was the perfect thing to watch during a 14-hour flight . Great job structuring the whole thing
I always saved the question of "what's your favorite mecha anime" for if ya ever did another AMA video again, and getting the answer here and it being Patlabor just galvanized my belief in you being one of my favorite video guys
Sweet! Been looking forward to this one. Watched the original again for the first time in a while ad very much excited for the new series
lego!
You know, I'm upset I never got into Ghost in the Shell. Now I wanna track down what I can and watch it. Obviously nothing after Arise (minus the new series)
Great video! I have been anxiously awaiting the new series and this satisfies that itch perfectly.
Another banger 🤩🤩
What say we starting beacuse of boobs ans stay for complexi or just boobs too
Fuck yea, I've been excited for this one. Is there an Appleseed video game? I need more Masamune Shirow deep dives (just kidding man, I know you have a list a mile long! Thanks for your constantly awesome work)
Holy hell, lets friggin gooo! As always, thank you for your hard work brother.
"I know there's some stuff I didn't talk about" Don't worry Chill, I get it. I would also lose my mind covering SAC 2045 =) No need to suffer for your art
Oh don’t worry, buddy. I talked about that. I talked about that…
